THE MAT POTATO III
Return of the Bride of the Son of the Mat Potato

Many, many fun things still swirling around the world of professional wrestling. It's hard to keep on top of them all. Just about time you think you have heard it all, something else comes up and demands your attention.

Isn't it funny how our expectations raise and lower depending on the circumstances? I saw a show explaining it once that we build on our past experiences, and that becomes the norm. For example, my first computer had a clock speed of 8 mhz. Yes, 8 mhz. What a screamer, eh? Now there's talk of a chip with a clock speed of 1 ghz.

When I would boot up my first computer it took this side of forever, yet I still thought it was fast. Programs were very small then, and there was no such thing as expanded memory. That was to come much later in my computing life, and then the demands were generally in the 4 mhz memory required range.

Now, try to find a program that doesn't demand a pentium II (or better), with a 300 mhz clock speed and 32 megs of ram.

However, this is considered the norm, and anything that requires less is considered "primitive" in comparison, regardless of it's true quality.

I have been reading reports saying "Raw isn't as good as it's been the past few weeks", or "Nitro didn't suck nearly as bad as it has been".

Have we come to the point where we expect RAW to knock us out of our seats every week? Where nothing short of 5 star matches are acceptable?

Have we gotten to the point that Nitro will need to put on a celebrity death match (live, not the claymation version given us by MTV) with Hogan and Flair literally fighting to the death before us to even get grudging acceptance?

Yes, RAW has been a bit more subdued than in recent weeks. It's a long haul before the 12 hour wrestle-glut that is the Wrestlemania experience. Much like the marathon runner, RAW has to pace itself, yet keep interest flowing toward the extravaganza. RAW just came off one of the best PPV's they have given. Actually, the consensus appears to be that it's coming off 2 of the best PPV's they have given in quite some time.

Time to let the stew simmer a bit and then start building up for Wrestlemania. Much like that stew, it takes time, and can't be rushed.

Nitro appears to be heading in the right direction. Yes, even with such stunts as putting Tank Abbot in the ring against Sid. However they did this on Nitro and may be their way of phasing Abbot out. They have just killed his credibility, and this could be his "reward" for pulling the knife at the PPV.

Then again, it could be more of the insane booking. Only time will tell on that score.

Does anybody remember when the WWF was being written off? Everybody had Vince standing in the unemployment line, selling pencils on the street corner, or selling his body on the corner for coffee money. However a funny thing happened. He managed to make do with what he had, and got the company back on top.

Can the same thing happen to the WCW? Yes. Will it? Not without a lot of hard work. The wrestlers have to be able to put the good of the company ahead of their own private agendas. It also requires a little more attention to what the crowd wants, and not who is friends with the bookers.

Vince tried to shove Rocky Maivia down the publics throat before they were ready to accept him. However, after a heel turn, and a little polish, he has turned out to be one of the hottest properties around.

Who does the WCW have that can fill this role? I don't know. I do know that nobody will ever get over by being a blatant rip off. Let Juvy be Juvy, not "The Juice". Find what works and go with it. That's about the only advice I can give.

Remember, the advice is always free, and worth what you pay for it.
