THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 12.03.99 to 12.07.99

"This Week in '90s Wrestling History" was a popular -- probably THE ONLY popular feature -- of my People's Column. The People's Column was turning into too much of everything. So what do I do? I take this out and expand it into it's own little column. Just a warning, this probably isn't all wrestling history... just '70 and on since I probably won't recognize many names before that. But we'll try the earlier years anyway, won't we? I did go from most recent to oldest just to be different in case you nod off.

12.03 - It's Riki Choshu's birthday. Sushi for all. It's also Stan Lee's birthday... wasn't he a WWF Hotline guy? And whatever happened to that Charlie Minn guy?

12.05 - Exotic Adrian Street celebrates a birthday today... that oughta be fun. Play a game of golf for Larry Zbyszko today too, he's turning the big 4-6 (A.C. Jazz would never go for someone that old).

12.07 - It's my birthday! Woohoo! #19! Plus, Tammy Sytch celebrates her birthday. So does Wolfie D (does he still do that Nation rap all the time?). So does Curtis Hughes (Go, Jericho, Go).

12.06.98 - The WWF holds its "Capital Carnage" card in the UK. Jim Ross suffers a bout of Bell's Palsy and was forced off the air for a while. Thankfully he's back. The main event of this card was a four-way match with Austin, Undertaker, Kane, and Mankind. Also on the card... WWF Champion The Rock against X-Pac, Christian & Sable against Marc Mero & Jacquelyn (you've heard what happened here by now... it's kinda like "Terri Runnels' Nipple"), and Tiger Ali Singh against Edge (you think you know him).

12.07.97 - I turned 17 and the WWF held it's "In Your House: DeGeneration X" event. The main event was WWF champ Shawn Michaels defending the belt against Ken Shamrock; Owen Hart did a run-in to mark his first appearance since Bret's screwing). Also on the card, Taka Michinoku beat Grandmaster Sexy in the tournament final for the WWF lightheavyweight belt (Gill-berg... Gill-berg...), Los Boriquas defeated DOA, and Butterbean won a tough man match by DQ against Marc Mero.

12.04.96 - Legendary midget wrestler Little Beaver passed away at the age of 61 following a battle with emphysema.

12.04.95 - Manami Toyota brings the WWWA World belt back to All-Japan womens' by defeating JWP's Dynamite Kansai in Tokyo. Right.

12.03.94 - "Macho Man" Randy Savage makes his WCW debut on a live "Saturday Night." Reread that... a live "Saturday Night." A debut on "Saturday Night." And I'm not talking about the Gambler debuting on "Saturday Night" either.

12.05.93 - UWFI champ Nobuhiko Takada forces WCW World champ Vader to submit in a non-title match in Japan. This brings in a crowd of 46,168.

12.06.91 - Dynamite Kid announces his retirement from the ring.

12.03.91 - The WWF held it's first ever December pay-per-view, "Tuesday in Texas." Undertaker lost his recently-won WWF title back to Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage returned to active competition in a win against Jake Roberts, and Ted DiBiase & Repo Man defeated Virgil & El Matador.

12.07.89 - William D. Calhoun, better known as Haystacks, passed away at age 55 following a battle with diabetes. Haystacks weighed in at 601 pounds.

12.06.79 - Bob Backlund defeated Antonio Inoki in Japan to regain the WWF World title, which Inoki won on November 30th. The WWF has yet to recognize either title change... if you don't see it on TV, it didn't really happen.

That's your history lesson for this week. Coming up next week (12.08 to 12.14)... Ric Flair has a heart attack, fans get rowdy, the WWF hits Rock Bottom, and so much more! See you then! Drop by the People's Column and feel free to ship me an e-mail! You could be in "I Get Letters Too" in that OTHER column!
