BLAH

THE MAT POTATO

Well, well, well. It is truly amazing what happens in this crazy world of ours, eh? Reborn 60's radicals come out of the woodwork in Seattle to demonstrate and create some good old fashioned rioting. (of course most of these kids weren't even gleams in their parents eyes during the 60's).

Coke decides to pull advertising from the WWF because of questionable content. Of course, the whole internet community is up in arms. "Hey, the WWF's only responsibility is to put on a product, and you can decide to watch or not.", etc. Hmm, well, here's another take on it.

It's Coca Cola's money, they have responsibilities also! There's this thing called "shareholders" and they get real nervous when the market share slips. So, Coca Cola is responding to a group of concerned citizens. Are these citizens wrong? I don't think so. I also find what is passing for wrestling today to be totally abhorrent, and as such, I no longer go out of my way to watch.

I'll be right up front about it. I depend on people like CRZ to report what is going on during the shows. One of these days I'm going to read something that makes me want to go back to watching on a semi-regular basis. Hey, I was a total wrestling fanatic for a period of 3 years. WWF, WCW, ECW (when I could get it). I watched one, taped the other on Monday nights, and searched all over for the third.

So, what happened?

I could take the simple way out and blame Russo/Ferrera, but I won't. What happened is that wrestling evolved from being sports entertainment, to pure entertainment. Of course, that meant that certain taboos were broken. Certain lines were crossed. Certain toes were stepped on.

Among the lines that were crossed were some that are sacrosanct with me. I found that overall, the product was more repellant than attractive. I could no longer sit through the garbage waiting for something that attracted me.

And from the looks of the write-ups, not a whole lot has changed. If I want to see a soap opera, I will sit down with my wife and watch her show. Or any of the prime-time soaps that pass for evening entertainment. However, I enjoy watching two (or more) grown men go after each other. I do not want to see women abused, nor do I want to see rape, assault, grand theft auto, nor any of the other lines that are being crossed in the name of "pushing the envelope".

Evidently I'm on the losing end of this current spate of Darwinism. I don't like where wrestling is heading, and as such, my choices are getting a bit limited.

And it's a sad time to have your choices limited this way.
