THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 7.26.00 TO 8.01.00

R.I.P. Georgia Senator Paul Coverdale

Hey everybody! There wasn't a "History" column last week, but I actually have a good excuse this time! I was BUSY trying to pre-register for the upcoming fall semester, buying textbooks ($306... if you haven't had the experience first-hand, college is EXPENSIVE), buying a new parking sticker... lots of fun educational stuff. But I'm back this week! I'm hoping to do a People's Column just for the heck of it later in the week, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

7.26:

1998 - The WWF gave us "Fully Loaded" live and in living color from Fresno, CA. Our main event... four main-eventers in a match for the tag team titles. Yep, Kane and Mankind defended their World tag team titles unsuccessfully against Steve Austin and The Undertaker. I think the WWF wasn't exactly strong in the tag division back then, compared to nowadays. We also had a match that we're STILL HAVING TODAY, as I-C champ The Rock and HHH went to a 30-minute time limit draw in a best-of-three-falls match. Also on the card: Val Venis d. Jeff Jarrett ... European champ D'Lo Brown d. X-Pac ... 2 Cold Scorpio & Faarooq d. Terry Funk & Bradshaw ("When Acolytes Collide!") ... Mark Henry d. Vader ... The Disciples of Apocalypse d. LOD 2000 ... Owen Hart d. Ken Shamrock in a match in Stu Hart's dungeon with guest referee Dan Severn.

1986 - Dusty Rhodes won the NWA World belt from "Nature Boy" Ric Flair (he hasn't been mentioned in a while... WCW is trying to make us forget him, aren't they?) in Greensboro, NC.

Birthdays - Tommy Rich is 44.

7.27:

1999 - You better recognize! D'Lo Brown won his first WWF I-C title (and only at this point, but still... first) as he defeated Jeff Jarrett in Dayton, Ohio in what must've been a "Raw" or "Heat" taping.

1996 - Harlem Heat won their sixth set of WCW World tag titles when they beat The Steiners in Dayton, Ohio. Hmmm... two Dayton titles changes in two federations on one date.

1990 - Stan Hansen won a tournament final against Mitsuharu Misawa to win the vacant All-Japan Triple Crown.

1963 - Fritz Von Erich won his first AWA World title by defeating "Ya know what I mean" Verne Gagne (yes, it WAS a lame joke) in Omaha, NE.

Birthdays - Manny Fernandez is 46 today. Also, Triple H is having a party today, but I don't know what year he was born so I really can't give you an age. While we're at it, it's Shannon Moore's birthday. He's at that magical age of 21. 3 COUNT PARTY TONIGHT!

7.28:

1995 - In what was probably an awesome match, Eddy Guerrero won the ECW TV belt from Dean Malenko in Middletown, NY.

7.29:

1991 - My favorite part of this column... the USWA heavyweight title! Awesome Kong won it from Jerry Lawler today, and I bet you can guess what city he won it in.

1988 - Stan Hansen & Terry Gordy won the All-Japan International tag belts from Jumbo Tsuruta & Yoshiaki Yatsu. I'm as thrilled as you are.

Birthdays - "Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner is 38. And his muscles are FREAKY.

7.30:

1999 - "Curtis Comes Home", a benefit show in Rostraver, PA, is held in honor of Mark Curtis (Brian Hildebrand), who was fighting stomach cancer. Al Snow and D'Lo Brown were having a match with guest referee Mankind. Well, Mankind treied to get control by putting ye ol' mandible claw on both men. Hildebrand ran in and made a three count, naming Mankind winner. The real winner... the Hildebrand family.

1935 - Back in the day, Danny O'Mahony won his third NWA World title by defeating El "Strangler" Lewis in Boston, MA.

7.31:

1988 - You know everything I said a few days ago on July 29th? Reverse those names and pretend like it's here.

Birthdays - To quote CRZ... 1, 2, JOHNNY ACE! It's Johnny's birthday. Let's see... he'll be 35.

8.01:

Birthdays - Remember Bunkhouse Buck? I have a feeling most of you said "no." Anyway, he's 50 today.

And that's really it... a SLOW week. Next week will more than make up for it though!

Next week (8.02 to 8.08): One "Collision in Korea", one "SummerSlam", one "Heatwave", one "Road Wild", one "Superdome Spectacular", one "Last Tangle in Tampa", one "Clash of the Champions", and much more! See you then!
