THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 2.9.0 to 2.15.0

Hope everybody has a Happy Valentine's Day! On to the ratings this week in history, followed by the actual history. Enjoy! The dog shows are still attacking Raw in the ratings!

2.15.99: Raw 5.9, Nitro 3.9

2.09.98: Nitro 4.6, Raw 3.2

2.10.97: Nitro 3.8, Raw not shown due to the dog show

2.12.96: Nitro 3.7, Raw not show due to the dog show

2.09:
1998 - The Steiners win the WCW World tag belts from the Outsiders in El Paso on what must've been either Nitro or Thunder (the greatest show on television... that follows Ripley's Believe it or Not).

1933 - That's a LONG time ago! Ed Don George (three first names for his name... wow) won the NWA World title from Gus Sonnenberg.

2.10:
Birthdays - OH BOY, it's Gentleman Chris Adams' birthday!

2.11:
1999 - It's THUNDER! The highlights were few... in fact, the only thing I found interesting was Brunswick's very own Glacier selling his entrance lighting to the Cat and his outfit to Kaz Hayashi. THAT lasted for a while.

1996 - WCW held their SuperBrawl VI live from St. Petersburg, Florida. First, there was the king of all weekly shows, WCW Main Event, live on the Superstation. How about a main event of Lochness vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan? How abut Hugh Morrus vs Chris Kanyon, Big Bubba Rogers & V.K. Wall Street against Joey Maggs & Sgt. Craig Pittman, and the Road Warriors against Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater? Anyway, onto SuperBrawl. SuperBrawl had a tradition for a few years of having a double main event, both in a steel cage ("Thundercage"). This year, Ric Flair won the World title against Macho Man when Elizabeth turned on him and Hulk Hogan beat WEEEELLL IT'S THE GIANT. Tag champs Lex Luger & Sting (Sting trusted Luger, Luger turned on him, he trusted him, turned on him... up through 2000) defended their belts twice, first beating Harlem Heat and then going to a no-contest with the Road Warriors. This was also the home of the famous "bookerman" incident. The late, great Brian Pillman was facing Kevin Sullivan in a strap match when Pillman through down the strap and said, "I respect you, bookerman." Well, WCW sent out Arn Anderson to take Pillman's place. How about Konnan defending his U.S. belt (Konnan... U.S. Champ? UGH) against One Man Gang? TV champ Johnny B. Badd (with the Diamond Doll) defeating DDP? The Nasty Boys beating Public Enemy (that's deal, you idiot!) in a street ight? Yeah, sounds like a better card than WCW in 2000, which is crazy considering how we get Konnan against the Gang.

1984 - Tito Santana wins the WWF I-C belt from the Magnificent Muraco.

1969 - In Tampa, Dory Funk, Jr., wins the NWA World belt from Gene Kiniski.

2.12:
1998 - Over on the Superstation and the smash hit Thunder, Ric Flair beat Lex Luger by DQ and (surprise) Greenburg beat Brunswick's very own Glacier.

1990 - A tournament to determine the NWA U.S. tag champs ended (it started on January 23rd, but I didn't know about it then. To break this down for you... ROUND ONE: Brian Pillman & Tom Zenk d. Jack Victory & Rip Morgan, Midnight Express d. Rock 'n Roll Express, Freebirds d. Tommy Rich & Eddie Gilbert, Johnny Ace & Shane Douglas d. MOD Squad ... ROUND TWO: Pillman & Zenk d. Midnight Express and Freebirds d. Douglas & Ace ... FINALS: Pillman & Zenk d. Freebirds to win the belts.

2.13:
1999 - It's WCW Saturday Night on the Superstation! Chris Benoit did double duty, beating Horace Hogan and then teaming with Dean Malenko to beat Brian Adams and Vincent. Hey, Vincent did double duty, too -- he wrestled earlier in the night and announced that he is now Vince, not Vincent. Meanwhile on Shotgun, Owen Hart beat Billy Gunn, HHH beat Droz, Edge and Christian (with Gangrel) beat Matt & Jeff Hardy (before they were "feuding"), and in the main event... Mideon pinned Tiger Ali Singh. Those were the days... superstars on Shotgun. Well, we still do get D'Lo Brown. And Mideon.

More importantly in 1999, WWF RAW Saturday Night was aired taped on USA from the Skydome in Toronto. The big match was Steve Austin having to face the Corporation in a gauntlet match. He beat Shamrock, Test, Kane, Chyna, and the Bossman, but was pinned by Mr. McMahon. Also on card: The Rock pinned Steve "Cheese" Blackman, X-Pac beat Kane by DQ (geez, do these two EVER QUIT FEUDING?), The Godfather beat Viscera by DQ, Gillberg pinned Goldust (if I remember correctly, Bluedust's "blue bath" distracted Goldust), and D'Lo Brown pinned Jeff Jarrett.

1997 - I bet you guys and gals all remember this... on the live Thursday Raw Thursday (because two Thursdays are better than one), Shawn Michaels vacates his WWF Title due to a knee injury. Oh yeah... he also "lost his smile." Also on that show, "blue chipper" Rocky Maivia won the I-C title in an upset victory against Hunter Hearst-Helmsley (or was it Hunter-Hearst Helmsley).

1989 - Hey, the NWA Clash of the Champions is in Cleveland, Ohio! Your main event... The Road Warriors & Tenryu going to a no-contest with Michael Hayes, JYD, and Sting. Plus, we had... Rick Steiner d. Rip Morgan .. Rick Steamboat d. Bob Bradley (any relation to Bill?) ... Steve Williams & Mike Rotundo d. The Fantastics ... Lex Luger d. the Blackmailer (hey, that's an angle for today!) ... Butch Reed d. Steve Casey ... The Midnight Express d. The Russian Assassins.

2.14:
1999 - You know this event... the WWF had their St. Valentine's Day Massacre in Memphis, home of the King... well, both of them (and a few "Lawler for Mayor" signs). We had a cool double main event, with Steve Austin beating Vince McMahon in a steel cage match for the title shot at WrestleMania. This would be the match where Paul Wight, with long hair, rips through the ring a-la Undertaker and tosses Austin into the cage, which gives and to the outside flys Austin. The other half of the main event was The Rock and WWF Champ Mankind going to a draw in a last man standing match. Bob Holly won the Hardcore belt from Al Snow in the Mississippi River, which would get him that Hardcore Holly name. Val Venis won I-C gold against Ken Shamrock, Goldust beat Bluedust, the Boss Man beat Mideon (WOW), Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett beat D'Lo Brown & Mark Henry in a match used solely to move along the just-started Debra vs Ivory feud, and Chyna & Kane beat HHH & X-Pac. For those of you wondering about the live HeAT before the PPV, Billy Gunn beat Tiger Ali Singh and Viscera beat Test. We also had Mankind being trained by Mr. Bob Backlund, the Iron Sheik, and Dominuc Denucci (sorry if I butchered his name).

1994 - For those of us who want our weekly report on Jerry Lawler and the USWA gold, he lost the heavyweight belt to the late Eddie Gilbert this time around.

Birthdays - Extreme guys need birthday cake, too (but why would that matter when you have Francine anyway, right?)... so give Tommy Dreamer some. Same goes for ultimate fighters, so pass Kenny Shamrock a slice of that cake.

2.15:
1999 - Live on "Raw is War" from Birmingham, Shane McMahon and Chyna defeated HHH and European champ X-Pac. The stipulations said that if someone pins X-Pac, they win the title. Well, Shane pinned X-Pac. Also on that Raw, The Rock regained the WWF Title from Mankind in a ladder match thanks to WEEELLL IT'S THE BIG SHOW and his chokeslam from the ladder. Hardcore Holly also beat Steve "Cheese" Blackman in a match for the Hardcore title.

1998 - Louie Muciollo, who we knew better as Louie Spicolli, is found dead at his home at the age of 27.

Also in 1998, The WWF turned this month's In Your House into No Way Out (which ended up having "of Texas" tacked onto the end since No Way Out just happened to be an acronym for NWO... or vice versa... one of those two). The main event was an eight-man tag match which seemed to be no-DQ, with Steve Austin, Owen Hart, Cactus Jack, and Chainsaw Charlie defeating HHH, Savio Vega (subbing for the injured Shawn Michaels), and the New Age Outlaws. Also on the card, Ken Shamrock, Big Ahmed T. Johnson, Chainz, Skull, and 8-Ball beat Faarooq, Mark Henry, Rocky Maivia, Kama Mustafa, and D'Lo Brown. Geez, let's cram a bunch of guys into the last two matches! Plus, Bradshaw beat NWA North American champ Jeff Jarrett (in Aztec outfit... which I kinda liked) by DQ, the Godwinns beat the Quebecers (who I liked), Lightheavyweight champ Taka Michinoku beat Pantera in what was probably the match of the card, and the Headbangers ended up beating Marc Mero and the Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea. Oh wait... it was the Artist Formerly Known as Goldust. My bad.

Next week (2.16 to 2.22)... five SuperBrawls, one Chi-Town Rumble, one Final Four, one In Your House without a fancy name, a suspension, and more! Have a great Valentine's Day, and spend it with A LOVED ONE! (now THAT was a ripoff!)
