THE MAT POTATO

So many topics, so little time. Doesn't it always seem to be that way? And the days just keep getting shorter and shorter. Or as Tennessee Ernie Ford put it so eloquently "another day older and deeper in debt".

Let's kick things off with a subject that seems to be burning up the net. Chyna as U.S. champ. I like it, however the method getting her there sucked. I mean, if she's supposed to be on an equal footing with the men, why book her into a "good housekeeping" match for the belt. That one sort of boggles.

Then again, what really boggles is that a guitar is considered a household appliance where a belt isn't. Gee, I seem to have a whole lot more belts than guitars around my house.

Anyway, I do hope that the WWF has the courage to let her actually wrestle. I honestly think she has the talent to work a straight match. She's not the first I've seen either. (Does anybody else remember Jacquelyn giving "Hard Work" a trip to the moat?)

Speaking of women (one of my favorite subjects, btw), the WWF is joking with its women's division, right? I mean, Moolah was old 20 years ago! She's been women's champ for as long as I can remember, and I remember waaaaaay back. She's a legend, but why this whole business with having her wear the title, and now to wrestle Mae (not so) Young? What is going on here? Is Vince trying to drive a stake through the heart of the women's title for good?

For all you Russo/Ferrerra marks out there - - get over yourselves! These guys are not the geniuses they are portrayed as! Hey, even Bischoff was able to get the N.W.O. angle going. (Then again, whose idea was it really? Hall/Nash? Or did Hogan "modify" the outsiders angle and horn in on it? And what about Vincent?)

Sorry, but I just do not see the alleged genius here. Then again, I don't think too highly of Goldberg (aka Hogan jr.). In fact, in 10 years or so, given the superman push he's riding, and if he continues on the Hogan trajectory, I fully expect to see Die-Goldberg-Die newsletters cropping up.

I guess that is going to go down as one of the many mysteries of life that I just cannot comprehend.

Just out of curiosity I decided to check out a "whatever happened to" query and found a page dedicated to wrestlers of yesteryear. One of the sections is (W)rest(le) in peace which lists wrestlers of yore, when they died, and how they died (if avail). Some of the names brought tears to my eyes as they were my heroes from childhood. Great names like Dick "The Bruiser", Ray Stevens, Bearcat Wright, etc. Some were names I had grown to love during the 80's (Big John Studd, Bruiser Brodey etc.) Most were just plain enigmas, however they may bring back fond memories for somebody. They also have a newsletter available. I haven't subscribed yet, but the newsletter appears to have quite a variety of wrestlers that they have tracked down. There is also a link to other sites/organizations (most notably the Cauliflower Alley club). If you're the least bit interested in what happened to one of your favorite wrestlers, I urge you to head over to http://www.teal.org/wht/. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
