THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING - 3.29.00 to 4.04.00

I'm back from vacation as of right now... and yes, I did totally forget to send this in on Monday before I left like I said I would. But hey... you STILL get those two days I missed out on! Woohoo!

So how was vacation? Pretty good. I thought Brunswick was covered with construction, but Orlando beats it all. You would think they would at least try to have ONE ROAD in Orlando that's not all torn up, seeing how they have Disney and all. The Braves lost to the Dodgers and the folks at Disney's Wide World of Sports made me never, eeeeever want to hear Homer's "Woohoo" again because they played it as a sound effect about 9,000 times. On the other hand, they played the "WHAZZUP!" sound effect three times and everyone wanted it about 9,000 more. Oh well... it was Disney, so I guess they couldn't do a beer slogan too much. I also got a nasty sunburn, so yes... I'm from Georgia and I now have a redneck. Let's see what else I remember... I got this cool Marvin the Martian mousepad (for those of you who missed it, I'm a big Marvin fan and a fool that buys anything that has his face on it... I know, get a life)... and I think that's it.

I went wrestling crazy at Wal-Mart (Supercenter, thank you) this past Saturday. I finally got a copy of the 2000 PWI Almanac, which is cool as always because, if nothing else, it gives me the info for this column. Yes, you get updated info! Yippee! After breaking through all of the N'SYNC fans, I also broke down and bought a copy of "WWF Aggression." My review is as follows... the DX song rocks. Method Man's Rock is cool. The rest aren't all that impressive. Maybe I'm just not that much of a rap fan outside of the occasional Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Jay-Z. Who knows. If you're a rap fan and a wrestling fan, go for it. Otherwise, pick up Weird Al's "Running with Scissors." While I'm on the subject of album reviewing, let's do another. I'll probably take a beating for this one... I really like the Dixie Chicks' "Fly" CD. I don't listen to much country at all, but I can handle these three. They can really sing and they aren't that hard on the eyes, either. See, I told you... I live in Georgia, I now have a redneck, and I'm recommending country music...

A question from one of SmackDown!'s GTV's Thursday night... did Val get Terri pregnant again? Isn't she still mad about him dumping her the first time?

A WCW.com thought... did you notice that they named their new feature "Hot Newz" with a "z" right when Russo came back?

Let's see if there's anything else I possibly want to cover before the already-late History... nope.

3.29:

1999 - On Nitro live from Toronto, Bret Hart challenged Greenberg. Greenberg went for a spear and ended up KOing himself due to Bret's metal plate. Bret then announced that he quit, which we all take with a grain of salt. Backstage, "Bookerman" Kevin Sullivan collapsed and went into convulsions, possibly due to a negative reaction to precription medicine.

1998 - The WWF's WrestleMania XIV was live from Boston. The main event started the whole "put Austin in the WM main event as the challenger and let him win" thing, as Stone Cold won the WWF Title from Shawn Michaels. Following the match, outside "enforcer" Mike Tyson KOed HBK, which pretty much signaled the death of Shawn's in-ring career. We also had the first battle (of about 8000) between "brothers" Kane and The Undertaker, this one won by the 'Taker. The big thing was guest ring announcer Pete Rose getting tombstoned by Kane, another WrestleMania tradition (one that BETTER happen this year, too). Also on the card... LOD 2000, making their returns with Sunny in her little showgirl outfit, won a 15-team battle royal ... Lightheavyweight champ Taka Michinoku d. Aguila ... European champ HHH d. Owen Hart ... Marc Mero & Sable d. The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust & Luna ... I-C champ The Rock d. Ken Shamrock by reverse decision ... Cactus Jack & Terry Funk d. The New Age Outlaws in a dumpster match to win the tag belts, which would be given back to the Outlaws the next night on Raw.

1994 - Over in London, England, Viscera, then as Mabel, and Mo won the WWF World tag team titles from The Quebecers. See 3.31.

1987 - WrestleMania III was l-i-v-e from The Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan, and had that record-setting attendance of 93,173 (compared to Uncensored 2000, which had what... 3,000?). The main event was the two big guys going at it... WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. Hogan won, got in his bodyslam on Andre, and that's that. The real big match, though, was the I-C title match between Ricky Steamboat and champion Randy Savage. It was a classic, won in a little under fifteen minutes by Steamboat. Here's something for you, straight from the PWI Almanac... "Roddy Piper, in his retirement match, defeated Adrian Adonis in 6:20"... in his RETIREMENT MATCH? That was thirteen years ago and the guy is still around! Also on the card... Rick Martel & Tom Zenk d. Bob Orton & Don Muraco ... Billy Jack Haynes and Hercules went to a double-countout ... WWF.com video reviewer extrodinaire Hillbilly Jim, Haiti Kid & Little Beaver d. King Kong Bundy, Lord Littlebrook & Little Tokyo ... Harley Race d. JYD ... Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake d. The Rougeaus ... The Hart Foundation & Danny Davis d. The British Bulldogs & Tito Santana ... Butch Reed d. Koko B. Ware ... The Honky Tonk Man d. Jake Roberts ... The Iron Sheik (JERRY JERRY JERRY) & Nikolai Voloff d. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell.

Birthdays - It's Michael Hayes' birthday, so put in those old tapes of "Superstars" and watch Dox Hendrix preview PPVs.

3.30:

Believe it or not, not a thing happened today. That's OK, plenty on the rest of the week.

3.31:

1996 - The Pond in Anaheim served as the home of WrestleMania XII (not to mention WrestleMania 2000), which featured the pretty cool "Iron Man" match for the WWF Title. Shawn Michaels won it in overtime thanks to some sweet chin music for Bret Hart. I doubt fans would last through 61:52 worth of wrestling today. The Ultimate Warrior made his 21st WWF return, beating Hunter Hearst-Helmsley in about a minute and a half. The bigger story in the long run was backstage after the match, as Marc Mero broke up a squabble between HHH and his woman of the night Sable. Roddy Piper beat Goldust in a pretty crazy "Hollywood Backlot Brawl", and the footage of Piper (in white bronco) chasing after Goldust on the streets of California seemed eerily familar to footage of another chase involving a white bronco. In the end, Piper, being the wild and crazy guy that he is, tore Goldust's gold outfit off, revealing Goldust's golden body and black lingerie. And Terri liked him for what? The only title change was during the "Free For All" on the Prevue Network, with the Bodydonnas beating the Godwinns thanks to Sunny showing off her Slammy Award-winning buns in the finals of the tag title tournament. Also on that "Free For All", we had the WrestleMania match to beat all matches... The Huckster against the Nacho Man with guest referee Billionaire Ted. It turns out that both expired mid-match, Ted telling Scheme Gene he'll just buy some more, and the FTC Man coming after Ted. Hey, I thought it was funny. Also on the card... Owen Hart, British Bulldog & Vader d. Yokozuna, Jake Roberts, & Ahmed "Gut" Johnson ... Steve Austin d. Savio Vega ... The Undertaker d. Diesel.

1994 - Two days after they won the belts, Men on a Mission lost the WWF World tag team titles back to The Quebecers in Sheffield, England.

1989 - On a card in Atlanta, Sting won the NWA TV title from Mike Rotundo (who seems to fill up the history this week).

1985 - The original WrestleMania was broadcast via closed-circuit TV from the world famous MSG. The main event was hyped like crazy, with Hulk Hogan & Mr. T (I pity the fool... and you can quote me on that) defeating Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff. The two title matches both resulted in a title change, with Women's champ Lelani Kai losing to Wendi Richter and World tag team champions Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo losing to Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik. For you history buffs, the first WrestleMania match ever was David Sammartino and Brutus Beefcake going to a double-DQ. Also on the card... Rick Steamboat d. Matt Borne ... King Kong Bundy d. S.D. Jones ... Andre the Giant d. Big John Studd ... JYD d. Greg Valentinee.

Birthdays - Mike Rotundo celebrates his big day today with a lap dance from Leia Meow (or Kevin Sullivan, whichever he chooses).

4.01:

1996 - I-C champion Goldust and Savio Vega finished a match in controversial fashion which we thought saw Savio win the title. The title was held up, a rematch was held, and Goldust regained the vacant belt later in the evening (but broadcast on Raw - I think - the next week).

1992 - Paul Roma got his first win as a pro boxer, getting a TKO in 47-seconds against Norman Fortini. Pay-per-view fans were relieved that it wasn't a Tyson fight, or they would've spent fifty bucks on those 47 seconds.

1990 - This time around, WrestleMania VI was in the Skydome in Toronto. I remember I used to rent the video of this all the time! I loved that little ring-cart that they drove the wrestlers to and fro in. That was cool. Anyway, the main event featured Hulk Hogan against the Ulllllllltimate Warrior... and was actually pretty good! I-C champ Warrior pinned WWF Champ Hogan to win the belt. The WWF's first-ever mixed tag match was held, with Dusty Rhodes & the late Sapphire beating Randy Savage and Sensational Queen Sister Sherri Martel. There were two title changes... Demolition regained the World tag titles from Andre the Giant & Haku and Ted DiBiase regained the Million Dollar Title from Jake Roberts. Also on the card... Rick Martel d. Koko B. Ware ... Earthquake d. Hercules ... Brutus Beefcake d. Mr. Perfect ... Roddy Piper and Bad New Brown went to a double-countout ... The Hart Foundation d. The Bolsheviks ... The Barbarian d. Tito Santana ... The Orient Express d. The Rockers ... Hacksaw Jim Duggan d. Dino Bravo ... Big Boss Man d. Akeem ... Rick Rude d. Jimmy Snuka. Oh yeah, the attendance wasn't that shabby either... 67,678.

1989 - History was made as Jerry Lawler lost the USWA heavyweight title for the first time, to Master of Pain in Memphis.

1987 - I don't know if this is the exact date, but it was in April 1987.. Global Wrestling became the first publically traded wrestling organization, with seven million shares of stock available at an initial offering of 40 cents a share.

1985 - Ditto for not having a date here, but it was in April 1985 and what better day than the first day of the month... in need of revenue (which is doubtful today), Vince McMahon sold his TBS time slot to Jim Crockett for one million dollars.

1979 - While we're in the dateless April days... the WWWF droped the "Wide" to become the World Wrestling Federation.

1957 - Back on April Fools' Day 1957, Danny Hodge became the first wrestler to appear on the cover of "Sports Illustrated."

4.02:

1995 - Another day, another WrestleMania... this one being XI from the WWF's backyard in Hartford, CT. You know the big thing... Lawrence Taylor wrestling for the first time, the last time, and the only time against Bam Bam Bigelow. Yes, he won. Salt 'n Pepa (whatever happened to THEM?) did their LT version of "What a Man" and a fish called Mongo was one of LT's football friends in his corner. The better match was the other half of the main event, with Diesel (with Pamela Anderson, who was pretty hot that night), defending his WWF Title against Shawn Michaels (against Jenny McCarthy, who's not bad herself... whatever happened to Singled Out?). Diesel won, but it was all for nothing as some stuff would happen the next night. Also on the card... The Allied Powers d. Jacob & Eli Blu (yeah, we laughed then, but who's been WCW tag champs now?) ... Razor Ramon d. I-C champ Jeff Jarrett by DQ ... The Undertaker d. King Kong Bundy ... Owen Hart & mystery partner Yokozuna d. World tag team champions The Smokin' Gunns to win the belts ... Bret Hart d. Mr. Bob Backlund in an "I Quit" match.

1993 - In Radnor, PA, Tony Stetson & Larry Winters won the ECW tag belts from The Super Destroyers. See tomorrow.

1989 - Because one WrestleMania on a day isn't enough, WrestleMania V was live from President Trump Plaza in Atlantic City. The main event was the big "Mega-Powers Collide" deal, with Hulk Hogan doing his usual WrestleMania thing of winning the World title, this time from Randy Savage. Thanks to help from Bobby Heenan, the late Rick Rude won the I-C belt from the Ullllltimate Warrior. And that's about the only notable things on the card worth mentioning. Also on that card... Hercules d. King Haku ... The Twin Towers (Bossman and Akeem, not the height-challenged guys from Raw) d. The Rockers ... Ted DiBiase and Brutus Beefcake went to a double-countout ... The Bushwhackers d. The Rougeaus ... Mr. Perfect d. The Blue Blazer ... World tag champs Demolition d. Warlord, Barbarian & Mr. Fuji ... Dino Bravo d. Ron Garvin ... Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard d. Strike Force ... Jake Roberts d. Andre the Giant ... The Hart Foundation d. Rhythm & Blues ... Bad News Brown and Hacksaw Jim Duggan went to a double-DQ ... Terry Taylor (who I think was the Red Rooster at the time) d. Bobby Heenan.

Meanwhile over in New Orleans, the NWA's sixth Clash of the Champions was on the telly. The big match was a best-of-three falls match, with NWA World champ Ricky Steamboat beating Ric Flair (probably two falls to one). The only title change was Steve Williams & Mike Rotundo winning the World tag belts from The Road Warriors. Also on the card... The Great Muta d. Steven Casey ... Bob Orton d. Dick Murdoch ... Ranger Ross d. The Iron Sheik (RANGER ROSS?) ... Rick Steiner & Eddie Gilbert d. Dan Spivey & Bookerman Kevin Sullivan.

1960 - In New Haven, CT, Red & Lou Bastien won the WWF World tag team titles from Eddie & Dr. Jerry Graham.

4.03:

1995 - One night after WrestleMania XI, enemies went back to being friends again. Psycho Sid went psycho and did three powerbombs on Shawn Michaels, which prompted Diesel to run out and give an assist. Awww, it's the Dudes with Attitudes. Also, Alundra Blazye regained the Women's belt from Bull Nakano. Meanwhile in Memphis, Razor Ramon won the USWA heavyweight belt from Bill Dundee.

1993 - In good ol' Philly, Don Muraco won the ECW heavyweight belt from The Sandman. The Suicide Blonds regained the tag belts from Tony Stetson & Larry Winters, too.

1908 - That's no typing, that's 1908. Frank Gotch won the NWA World title from George Hackenschmidt when George walked out mid-match.

Birthdays - Lance Storm celebrates a birthday.

4.04:

1998 - Over in Tokyo, the largest attendance for an event in Japan ever (70,000, give or take a few) witnesed Antonio Inoki's retirement card. Inoki, at age 55, beat Don Frye with Muhammad Ali and others looking on. Meanwhile in Buffalo, NY, Rob Van Dam won the ECW TV belt from Bam Bam Bigelow and would go on to hold it forever. A few miles over in Osaka, Masa Chono won the IWGP heavyweight belt from Tatsumi Fujinami.

1994 - In Hiroshima, Tatsumi Fujinami won the IWGP heavyweight belt from Shinya Hashimoto.

1993 - WrestleMania IX was live from Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. Jim Ross made his WWF debut in a toga and Harold Finkel became "Finkus Maximus" for a night. Yokozuna won the WWF Title from Bret Hart thanks to Mr. Fuji's salt of doom, but your hero and mine, Hulk Hogan, came out to help (cough cough) Bret. Fuji issued a challenge to Hogan, who accepted, pinned Yoko, and won the WWF Title. The next time he defended it, I believe it was in the rematch against Yoko at the King of the Ring on June 13th. Then, he disappeared. Because his spotlight is never bright enough, Hulk and buddy Brutus Beefcake (in that dorky mask) wrestled Money Inc. for the tag titles. They lost by DQ, so I guess Hulk felt his spotlight just wasn't bright enough until he won a belt at a WrestleMania. Also on the card... Tatanka d. I-C champ Shawn Michaels by DQ ... The Steiners d. The Headshrinkers ... Doink d. Crush ... Razor Ramon d. Bob Backlund ... Lex Luger d. Mr. Perfect ... The Undertaker d. Giant Gozalez (ha ha).

1992 - Vincent Kennedy McMahon and the gang at TitanSports announced their new adventure... the WBF. That's right, the World Bodybuilding Federation. Every week on USA, "WBF Body Stars" was aired and featured newcomer Lex Luger. It failed. The WBF is no more. Still, get that ICOPRO!

1984 - Jack & Jerry Brisco won the WWF World tag team titles from Chief Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood.

My WrestleMania predictions... I'll go with the sentimental favorite, Mick Foley, winning the main event. I see Jericho winning the I-C belt and Kirk Angel keeping the Euro belt (don't worry, Benoyt will win it on Raw or SmackDown!). The Hardys will win the tag belts and we'll have a great match (I came CLOSE when I did my predictions a few weeks ago... didn't I predict the Hardys vs Dudleys in a "Hell in a Cell"?). Because they are more over, Too Cool and Chyna will beat 3/4th of the Radicals. Because X-Pac (unfortunately) NEVER loses, he and Dogg will beat Kane and Rikishi. I'll go with the majority, though, and say Pete Rose gets his third Tombstone and maybe his nose between Rikishi's crack, too. If Pete isn't there, I'm going on strike. In the match nobody cares about, Boss Man & Bull Buchanan will beat the Godfather and D'Lo Brown, then D'Lo can get back into singles matches. I wouldn't mind a rekindling of the D'Lo vs X-Pac series we had a while back. Steve Blackman will accept the cheese at last as he and Al Snow beat T&A. As far as the catfight, I think we all know that it's not who wins that counts, it's who get nekkid, so I'll say we'll get a few bare boobs for our money. And THAT's WrestleMania.

Next week (4.05 to 4.11)... two Spring Stampedes, two more WrestleManias, Vader goes on attack, and more! See you then!
