IT AIN'T NEWS

Welcome loyal readers and fans, it is once again time to rant and rave and waste everyone's time discussing things that have most definitely been covered elsewhere already... I am the Hogan vs. Savage of wrestling columns! And speaking of not breaking any new ground...

To hell with everyone in charge of WCW. I have done as much as I can to stay away from your product for over a year now. But I am a die hard wrestling fan who can not resist. So I would still tune in, and then get increasingly angry as I watched total garbage. And then, last week, WCW gave us something back. I have gotten pissed off like never before at Tony Schiavonne talking out of his ass and refusing to acknowledge what was happening in front of him... and then last week, they put someone with more than a third grade education behind the microphone. By starting off the show with this, it was a sign that WCW was finally willing to change, and they followed up with a program full of changes in their product, most likely brought on by the abysmal Bash pay per view. So last week I sat down on my computer and went off about how great and refreshing it was for WCW to try something new for a change, and how it could lead them back to maybe not dominance, but at least a respectable program that fans could enjoy. But no, WCW, you must want us to hate you. You try to piss off and alienate all actual WRESTLING fans and replace us with, I assume, fans of rap music and basketball, who will DEFINITELY tune in just to see mega stars like Master P and Dennis Rodman, and who would not want their time wasted by that crappy wrestling garbage. Screw you all, WCW. I'm not watching anymore, and the more fans you piss off, the fewer people will watch, and fewer celebrities will bother to get involved with your sinking ship, and fewer talented athletes will sign with you because they won't want to be humiliated in front of the half empty arenas and the few households that happen to leave the TV tuned to your show on Monday nights. Keep jobbing Chris Benoit to David Flair; keep featuring concerts with KISS and Chad Brock instead of featuring Booker T and Eddy Guerrero. And keep watching Raw wipe their ass with you in the ratings... and soon enough, ECW might be doing the same. Screw you all.

Ah, deep breaths, deep breaths. I feel better.

Now to cover something I read FIRST right here on CRZ's SLASH WRESTLING... this rumor about Shane Douglas wanting a shoot match with Ric Flair. I don't know how believable this is, but Douglas HAS talked about this for years, and it IS hard to believe he'd suddenly put all his hard feelings towards Flair aside. I just wish that Douglas would direct his hostilities at Hogan (especially after Hogan blamed Douglas and company for lowering his quarter hour ratings last week) and realize that Hollywood is the man responsible for keeping more people down than anyone in the history of wrestling in the interest of himself and his friends, while Flair actually has jobbed to a lot of people over the years and elevated many to main event status (see: Sting, Luger, etc.). Not that Hogan would ever work a match with a "ratings killer" like Douglas, who would clearly bring down the great Hulkster just by being in the same ring as him, but I wish they would book this match. And that Shane would just beat the shit out of Hogan's brittle old body once the bell rang. Maybe WCW would fire him, and maybe he'd never get another contract in his life, but none of us would forget him if he made it happen. What a way to go out in a blaze of glory, huh?

And when you think about it, what other good reason (other than the almighty dollar) would Douglas have to sign with WCW, a company that has kept several of his friends from breaking through to superstardom for the past several years while instead promoting a rerun of the WWF?

As far as wrestlers who were NOT stupid enough to work for WCW, Chris Jericho has told us on his website that he will appear in the WWF in September, leading us to believe he might not be the "millennium" or the producer of GTV after all. Remember him switching his links from wcw.com to wwf.com and back again at the height of the "where will Jericho end up" saga? The guy loves to mess with us, he gets a kick out of it, and I am sure he wants to surprise us all when he does show up. With all the buzz around him, he will make a huge impact any time, but the longer we wait, or the less we expect him will only make it that much bigger. Regardless of what he is doing, we do know for sure (as JR confirmed on Raw this past Monday), that this Millennium thing will happen on August 9. As long as it doesn't turn out to be "The Power Greater than the Millennium," the returning Vince McMahon, it should be something to look forward to.

It really annoys me that the WWF (and WCW too, but we hate them already for enough reasons) constantly feels the need to swap their titles for added excitement. I understand the idea of having four title changes in a row to just make it seem like Austin was that much more of an underdog on Sunday, but it was not necessary. So now Jeff Jarrett holds a record with five Intercontinental titles to his credit, taking it away from Razor Ramon, but what does that really mean? Jarrett is calling himself the "Greatest Intercontinental champion of ALL time," that's right, A- Double L, T- I ... Anyway, that honor more so belongs to the Honky Tonk Man, who held onto the gold for 14 months, and kept us watching because we couldn't wait to see someone finally kick his ass and take the title. To me, that means a lot more than Jarrett holding the gold for two months, losing it and winning it back a day later for what will most likely be another short reign. Austin now has 4 WWF titles, but they have only been a few months at a time (at best). I would have liked to see Austin cast as the champion who always seems like he'll lose (such as at Fully Loaded, or any of the matches where a McMahon was the referee), but he always comes out on top in the end. Austin could have vanquished contenders right and left, to the dismay of Vince, who would keep bringing them out to challenge for the belt. Instead, we've seen one endless series with The Undertaker as the challenger, while other potential opponents for Austin have been kept out of the world title picture. I am happy to see Triple H in the main event at Summerslam, but he better not only be the successor to the Taker in the role of repeat challenger...or worse, they better not switch the title to Helmsley only to give it back to Austin again...why can't someone return some credibility to the title with a year long (or more) reign?

And why, if D-Lo is put into a program with Jarrett for the IC belt immediately after winning the European title, WHY did they even bother bringing back that stupid European title to begin with? Couldn't they at least give the Light Heavyweight title a legitimate attempt if they wanted to add another belt, or at least create something like a television title? Speaking of the Light Heavyweight title, with the whole Super Astros crew, which sometimes includes the amazingly talented Super Crazy of ECW fame, as well as the rumored signing of Devon Storm to a developmental deal, and so many good light heavyweights on the independent scene (especially Reckless Youth), they could really do something with this title. The idea of putting Storm in the Brood angle, possibly teaming him with Gangrel against Edge and Christian, they could make the Light Heavy belt the focus of an interesting storyline between Christian and Storm. Would you, the wrestling fan, want to see that? It seems to me that the only problem the division had the last time around was the lack of storylines or actual characters...Taka Michinoku was usually involved in storylines with wrestlers out of the division (like Bradshaw or Val Venis) while no one cared about contenders like Aguila or Pantera, who never had time to show their skills or get over with the crowd. With Terry Taylor rumored to be interested in putting this together, and willing to use his creative mind to do it, I think they stand a chance.

While on the subject of titles, I hate the Big Bossman, but the Hardcore title is the only title he can possibly hold legitimately. If he utilizes the gimmick where he just keeps pulling weapons out of his ring attire, it may work. He could be kind of a hardcore Inspector Gadget...but I think that the Road Dogg is the only guy who ever made that division matter.

Not that anyone will really listen to my ideas, but that's my take on the latest happenings in the sports entertainment world. I should be back next week with another column of opinions that don't mean a damn thing, but I promise, absolutely no news. And after going off on WCW this week, I shouldn't have to attack them like that again for a while. But you must admit, they asked for it. But again, that's the great thing about wrestling: you can just attack someone because you felt like it, you never have to bother with... "but they STARTED it..."
