THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING - 5.24.00 to 5.30.00

Yep, a day late. Oh well.

Can I vent on Mark Madden's little "no run-ins" speech, too? DOES HE EVEN PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT HE IS BROADCASTING? I think that EVERY match in WCW ends with a run-in! Then you look at Raw - the program Madden is bashing - and how many run-ins were there? Hardcore Holly and that's about all I can think of. Get a life, Madden. You and WCW are in no place to be bashing the WWF... when you are withing a point of the WWF in the ratings, then you can start bashing. You're in a DEEP hole... instead of throwing dirt on top of you, try digging out of it.

And why are you guys ruining Norman Smiley, who - as crazy as it is - was one of the most over guys in WCW? Ralphus worked with Jericho. Ralphus is not working with Norman. Just please tell me that Booker (T) won't be joining them on Thunder... PLEASE... and please get Norman back into something cool and the heck away from Ralphus.

Could I ask why we must sit through commercials about genital herpes? I know some people have the problem, but COME ON... do I really NEED to see this commercial? Thanks, Valtrex, for ruining my night.

BRAVES UPDATE: The Braves are 31-14, lead the NL East by 4 1/2 games over the Expos (and 6 1/2 over the Mets), and have the best record in baseball. Not too shabby, I guess.

For the second week in a row, there is not a single USWA heavyweight title change. They spoiled us... and now we suffer.

5.24:

1999 - The World Wrestling Federation paid tribute to Owen Hart, who had died the night before, by dedicating the entire "Raw is War" broadcast to him. Nitro also had a message about Owen at the beginning of the show.

1996 - Akira Taue won the All-Japan Triple Crown from Mitsuharu Misawa in Sapporo, Japan.

1984 - In Japan, Ric Flair regained the NWA World title from Kerry Von Erich.

1973 - Harley Race won the NWA World belt from Dory Funk, Jr.

5.25:

1999 - At the Raw tapings to be aired the following Monday, Jeff Jarrett won the WWF I-C belt from the Godfather in Moline, IL. On that same show the Acolytes won the World tag belts from Kane & X-Pac.

1997 - Live on "Raw is War", the makeshift tag team of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels won the World tag belts from Owen Hart & The British Bulldog in Evansville, IN.

1989 - The man they call Vader lost the IWGP heavyweight belt to Salmon Hasimikov in Osaka, Japan. On that same card, Jushin "Thunder" Liger (who WCW named a show after) won the IWGP junior heavyweight belt from Hiroshi Hase.

1987 - Soldat Ustinov & Boris Zuhkov (say that five times fast) won the AWA World tag belts from the Midnight Rockers.

5.26:

1996 - "WWF In Your House: Beware of Dog" was broadcast live on PPV from Florence, SC. Unfortunately for the WWF, Florence was rocked by horrible weather that messed up the satellite transmission, with only the first and last matches being aired live on PPV along with the "Free For All." A few days later, the WWF offered a free pay-per-view to those who ordered with live rematches of those matches not aired along with the previous editions of the two aired matches. In the matches aired, The Smokin' Gunns won the World tag titles from the Godwinns during the "Free For All", Marc Mero pinned Hunter Hearst-Helmsley, and World champ Shawn Michaels and the British Bulldog went to a draw. I remember ordering this PPV and already being pretty mad when we couldn't see most of it, and then they go and do the stupid double-pin thing. Anyway, in the matches not broadcast: Bob Holly d. Dr. Isaac Yankem, D.D.S. ... Jake Roberts d. Justin Hawk Bradshaw ... Savio Vega d. Steve Austin in a Caribbean strap match ... Ahmed Johnson d. Jerry Lawler ... Ulllllltimate Warrior d. Owen Hart ... I-C champ Goldust d. The Undertaker in a casket match.

1987 - The team of The Rock 'n Roll Express won the NWA World tag belts from Manny Fernandez and the late Rick Rude. Meanwhile, Hacksaw Jim Duggan and The Iron Sheik were arrested by New Jersey state police. Hacksaw was charged with possession of marijuana and drinking while driving, while Sheik was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana.

5.27:

1997 - Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace won the All-Japan International tag belts from Toshiaka Kawada & Akira Taue.

1996 - "Monday Nitro" eloped into a two-hour show. During the show, Scott Hall came out of the audience and declared war on WCW.

1988 - The late Owen Hart won the IWGP junior heavyweight title from Hiroshi Hase in Sendai, Japan.

1984 - Vince McMahon, Sr., dies.

1959 - Eddie & Dr. Jerry Graham won the WWWF U.S. tag titles from Mark Lewin & Don Curtis in Bridgeport, CT.

5.28:

1996 - Due to a stipulation in the Steve Austin-Savio Vega "Beware of Dog" rebroadcast, Ted DiBiase had to leave the WWF.

1983 - Canadian wrestler John Rougeau died of cancer.

1966 - Crusher & Dick the Bruiser won the AWA World tag belts from Larry "The Ax" "Curt's Dad" Hennig & Harley Race.

Birthdays - It's Headbanger Mosh's birthday. You know, the guy who had that cool "Beaver Cleavage" gimmick that Russo thought would work. It didn't, but that doesn't mean he won't try it again with Hugh Morrus! It's also Curt Hennig's birthday. Can we possibly get the real Perfect One back to the WWF ASAP?

5.29:

1995 - Sapparo, Japan, saw Mitsuharu Misawa win the All-Japan Triple Crown from Stan Hansen.

Birthdays - Steve Corino's birthday is today... the excitement just jumps out of me when I type that. It's also Pete Gas's birthday! HURRAY! THE MEAN STREET POSSE RULES!

5.30:

1997 - Stevie Richards suffered a broken vertebra during a match with Raven against the Eliminators. Following this, Dancin' Stevie would jump to WCW for an unsuccessful stint.

1973 - Over yonder in Hamburg, PA, "Shirtless" Tony Garea & Haystacks Calhoun won the WWWF World tag titles from Profressor Tanaka and my favorite manager of all time Mr. Fuji.

1925 - WAY back when, Joe Stecher won the NWA World belt from Stanislaus Zbyszko.

Birthdays - It's Mr. Ooh La La's birthday... I say that because he has a weird name. It's also Jake "The Snake" Roberts' birthday... I hate to think of how he is going to celebrate. Jake, beat those demons!

Sorry if this seemed a little dull... the history books gave me absolutely nothing to work with!

NEXT WEEK (5.31 to 6.06): We've got one Over the Edge and a bunch of other stuff! I'll catch you on the flipside.
