THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 2.23.00 to 2.29.00

Just to let you know what I am listening to as I type this so you can go out and buy it, it's the Dave Matthews Band's "Listener Supported." Very cool. DMB is very cool. I have nothing else to say here. Onward to the history...

2.23:
1997 - WCW had their seventh annual SuperBrawl, this time airing it live on pay-per-view from San Fransisco's Cow Palace (if someone could explain to me why it's called the Cow Palace, I would appreciate it [Click here, you lazy bum. - CRZ]). The main event was one we've all seen one too many times... Hulk Hogan against Roddy Piper, this time with Hogan pinning Piper. The good matches included another in the great Benoit-Sullivan matches, this one being a San Fransisco death match (because a Boston death match just wouldn't work), U.S. champ Eddy Guerrero pinning Chris Jericho, Syxx winning the Cruiserweight belt from Dean Malenko, and one of those awesome six-man luchadore matches (this one featuring Konnan, La Parka, and Villano IV against Air Quasi, Super Calo, and Ciclope). Also on the card: TV champ Prince Iaukea beat Ron Misterio, Jr. ... DDP beat Buff Bagwell by DQ (hey... aren't they feuding NOW?) ... Public Enemy (we've got a steal for you... that's DEAL, you idiot!) won a triangle match against Harlem Heat 1997 and the Faces of Fear ... Jeff Jarrett pinned Steve McMichael. Hey, it sounds SO much better than the card for 2000's SuperBrawl sounded!

1992 - The LPWA had a "Super Ladies Showdown" pay-per-view live from Rochester, NY. A tournament was held to crown an LPWA Japanese champ, and included... first round: Denise Storm pinned Susan Greene, Reggie Bennett pinned Yukari Osawa, Harley Saito pinned Mizuki Endo, and Eagle Sawai pinned Madori Saito ... Second round: Storm beat Bennett by DQ, Saito and Sawai went to a time-limit draw and Saito won on points ... Finals: Saito beat Storm to win the belt. There were some non-tournament matches, too, including: Milki Handa & Mami Kitamura beating Lisa Starr & Allison Royal ... Shinobu Kandori pinning Desiree Peterson ... Black Venus pinning Rockin' Robin ... Lelani Kai & Judy Martin defending their tag titles against Bambi & Malia Hosaka ... Terri Power (sounds familar...) winning the LPWA title from Lady X.

1990 - Buster Douglas, serving as guest referee, knocks out Randy Savage on the WWF's Saturday Night special on NBC. Originally, Mike Tyson was supposed to be the referee of the Savage-Hogan match, but Buster Douglas kinda knocked him out and the WWF wanted to hold off on Tyson until DX was formed.

1939 - Back in the good ol' days, Lou Thesz won the NWA World title from Everett Marshall.

SIDENOTE: I thought I should share today's "WWF Fact" from the "WWF Fact-a-Day 2000" calendar since it deals with our favorite wrestler, and is going to make us all change our favorite TV show.

2.24:
1997 - Live from New York, it's RAW is ECW! ECW wrestlers "invaded" the return of the WWF's Raw to the Manhattan Center, mainly due to ECW desperately begging for people to order their first PPV, Barely Legal (Did I say that? I mean getting back at Jerry Lawler for calling them "Extremely Crappy Wrestling"). Sabu flew off the big "R" from the entranceway and the bWo was there. That's all I remember.

1995 - After the NWA World title didn't mean much to anybody, Dan Severn won it from Chris Candido.

1992 - Here's a heavyweight title match for ya... Koko B. Ware won the USWA Heavyweight belt from Kamala.

1991 - Back before having SuperBrawl in February was hip, WCW had Wrestle War instead. This one came live from Phoenix, yet Charles Barkley did NOT cut an interview with Ric Flair. Flair was part of the main event though the first ever "War Games" match (you know, the cool match... before it was Hogan/Sting/Savage/Luger vs Meng/Zodiac/Kamala/Shark). Flair, Barry Windham, Sid Vicious, and Larry Zbyszko ended up beating Sting, Brian Pillman, and the Steiners when Nick Patrick called for the bell as Pillman was unconsious from two Sid powerbombs. The NWA World tag belts changed hands, as The Freebirds won the belts from Doom. In other assorted stuff... Six-Man Tag champs Junkyard Dog, Rick Morton, and Tommy Rich beat The State Patrol & Big Cat ... Bobby Eaton pinned Brad Armstrong (B to the U to the double-Z) ... Itsumi Yamasaki & Mami Kitamura beat Miss A & Miki Handa ... Dustin Rhodes pinned Buddy Landell ... The Young Pistols beat the Royal Family ... Terry Taylor won a no-DQ match against "Z-Man" Tom Zenk ... Stan Hansen and Vader went to a double-DQ ... U.S. champ Lex Luger beat Dan Spivey.

2.25: 1995 - And you thought Lawler would only be involved with the USWA title once this week... nooooo. It must have been a bad week for him though, because he lost his title (this was his 20th time holding the belt) to Bill Dundee. Meanwhile over in Philadelphia, our favorites Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko won the ECW tag belts from Sabu and some guy named Tasmaniac.

1990 - It's the first ever Wrestle War! The NWA aired this one from Greensboro, NC... home of somebody, I'm sure. The main event resulted in World champ Ric Flair beating U.S. champ Lex Luger by countout (a countout in the main event... that must have sucked). No title changes, but you MIGHT have missed such excitement as: Kevin Sullivan & Buzz Sawyer beating the Dynamic Dudes ... Norman the Lunatic pinning Cactus Jack ... The Rock 'n Roll Express beating the Midnight Express ... The Road Warriors winning a Chicago street fight (in Greensboro) against the Skyscrapers ... U.S. tag champs Tom Zenk & Brian Pillman beating the Freebirds ... World tag champs the Steiners beating Arn & Ole Anderson. Wow.

Birthdays - WHOOOOOO! It's Ric Flair's birthday! The Nature Boy is 51 if my match is correct (1949).

2.26:
1997 - Our first WWF European champion was crowned! In a tournament final held in Berlin (not Berlyn... and I think it was televised the next week), the British Bulldog beat Owen Hart. Who else did you expect to win the European title... an American Olympic gold medalist? Oh, wait...

1990 - The Jerry Lawler USWA Heavyweight Title tracker... this time, he lost it to Jimmy Valiant. This was only Lawler's fourth time holding the belt, so I guess he could afford to lose it. Don't worry, he wins it back.

2.27:
1998 - OK, THIS is funny. A near-riot happens at a WCW house show in Lincoln, Nebraska, when Chris Jericho makes negative comments about the Cornhuskers. 30 cops have to come in to stop trash throwing. Later in the card, Curt Hennig makes a comment about 'Huskers coach Tom Osbourne, causing near-riot number two. IT'S JUST A SHOW, PEOPLE!

1973 - Sure, Triple H can wrestle in five matches, but Giant Baba competed in a series of ten matches. In no particular order... against Bruno Sammartino (one win, one draw), Wilbur Snyder (one win, one draw), Terry Funk (win), Abdullah the Butcher (win), The Destroyer (win), Don Leo Jonathan (win - another guy with three first names), Pat O'Connor (win), and Bobo Brazil (win).

2.28:
1994 - Jim Crockett holds a taping in New York for the new World Wrestling Network. Among those appearing... Sabu, Terry Funk (dead man walking), Hawk, Public Enemy (we have a steal for you... that's DEAL, you idiot... wait, I used that my one time this week, didn't I?), Jake Roberts, and Missy Hyatt. I'm guessing it was a failure since I never hear about the WWN nowadays.

1987 - Jim Neidhart (not Tank Abbott) is indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of assaulting and interfering with a flight attendant. He was acquitted, because the glove didn't fit. And you know... if the glove don't fit, you must acquitt.

2.29:
1992 - WOW! A Leap Day pay-per-view! And it's WCW's SuperBrawl II in Milwaukee! Sounds like a decent card, too, with the main event being Sting winning the World title from Lex Luger. U.S. champ Rick Rude kept his title after Rick Steamboat's little ninja guy (who just happened to be Paul E. Dangerously in this case) hit the Dragon with a cell phone. We also had Brian Pillman winning the Lightheavyweight belt from Jushin Liger in a great match. There was some other stuff on the card, too... Marcus Alexander Bagwell pinned Terrence Taylor ... Ron Simmons pinned Cactus Jack (that would be a GREAT match nowadays) ... Van Hammer & Tom Zenk beat Vinnie Vegas & Richard Morton ... Barry Windham & Dustin Rhodes beat Steve Austin & Larry Zbyszko ... World tag champs Bobby Eaton & Arn Anderson beat the Einsteiners by DQ.

If anybody knows, did PWI put out a PWI Almanac this year? If they did, I must have totally missed it. Excuse me... Books-A-Million totally missed getting it so I could buy it and advance this column.

Since I mentioned the "WWF Fact-a-Day 2000" calendar I got for Christmas, how about the "Austin Powers Quote-a-Day calendar?" And heeeeere's the quotes!

2.23 - "Shh!"
2.24 - "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Shh!"
2.25 - "Let me tell you a little story about a man named 'Shh.'"
2.26 to 2.27 - "Shh, even before you start."
2.28 - "That was a pre-emptive 'shh.'"
2.29 - "Just know I have a whole bag of 'shh' with your name on it."
And just to wrap it up, 3.01 - "www.shhh.com.org"

Next week (3.01 to 3.07)... March Madness begins! Among the stuff I'll be talking about... one Living Dangerously, Pat Patterson gets accused of sexual misconduct (insert Hyatte joke here), the first Slammys, and more! Until then... peace.
