BLAH

THE MAT POTATO

There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth recently about the future of Stone Cold Steve Austin. It seems to permeate throughout the net like a dead skunk in the middle of the road on a hot August day.

"What is the WWF going to do when SCSA isn't around any more?"

"The WWF is going to go to hell in a handbasket once SCSA is put on the shelf for good.".

As one of my compadres once said "Bovine Feces".

This is not a new occurrence. This is not something that isn't faced every day, in every part of the world. I saw it happen over and over again while I was active duty Navy. One of the people who had been there a long time would get his (or her) orders. Then the doom and gloomers would come out "what are we going to do once (fill in the blank) leaves?"

Well, I'll tell you what happened. Absolutely nothing! The world went on spinning, and even though things didn't go exactly the way they had before, but that was because that person's particular influence was no longer being felt. However, things did continue on. Sometimes they got better, sometimes they got worse, but overall the effort went forward.

The same thing is going to happen in the WWF. Sure, there will be those who tuned in just to see SCSA. There were people who used to watch just to watch Macho Man, or Hogan, or Andre the Giant.

OK, I know that the SCSA merchandise has set records that eclipsed those set by Hogan. Well, that means that the bar has been raised.

Several records have come tumbling down in all sports. Remember the "unbreakable" record for most home runs in a season? That was shattered last year, not by just one person, but by two!

Who's on the horizon? I have no idea. I doubt very seriously that there was anybody around who could have predicted the phenomenal rise of SCSA while he was doing his Ringmaster schtick. I can tell you that there will be somebody out there who is waiting to take up the gauntlet that has been hurled down. Somebody who is waiting to step up to the plate and take a good swing at it.

Yes, I am going to miss SCSA, even if he has turned into a shadow of his former self due to injury. Just as I will miss Foley when he finally hangs it up and settles down. (I do so hope that Foley will emulate Gorilla Monsoon and take up announcing. His mic work is phenomenal, plus he could take a bump if needed).

Transition, and change, are part of the package. We can hope for things to stay the same forever, however children grow up, parents age and eventually go on to their eternal reward, and we loose our hair (plus what remains turns white).

Or as Steve Miller wrote so many years ago "Nothing lasts".
