HHH

My God, how much harder is the WWF going to try and push HHH? I watched Smackdown last night and the whole thing finally crossed the line into totally asinine. I mean, really, 5 matches? How many of his lousy @#%$# entrances are we going to have to watch in EVERY show? And, by the way, wouldn't the attempt to push HHH as some kind of a bad-ass be more effective if he actually BEAT SOMEONE? Let's review the results of last night's "Gauntlet"...

    1. Loses cleanly to TBS in less than 2 minutes by the chokeslam
    2. Wins vs. Kane when Kane abandons the match and has someone outside the ring set the glove on fire
    3. Loses the handicap casket match to Mideon and Viscera cleanly
    4. Wins vs. Mankind when a shadowy figure interferes
    5. Wins vs. Rock when British Bulldog turns heel
By my count, that's 2 clean losses and 3 screwjob wins... hardly the way to push someone as a badass.

The whole 'gauntlet' thing would have been MUCH more convincing if he had faced 5 strong mid-carders and won them cleanly. If I had booked this thing, I would have announced a series of matches with HHH vs. Val Venis, Big Bossman, Road Dogg, Mideon and Viscera and had him win the first three. Then, I'd have him grab the microphone and ask Vince if that's the best he could do. Vince could then have sent out Mideon and Viscera to finish the job, and HHH could, with the help of Chyna perhaps, have sent them both packing. I'd then have a close-up of Vince doing one of his trademark 'gulps' as he watched HHH glare menacingly into the camera. The show could have then ended with a triumphant HHH appearing to be MUCH stronger as the PPV comes about. Your mid-carders' reputations wouldn't be hurt, especially if HHH wins on Sunday.

The WWF has done an admirable job of getting us to react strongly to their characters, whether that reaction is pro or con. Sometimes, the fans have chosen to react in the opposite way than the WWF wanted, and they made the wise decision not to try and force another way. Their best bet with HHH is to do a much better job of presenting him as a total tough guy and then let the fans choose whether to cheer or boo. As Vince has often said, the days of good vs. evil are over. He should continue to present characters who are clearly neither, and let the fans do the rest.
