THE MAT POTATO II
French Fries

I was all set to go off on stereotypes, both in professional wrestling, and in the "real world", but I think I'll put that one on the back burner for another day or so. There is just way too much good stuff going on out there that is demanding the attention of the little voice, so I'll head where the voice takes me. (Gotta be careful. Joan of Arc listened to voices and look where it got her!)

First up is the possible sale of WCW. This is just too rich to pass up. This is being reported all over the place, but I'm not going to jump on that particular band wagon. Yes, it's a definite possibility what with Uncle Ted losing his iron grip on his "empire". Guess that merger with AOL doesn't look so hot now, eh?

So, ok. Let's just play this one out for a bit. What is the worst case scenario for WCW?

How's this for a wild scene?

Titan buys WCW.

Huh? What do you mean?

Well, let's just play with this wild eyed scenario for a bit.

VKM has succeeded in driving Uncle Ted totally out of the "wrasslin" business. But how was this possible? Hold on, it's going to get a bit bumpy here.

Russo is behind it all.

Yes, Russo. He was really a plant all along, VKM knew that the opportunity would arise where WCW would become available, especially after Russo did his best to drive the company into the toilet. Russo proves himself to be the evil genius he claims to be, and gets a big horse laugh on all of us netizens because it was a work from day 1!

OK, now Vince has control of the WCW. Now what? He's got a money drain, several over-the-hill stars, loads of underutilized talent, lots of mis-used talent, and some bums who have as much business in the ring as I do. What now?

Vince uses the WCW as a pure "wrestling" league. Time to make it a training league, with the accent on wrestling. Give the young and mis-used talent a chance to polish up their skills. Use the over-the-hill warhorses as teachers and job the hell out of them until they finally retire.

In essence WCW would become a AAA farm team to the WWF. Yeah, WCW goes on USA, or whatever station, but VKM is still the power behind the thrown. He could even have Skippy "in charge" of the WCW. Sort of grooming him for the big time.

What of Russo and Bischoff? They're both given their walking papers. Russo because how can VKM trust him? Give him the typical traitor send-off. Then he and Bischoff could open a video store someplace that specializes in drug humor, sexual innuendo, and Porky's movies.

Speaking of farm teams, I have been reading about the Backyard wrestling leagues recently. I am firmly against this idea as it fails on several levels.

The proponents say that it prepares them for the big time.

Hogwash! It no more prepares them for the bigs than blacktop basketball prepares you for the NBA. If you want to get proper preparation, then you go out for the team. You start young and learn the fundamentals first! Once you have the good foundation, and you have learned the proper way to fall, to counter moves, etc. Then, and only then, do you have any idea what you're in for at a reputable wrestling school.

Otherwise all you're doing is setting yourself up for serious injury. It's the same principle as trampolines in the back yard. Yeah, they're fun, but they're dangerous. I don't want to see anybody permanently paralized because they decided to do an elbowdrop from the top of the garage. (See next argument)

The proponents say "Hey, Mick Foley started this way. Look where he is today!"

OK, Mick did start out that way. Does that make it right? No. Mick dedicated himself to wrestling. He took a hard road to get to where he is today, and he'll be the first to admit that he isn't the most talented wrestler in the business. Aside from that, suppose that you survive the backyard league and decide to go pro. Now you have all sorts of bad habits to unlearn before you can even start building. (see reason 1)

One final thought before I close this out.

I read where scientists in Thailand have come up with a way to turn human feces into fuel.

Something useful out of something generally considered useless.

Guess there's still hope for Hogan, huh?
