BLAH

THE MAT POTATO

I have come to that terrible point in a columnists existence. You who write these things (and probably even those who read these same things) probably know whereof I speak. The point where you have 4 or 5 ideas running around in your head, all of them worthy of mention, none of them worthy of building a column around. Thus comes forth the rambling, "random thoughts". (Hey, did I break Kayfabe there and divulge a secret? Sorry. Just think of me as the masked columnist.)

The first thing on the plate is, "when did we become so jaded that nothing is taken at face value any more?"

I read an article that began with something to the effect of "if the Eric Bischoff situation turns out not to be a work...".

What?

Let's see, it was reported in the "mainstream press" as I recall. Now, I know that the feds like to throw a swerve, but with their tenuous, at best, relationship with the press, I can't imagine them doing something like this, even for publicity. There is a thing called journalistic ethics; and even if they aren't followed too closely at times, I can't imagine that they would allow themselves to be played this way.

What next? "What if the Owen Hart situation is a work? Or the last presidential election?

Come on! Get real! There are some things that happen in this world that are real. We have to get beyond our "smart" attitude and allow ourselves to believe. So, we get fooled every now and then? Well, it happens to all of us. There isn't any shame in that, it's part of the human condition.

Quick sodden thought. I was out cruising the net the other day and ran across a banner for WWF Unforgiven. They outline the 7 deadly sins, and the sin du jour was "Sloth", so who's picture do they associate with this? THE BIG SLOW! Too funny. (At least KelMar thinks so. Thanks for the kind words.)

I saw an ad for the "Legends of wrestling" ppv special. Pardon me, but some of these names weren't "legendary" when they were active, and now they're trying to catch lightning in a bottle? If I want to watch over the hill wrestlers trying to live on their '80's I'll watch WCW.

I don't know who's brilliant idea this was, but watching wrestlers past their prime is not the same as watching actors who have aged on. It's sort of like watching an old-timers baseball game. I have very fond memories of these wrestlers, and I would like to keep these memories in tact. I don't need to have my last images of them being bad spots, and what have you. They've had their time in the sun. Time to move on.

Besides, the whole "legends of wrestling" is a bit of a misnomer. Granted, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka was performing well the last time I saw him (and he had to be 50 then), the thought of legends to me would be Gorilla Monsoon, Bruno Sammartino and Pedro Morales. To somebody else it would be Verne Gagne, Strangler Lewis, Gorgeous George or Ernie Ladd.

It's time to let things go. As I have been reminded way too many times, we can't dwell on the past. I'm going to tell these wrestlers the same thing I keep screaming about Hogan, Savage and all the rest. It's time to move on, let the younger wrestlers have their time in the sun, make their marks,.

And then move along.
