JUST ANOTHER SCREWJOB

So there I am, cheering my head off as Triple H delivered a patented Evil Overlord beatdown onto everyone's favorite redneck at the end of one of the best main events you'll see on free TV this year. A true Mark Out moment. Austin and Angle worked their butts off, Triple H had triumphantly returned, and all was right with the world.

And then my buddy Bart spoke up. You'd recognize Bart if you met him; we ALL know a Bart.

He smirked, "Yeah, just another screwjob. I knew we weren't getting a clean finish!"

And that's all he got out of the match. The best match Austin's wrestled since his return, Triple H back in top form, and all he had to say was "Just another screwjob."

I can handle Bart, because, well, he's an idiot. But a lot of wrestling fans who should honestly know better are saying the exact same things.

What my fellow Smarks seem to miss is this: DQ's and Run-ins occur so that wrestlers maintain their heat. For example, in case of the Austin/Angle/Triple H main event:

Austin fans got to say "Austin KICKED ANGLES BUTT, and would have won if that jerk H hadn't cheated. Besides, Hunter needed a lead pipe to win, even though Austin had just fought TWO other wrestlers!"

Angle fans got to say "Angle not only Suplexed the hell out of Austin, he retained his title!"

Triple H fans got to say "H is back, and he screwed Austin and left him bloody!"

Personally, I think it's genius on the part of the Fed. Everyone is happy. Everyone but people looking for a reason to complain.

The match in question was a great contest with tons of excitement, and all three men put their bodies at risk so that you and I can sit back, drink a beer, cheer our heroes and boo our villains. What part of that still leaves Smarks unsatisfied?

Let's examine the possible outcomes of a clean ending.
1: Angle pins Austin. Well, you've just MERCILESSLY SLAUGHTERED Austin's push, now haven't you? He has no feud, he lost to Angle, who has NOT been positioned as a badass monster, and he can't launch a campaign of vengeance without looking like an idiot, because hey, he lost, and he lost clean.

2: Austin pins Angle. Less traumatic, but still not good- You've given away a PPV main event for free, you've stopped Angle's amazing growth as a major league Heel, and you're left with nothing but Faces contending for the belt. Unless, of course, they pushed H as #1 contender, but Smarks with their "Triple H is in too many storylines" attitudes wouldn't be happy with that, either. =)

A suggestion for my fellow Smarks: for the next couple of weeks, count the clean pinfalls with no DQ's or Screwjobs during Raw and Smackdown. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say your final tally will be awfully close to "none". =) This is just how the business runs. Complaining about it is like saying, "I'd enjoy Opera if it wasn't for all the damn singing". =)

I'll admit that I enjoy Clean matches, which is why I like Heat. Hell, the APA pinned Kaientai cleanly three times in the same match last Sunday. Tazz beat Raven hands down. Heat is the show for people that don't like screwjobs, convoluted storylines or constant replays of "Moments Ago" action.

This is the genius of the WWF. There's always something for everyone, regardless of taste. Or in the case of Bart, the lack thereof. =)
