BLAH

THE MAT POTATO

So, the holidays are over, or effectively over. Only a few more days of the hysteria that is the y2k hype and we'll be free to move on to our next crisis.

I took a week's vacation away from work (all of it!), so I'm playing catch-up now. Of course, that includes the obligatory visit to CRZ's site and catching up on my favorite columnists. Of course, Marvelous Martin is on the short list, and he inspired this column. Actually, it was a couple if items in his column that brought this about, the catalyst being his mention of Peacock's attempt to get Kurt Angle's finisher named. (A brilliant name, btw. Very catchy and appropriate).

Some finishers just don't seem to travel well when a wrestler changes feds/gimmicks. I mean, look at it. When Scott Hall was Razor Ramon, the "Razor's Edge" was a catchy name for the finisher. So he moves over to WCW and it's now called "The Outsider's Edge"? Huh? What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Another name that didn't travel well is Hog Wild (which got changed to Road Wild?) after the Harley folks complained. Road Wild? What?? Come on, at least Hog Wild is a phrase that is recognizable. Road Wild is just plain stupid.

OK, so the Liontamer became the Walls of Jericho. Yeah, right. The Rings of Saturn? Come on, are we reaching far enough in our "cutesy" department? Why does a Boston Crab have to be anything other than what it is?

What's next? Will the Mandible Claw be renamed "Mankind's Inhumanity to Man"? Or will Dean Malenko's Texas Cloverleaf become "The Iceman Cometh"?

Where does it end?

I'm not asking for much, just a little creativity and thought behind what is going on. Before you spring it on the folks, say it out loud several times and see how it sounds. And if it sounds stupid, then don't do it!

See, how hard was that?
