THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 2.2.0 to 2.8.0

It's February! It's Groundhog Day! Whoopie. Onwards with the history.

First, a new History feature: the ratings comparison. Basically, a look at each year in the Monday night wars going by the current week. Here goes...

2.08.99: Nitro 5.67, Westminister Dog Show 3.5.

2.02.98: Nitro 4.9, Raw 3.5.

2.03.97: Nitro 3.04, Raw 2.64.

2.05.96: Nitro 2.9, Raw 2.7.

2.02:

1986 - Dennis Condrey & Bobby Eaton (the Midnight Express, right?) win the NWA World tag team titles from The Rock & Roll Express.

2.03:

1996 - The NWA holds its inaugural Eddie Gilbert Memorial Brawl in Cherry Hill, NJ. Also, The Eliminators (Saturn and Kronus) win the ECW tag gold from Cactus Jack & Mikey Whipwreck. Years later, Cactus and Saturn reunite on Raw is War! Wow!

Birthdays - Alright! It's the birthday of... THEMONSTERMENG!!!! Rock on, it's Marty Jannetty's birthday, too. I bet he wishes he had thrown Shawn Michaels through the Barber Shop window and not vice-versa, now.

2.04:

1999 - On the Superstation, Thunder started entering its suckiness (actually, it was probably already there). On the flip side, Chris Jericho beat Scotty Riggs, Norman Smiley beat The Disciple (whatever happened to THAT GUY?), and DDP beat Brunswick, Georgia's very own Glacier.

1995 - Some stranger named Tasmaniac, along with Sabu (homicidal, etc.... you know the drill), win the ECW tag belts from Public Enemy (Welcome to the Big Boys shopping network! Boy do we have a steal for you! That's deal, you idiot!).0

2.05:

1998 - Thunder! Superstation! Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the Braves and/or NBA action and/or the Goodwill Games! The main event was pretty darn snappy, with DDP successfully defending his U.S. belt against Chris Benoit. Also on the card, Jim Neidhart beat the late Louie Spicolli and Goldberg's streak continued as he beat a sure main eventer... JIM POWERS.

1994 - Good ol' Sgt. Craig Pittman made his pro debut.

1988 - After 33 years away, professional wrestling returns to broadcast TV with the WWF's Main Event on NBC. And now... SmackDown! is beating the State of the Union in the ratings. Speaking of that Main Event show, Andrew the Giant won his only WWF World title on there by defeating Hulk Hogan. I believe that was when Dave and Earl Hebner did the whole twin referees thing, and I know that's when Andre gave the belt to Mr. WXO Ted DiBiase. Jack Tunney, being the fearless president that he was, vacated the title and put it on the line in the tournament at WrestleMania.

2.06:

1999 - Shotgun! Steve "Cheese" Blackman defeats Tiger Ali Singh (whatever happened to THAT GUY?) and Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett successfully defend their tag belts against the J.O.B. Squad's legendary Scorpio and Bob Holly. Meanwhile on Saturday Night, Chris Jericho beats Damien with the Liontamer (then he put a dress on Damien), Al Greene defeated Brunswick, Georgia's own Glacier, and in the main event... my favorite luchador, La Parka, lost to Bam Bam Bigelow.

1990 - WCW (I think it was WCW by then) held the tenth Clash of the Champions in Corpus Christi, TX. The main event featured Ric Flair and Arn & Ole Anderson winning a cage match against Great Muta, Dragon Master, and Buzz Sawyer. Also on the card... The Steiners d. Doom ... Road Warriors d. Mark Callous (minus cr.. SYMBOL and urn) & Dan Spivey ... Kevin Sullivan d. (Screamin') Norman the Lunatic ... Mil Mascaras d. Cactus Jack ... Brian Pillman (RIP) & Tom Zenk d. The M.O.D. Squad (wasn't that a movie or something with Claire Danes?) ... Steve Williams (minus Ed Ferrera and bottle o' BBQ sauce) d. The Samoan Savage.

1977 - Harley Race wins his second NWA World title by defeating our beloved crazy guy Terry Funk in Toronto.

2.07:

1999 - It's Sunday Night Heat, and it's Too Much defeating Kurrgan and Golga. You might remember this as the night that Too Much and DOA started their little "friendship."

1995 - The ECW RVD... um, TV title is won by Mikey Whipwreck from 2 Cold Scorpio. Remember those videos Scorpio had when he first entered WCW? Those were cool.

1994 - Jerry "The King" Lawler wins the USWA heavyweight belt from the late Eddie Gilbert. For those scoring at home (or even if you're all alone), that would be the King's 18th of 26 title reigns. Meanwhile on Raw, Bastion Booger joins Vince McMahon at the broadcast booth, and Irwin R. Schyster defeats Marty Jannetty.

1992 - Money Inc. won their first of three WWF World tag team titles together by defeating the Legion of Doom. And now... Ted is leading the WXO (what DOES that stand for?) and Irwin... well, he's watching Leia Meow jump up and down like one of the juggies.

1986 - Ted Turner's TBS airs its first prime time wrestling special, with the creative name "Superstars on the Superstation." Yeah, but who would have ever thought "Macho Man" Randy Savage would be a guest on Dinner & A Movie?

1984 - A tournament is held to determine who gets the vacant WWF junior heavyweight belt. Dynamite Kid beats the British Bulldog in the semifinals, and goes on to defeated The Cobra (didn't he feud with Sgt. Craig Pittman?) to win the gold. Gillberg then came out and started his streak.

2.08:

1999 - It's Nitro (read CRZ's "One Year Ago on Nitro" next week for more)! Bischoff cleans, Torrie talks to the camera, Kanyon wears Vercase, Kimberly goes flying out of a car, and... yes... WILL SASSO from MadTV. I could take the guy who says "Make 7 Up Yours", but Sasso was annoying.

1992 - "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich is arrested for attempting to falsify two drug prescriptions. He's released on a $6,000 bond and his father, Fritz, says he would be entering a rehab program.

1986 - Oh yeah! Randy Savage wins his first WWF belt, the I-C belt, from Tito Santana. He would hold it for a year and a month or so, until he lost it... um, wait until the History makes it to March 29. You know, six or seven columns from now.

1971 - Pedro Morales becomes the fourth guy to hold the title that is known today as the WWF World title by defeating Ivan Koloff in... surprise... New York City. Then, they went out for drinks together at WWF New York.

Birthdays - "Classy" Freddie Blassie celebrates another year! Tank Ab... um, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, was born back in 1956! To celebrate his birthday, he's going to put on his New Foundation tights and play taxi driver. It's also Sensational Queen Sister Sherri Martel's birthday. 42ish, if you are wondering. WEEEEEELLLLLL... it's The Big Show.... weeeellll, it's his birthday anyway. New haircut and all.

Next week (2.09 to 2.15)... one SuperBrawl, one St. Valentine's Day Massacre, one No Way Out (of Texas), and one Clash of the Champions!

Feel free to drop by my website and leave me some feedback on my brand spankin' new messageboard. I'll respond, and so on. Come on, it'll be fun. See you next Wednesday (or sometime around then)!
