JIM ROSS, JR. REPORT
January 26, 2001

(Note: This is my last column as I am now on an indefinite hiatus. Hopefully, you'll know why after reading this column.)

Good Ol' J.R., Jr. returns with a column that will turn heads and prove to even the harshest critics that this Okie is no shill for the World Wrestling Federation.

I thought the Royal Rumble exceeded my expectations and I would give the show a solid 9 out of 10. Everyone worked hard and for the most part the matches delivered. There's a reason why the show didn't get a perfect 10, but that will be explained later. I enjoyed the Rumble which I thought was entertaining and only dragged in a couple of spots. Stone Cold winning the Rumble has to be a surprise to some. Kurt Angle and Triple H's match seemed to be overshadowed by the outstanding ladder match between Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. Benoit and Jericho stole the show, but Angle and Triple H had a match that would be match of the night on many other shows.

While I enjoyed the Rumble, I didn't care much at all for TV this week. Storylines are treading water it seems and not much is being done to speed these stories up. Some talent may be overexposed. From where I sit, now is the time to take a couple of talents to the next level. Sadly, one of these talents is the current WWF Champion. The other could be a variety of people from Kane to Chris Jericho.

If the Hardy Boyz want to be players in the WWF, they need to become comfortable with the microphone, however, that would mean they would get mic time in order for that to be possible.

The pairing of Rikishi and Haku could lead to some interesting possibilities. Could more island boys be on their way to the WWF?

Eddie Guerrero is scheduled to return this Monday night for RAW in Pittsburgh. When he's healthy, Guerrero is one of the best hands in the business.

Many critics and "journalists" have taken shots at the Big Show this week because they believe he has returned in worse shape than the last time he was seen on WWF television. I've heard people crack jokes about him "retaining water," "carrying triplets," and "eating Mark Henry before leaving OVW." You hear people say the camera adds 10 lbs. and it has in the case of the Big Show. Personally, I believe that cool tiger tattoo may the real cause of all this talk and the weight gain is nothing more than an optical illusion. Truth is, Show's attitude is great and Federation officials can't be anymore happy with his progress.

I can't wait for the start of the XFL season next weekend. I would be anticipating the start even more had I snagged a position as play-by-play man.

Kane really went 55 minutes in the Royal Rumble. Don't have your intelligence insulted by buying into the "over and hour in the Rumble" line.

If Right To Censor disappeared from WWF television, would anybody care?

From where I sit, Lo Down is officially a failure. It's time to ditch the ridiculous getup and find something better. Just like Hardcore Holly's "forearm of steel" nobody cares about this dashing duo.

Kaientai drinking Steveweisers with Stone Cold on SmackDown! was definitely something that had me do a double take.

Raven is carving out a niche for himself as Hardcore Champion. The best is yet to come from this intelligent and talented individual. There is a backstory between Raven and his mystery person that goes back about ten years.

I had only one problem with the Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View this past weekend and that was the incident that ended the Chyna-Ivory match. The way it was handled was real slick as J.R. and The King went hush and became extremely somber. Jerry Lawler jumps out from his announce position so he could check on Chyna. It gave me flashbacks to the night of Owen Hart's death and it was designed to. That's disgusting if you ask me. Besides that, this angle has so many holes in it, it's silly. Chyna supposedly has 3 ruptured disks in her neck and is in a neckbrace from a Val Venis Old School Memphis piledriver. A mere two weeks later, she returns to get revenge on Ivory and looks to be in great condition. Fast forward to the Royal Rumble and the "injury" on her handspring elbow (which was botched, as usual) and the viewer is supposed to believe that she was given the go-ahead to compete despite suffering a "career ending injury." The question is, why should I have sympathy toward Chyna? She knew the consequences and she took a chance. To sum it up, the angle is lacking in logic and is tasteless to boot. And the purpose of this angle in the first place is so Chyna can sell enough books so she debuts #1 on the New York Times Best Seller's List. If the WWF is going to these lengths to put this book over, it doesn't deserve to be #1. Mick Foley's book sold the amount it did because it was a great book. The Rock's book debuted #1 because he is the most popular wrestler in the industry. I don't remember either one of them doing sympathy angles.

Sorry about the tangent, but that's my prerogative.
