THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING - 4.05.00 to 4.11.00

It's Wednesday and I have my column in on the right day for once! I am under the influence of Celestial Seasonings "Sunshine Citrus" herbal throat drops this week, if that means anything. Yes, I get sick the week after spring break!

BRAVES UPDATE (through the game of Tuesday, 4.04): Hey, we're 1-1! The Braves didn't look that great tonight, but between the Big Cat being back in his awesome form and Mad Dog pitching like his usual self yesterday, it's not all bad. We might or might not still be in first place of the NL East, depending on how other teams do tonight. Coming up this week, we've got the rubber game against Colorado on Wednesday, an off day on Thursday, three games in Atlanta against the Giants for the weekend, the first away game of the season against the Cubs in cold Wrigley on Monday (on Turner South... which for some reason my part of Georgia - in the South - doesn't get), and another off day on Tuesday.

It sounds like WrestleMania 2K was a pretty good pay-per-view after the first few matches. Pete Rose did his thing which was good but probably won't help a guy who deserves to be in the baseball Hall of Fame get in it. I really enjoyed Raw this week; with the exception of the Bull Buchanan match of the night it was entertaining. I was surprised to see our paragon of virtue lose the European belt so quickly, but Chyna and the Latino heat together should be entertaining. Meanwhile on TNT, I thought the first hour of the "Best of Nitro" was actually pretty good. I enjoyed seeing some of the older stuff (well, not the ten minute Hogan lovefest). It was fun watching the "throw Ron Misterio, Jr. like a dart" footage for the first time in a while. I know I've been critical towards WCW in my columns here on the [slash], but I'm willing to give them another chance at entertaining me (well, except during the second hour on Mondays... I have other stuff to watch then) under a few conditions:

1) Eric Bischoff doesn't turn it into "WCW Monday Bischoff" again. No lame interview segment, no coming out and playing the good guy when someone is smoking in the ring, no constant knocks against the other show (I don't think he can afford it, actually), and so on.

2) Vince Russo writes good storylines. Some of his in his first short WCW stint were good, but Bertha Faye against Roddy Piper mud wrestling is NOT the kind of mud wrestling that us hormone-filled college guys want to see.

3) Mark Madden is banned from saying that stupid "spinarooni." He should also be banned from wearing Hawaiian shirts like he did on the spring break Nitro... that was not pretty.

That's all for now. Onto the History!

4.05:

1992 - WrestleMania VIII was live from Indianapolis' Hoosier Dome. There was a double main event, with Ric Flair losing the WWF Title to Randy Savage. Remember when Ric had those pictures of him with Liz (so why is she on his side now... HUH?)? The other half was Ego Hogan beating Sid Justin by DQ when Papa Shango of all people interfered (yes, The Godfather found his way into the main event of WM). Of course, this prompted the return of the Ullllllllllltimate Warrior, who stayed around for a good half year before jetting right before the Survivor Series, where he was scheduled for the main event but disappeared instead. Hey, it revived Curt Hennig's wrestling career so we can't feel bad about it. Bret Hart regained the I-C belt from Roddy Piper in a bloody, good match. Also on the card: Shawn Michaels d. Tito Santana ... Tatanka d. Rick Martel ... The Natural Disasters d. World tag champs Money Inc. by countout ... Virgil, Big Boss Man, Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter d. Repo Man, The Mountie & The Nasty Boys ... Undertaker d. Jake Roberts ... Owen Hart d. Skinner.

Birthdays - The king of the word "scum", DDP, was born today back in some unknown year. He is kinda old looking and I still wonder how he got a babe like Kimberly (and what was with her voice at the spring break Nitro?).

4.06:

1997 - Hey kids, it's WCW's Spring Stampede! Hurray! The main event was DDP beating Randy Savage in what was a pretty entertaining feud. Lex Luger won a shot at the World title by beating Booker T, Stevie Ray, and The Giant in a four-way match. Also on the card... Ron Misterio, Jr. d. Ultimo Dragon ... U.S. champ Dean Malenko d. fellow Radical Chris Benoit by DQ ... TV champ The Artist Currently Known as Price Iaukea d. Lord Steven Regal ... Women's champ Akira Hokuto d. Madusa ... Public Enemy (Big Boys Shopping Network joke here) d. Jeff Jarrett & Mongo McMichael ... Kevin Nash and Rick Steiner went to a no-contest. I wish we knew what was going to be on this year's Spring Stampede! Do we still get that fantastic Jimmy Hart vs Mancow match?

1984 - Wrestlers are so funny... Ken Patera and Mr. Saito threw a 30-pound boulder through the window of a Waukesha, WI, McDonald's when they were refused service after hours. Hey, they are celebrities... McDonald's should have rolled out the red carpet just for them (that's sarcasm, by the way). Shortly after, a brawl with Waukesha police occured at the Holiday Inn where Patera and Saito were staying.

4.07:

1997 - In Huntsville, Alabama, Ultimo Dragon won the WCW TV belt from The Artist Currently Known as Prince Iaukea.

1986 - Yes, it's another WrestleMania, and this time it's WM II from not one, not two, but three different arenas. I guess we'll go arena by arena here, starting out with Uniondale's Nassau Coliseum. The big match there was Mr. T beating Roddy Piper by DQ in a boxing match. In the three other matches in New York: Paul Orndorff and Don Muraco went to a double-countout ... Randy Savage d. George Steele ... Jake Roberts d. George Welles. Meanwhile in Chicago's Rosemont Horizon, the big match was probably the 20-man battle royal involving WWF stars and NFL stars (William Perry, Bill Fralic, Russ Francis, Jim Covert, Harvey Martin, Ernie Holmmes) won by Andre the Giant. The tag belts changed hands as The British Bulldogs defeated Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake. Also in Chicago: Women's champ Fabulous Moolah (ugh) d. Velvet McIntyre ... Cpl. Kirschner d. Nikolai Volkoff. Then we go to the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, with the big Hogan-Bundy cage match, won (surprise!) by Hogan. Also in Chi-Town: Rick Steamboat d. Hercules Hernandez ... Adrian Adonis d. Uncle Elmer ... Dory Funk, Jr. & Terry Funk d. JYD & Tito Santana.

4.08:

1995 - In Philly, Public Enemy d. Radicals Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko to win the ECW tag belts. On that same card, the ECW TV belt changed hands as Radical Eddy Guerrero defeated 2 Cold Scorpio (remember that music video he had when he first entered WCW?).

1990 - The AWA World title changed hands for the last time as Larry Zbyszko won it from Mr. Saito.

4.09:

1999 - Japanese woman wrestler Emiko Kado, 23, died from head injuries suffered in a tag match on March 31, as she never regained consciousness after being suplexed on her head by Mariko Yoshida.

1917 - OK, this is kinda funny... Earl Caddock won the NWA World belt wheen Joe Stecher refused to return to the ring.

4.10:

1999 - The Tokyo Dome served as the home of an electrified explosive barbed-wire match between Masa Chono and Atsushi Onita. Let's see... Chono entered in a U.S. Army tank. Both wrestlers and Mr. Unno (the referee) ended up tangled up in the exploding ropes and were knocked unconscious. I have a question... WHAT ARE THESE GUYS THINKING?

1987 - This actually fits for today and tomorrow... the Jim Crockett, Sr., Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament was held in Baltimore. There were a whole lot of teams in it, so we'll skip to the finals, as Dusty Rhodes & Nikita Koloff beat Tully Blanchard & Lex Luger. In two matches not in the tournament, NWA World champ Ric Flair pinned Barry Windham and Ole Anderson won a cage match against Big Bubba Rogers.

4.11:

1999 - OH BOY, it's WCW/nWo Spring Stampede '99! We had a double main event of sorts, with DDP winning his first of his two-time, two-time, two-time (I hate that... he says it three times and he won it twice) World titles in a four-way match against Ric Flair, Sting, and Ego Hogan with guest referee Randy Savage. Greenberg also pinned Kevin Nash in one of their ongoing matches. One title change, as Scott Steiner won the U.S. belt by beating Booker T in the tournament finals. Also on the card... Air Quasimoto d. Blitzkrieg ... Bam Bam Bigelow d. Hak ... Scotty Riggs d. Mikey Whipwreck ... Konnan d. Disco Inferno (I loved Disco's music video of Konnan's rap wannabe-stuff) ... Cruiserweight champ Ron Misterio, Jr. d. Kidman ... Radicals Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko d. Raven & Radical Perry Saturn.

1997 - Vader was detained by authorities in Kuwait after he (ahem) attacked "Good Morning Kuwait" host BassamAl Otham, who asked if wrestling was fake. Is that lawsuit still pending?

Birthdays - Balls Mahoney (or, as PWI calls him, just Mahoney... 'cause PWI can't use "Balls") was born today in 1972.

NEXT WEEK (4.12 to 4.18): One Spring Stampede, one Barely Legal, and some more exciting stuff. See you then!
