THE PEOPLE'S COLUMN

Welcome to this week's wondermous edition of The People's Column, where you have the chance to enter the "Show Us Your Cans" contest! Really? No, not really. I'm just ripping off the 7 Up commercial because I couldn't think of any other intro.

How lame was that halftime show? If you guys are going to let Disney put on a halftime show, make it worthwhile! Get Jessica Rabbit out there or something (a real person dressed up like her, not one of those costumes like Mickey Mouse)! Plug Fantasia 2000! Toy Story 2! Hello!? I missed Halftime Heat for THAT? Then again, I had seen everything on Halftime Heat already except the Austin interview and the commercial, which I ended up seeing the next night anyway.

As far as the commercials... my favorite was the E*TRADE commercial with the monkey dancing and the two old guys clapping to "La Cucharacha." I also loved the pregame Budweiser commercial where the Louie (you know, the lizard guy) told the other guy (Frank?) that the ferret posed nude. Then, there was pictures of the ferret alone... then with a cat... and so on. The WWF commercials were OK, the baby one was definitely the best. All three couldn't match up with last year's commercial. I'm starting to like that pets.com puppet, which is sad. Then again, if 20,000 people can love Mr. Socko, why can't I like a sock puppet, too?

I just wish I had money coming out of the wazzo. Then again, I'll take money coming out of anywhere at this point. I'M A POOR COLLEGE STUDENT! Wait... ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE POOR!

As far as the game, it was a good game. I'm glad the Rams won since the Titans beat the Jaguars. I don't remember seeing a single crowd shot of an ABC star. Just Kurt Warner's wife OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Why the heck was she wearing that fuzzy blue thing? I thought she was going to morph into Cookie Monster anytime.

John Rocker suspended... no surprise really. The fine won't hurt him much. Rocker's only problem (well, besides losing the Twisted Sister song) is going to be getting along with Brian Jordan, Randall Simon, and some of the other Braves who aren't ready to forgive and forget yet. I forgive him once, but if he does something this stupid again, he can forget it. Hey, he can be WCW's celebrity wrestler of the year! Put Rocker in there with the nWo against whoever at Bash at the Beach and there you go! Then Pete Rose runs out in a WrestleMania 2000 t-shirt and takes them all out!

I'm going to see the ever wonderful Canadian princess Neve Campbell in "Scream 3" Friday night. So far, I've liked the "Scream" series. If nothing else, Jenny McCarthy is in it this time, too. By the way... whatever happened to "Singled Out"?

Oh yeah... WRESTLING. I knew I was typing this for something!

WWF vs WCW:

WWF: One word for Raw... AWESOME. I liked the simple way Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero, and Saturn were brought in. You know what? This is like a dream signing for Jericho! His favorite guy to team with is Eddy, he had awesome matches with Deano Machino, and he can remind Saturn that he should be wearing a dress! All we need is for Chyna to gain a few pounds, lose most of her hair and dye the rest gray, knock out a few (OK, more than a few) teeth, put on a JPS shirt that covers what she would need to be covering, and there you go! The "conspiracy theory" is on again! Woohoo! ... Harvina... r-i-i-i-ght ... I'm just waiting for the Dudleys to drive good ol' JR through a table ... I'm starting to feel sorry for the Mean Street Posse. But then again, Taka and Funaki job as much as they do! Why not have the guys with talent getting beat up all the time?

WCW: The Titanic continues to sink ... I'll take Bobby Heenan over Mark "I'M A HEEL!!!" Madden, thank you very much ... Maybe stick "Flounder" (who would want to be called "Flounder"?) on Thunder instead of having three play-by-play guys in Tony, Scott, and Mike ... Gee, I was SO SURPRISED when Ric Flair's interview was right around 9:00 ... I think we're set for the return of Lenny and Lodi (finally!), but Lodi says on his webpage (http://www.lodipage.com) that he's going to be called Idol. Does that make it Idol and Ynnel? Who cares, I just want Sky/Standards & Practices/Legs with them. Then again, they play better together. Wait... that didn't sound right ... I WANT THE NITRO GIRLS ALL TOGETHER DANCING ON NITRO! ... OR AT LEAST CHAE! ... Gee, I'm so happy that wonderful KISS Demon gimmick is back. I sure did miss that one.

THE 1999 ANDY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

I know, I know... I'm late with this one. PWI's issue last month was its annual Year in Wrestling issue. Why DDP and Kim get the cover alone, I don't know. Anyway, I thought I would tell you MY award winners and why.

Rookie of the Year:
Readers - Winner: S. McMahon, 1st Runner-Up: E.Karagias, 2nd Runner-Up: V.McMahon, 3rd Runner-Up: L.LeRoux.

I'll agree with Shane as ROY. He impressed me majorly. The field isn't all that great for the rest... Vince, Karagias, LeRoux, David Flair, Gorgeous George, and whoever J.J. The Ring Crew Guy is. For my first runner-up, I'll go with the Rajun' Cajun. 2nd can go to Vince, and 3rd to George on looks alone.

Inspirational Wrestler of the Year:
Readers - Winner: H. Hogan, 1st - B. Hart, 2nd - X-Pac, 3rd - H. Duggan.

What were the readers smoking? Hogan an inspiration? Uh... r-i-i-i-ight. He inspires me to flip to Raw or some other Wednesday night viewing. I'll vote for Mankind as my winner. He won a world title finally (and put butts in seats) AND had the #1 bestseller. My second pick is Bret Hart. Even though I can't stand the guy sometimes, it has to take a lot to wrestle in the same arena where your brother fell to his death. My second runner-up is Eddy Guerrero, since he came back from the wreck in better shape than he left. Third runner-up goes to Hacksaw. I don't know HOW he inspires me, but the guy is still over and its amazing.

Most Improved Wrestler of the Year:
Readers - Winner: J. Lynn, 1st - Hardys, 2nd - B. Holly, 3rd - Kanyon.

I'm going with Hardcore Holly in first. The guy went from making all kinds of left turns to being way over. He has mike skills after all and is a good wrestler, too! My first runners-up (or runner-ups) are the Hardys. What can I say, they are 100% better than before. I guess. Second runners-up goes to Lenny and Lodi. They went from being a Jericho-wannabe and a guy holding up a "John Boy & Billy" sign to having fans actually either love 'em or hate 'em. Plus, they have a hot babe with them now. That's an improvement over Lodi having Reese with him. Third goes to Kane.

Comeback of the Year:
Readers - Winner: E. Guerrero, 1st - B. Bagwell, 2nd - C. Hennig, 3rd - M. Hayes.

Eddy definitely gets my first place vote. He came back twice as good as he was before, WCW should have brught back the "Eddy Guerrero Is My Favorite Wrestler" shirts though. The fans start cheering for him, so they are nowhere in sight. Of course. My first runner-up is Chris Jericho. Let's face it, WCW tried to kill him off there for a while. After his injury, we didn't really see him on TV again until that fateful night in August when the Countdown to the Millennium hit 00:00. Second runner-up goes to Kurt Angle. True, he never left. He did leave TV though. After an appearance or two on Raw and Heat, we didn't hear from him again until he became our Olympic hero. Third runner-up goes to Randy Savage, simply because of Gorgeous George.

Manager of the Year:
Readers - Winner: Debra, 1st - J. Hart, 2nd - B. Alfonso, 3rd - P. Bearer.

My winner is Harold Finkel. The Fink was great as Y2J's second and then in his week or two stint with Curtis Hughes and then the Acolytes. Besides, the field is WEAK. First runner-up goes to Tammy Sytch. Second goes to Ralphus. Third can go to Sky, aka "Standards and Practices."

Feud of the Year:
Readers - Winner: V. McMahon vs S. Austin, 1st - HHH vs Rock, 2nd - J. Lynn vs R. Van Dam, 3rd - Flair vs Hogan.

My winner is Austin vs McMahon as well. They put on some great stuff, it's good to have a break from it though. First runner up for me goes to Mankind vs The Rock. Hilariousness and ultra-violence ensued. Second goes to Edge & Christian vs the Hardys. OK, they didn't really "feud." Third ends with Pete Rose vs Kane.

Most Popular Wrestler of the Year:
Readers - Winner: The Rock, 1st - Austin, 2nd - Goldberg, 3rd - Mankind.

OK, these are most popular to ME. Jericho is your winner. Too Cool gets first runner up, Rikishi Phatu gets second runner up. Third runner up? CHAE. Hey, she did get in that little Nitro Girls backstage brawl, so in my book she's a wrestler.

Most Hated Wrestler of the Year:
Readers - Winner: DDP, 1st - HHH, 2nd - Undertaker, 3rd - Dudleys.

My most hated wrestler was a tie... Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young. If January 2000 counts, Mae young wins hands down (or hopefully, hands up). First runner-up goes to Lex Luger... ZZZZZZZZZ. Second runner-up lands on DDP, and third goes to our inspiration Hulk Hogan.

Match of the Year:
Readers - Winner: Rock vs Mankind, 1st: Vam Dam vs Lynn, 2nd: Austin vs McMahon, 3rd: Rock vs Austin.

See, this is where PWI is at fault. They end the voting sometime like in October. They should have the voting end on December 31st, where every match during the YEAR can be considered. The rightful winner, the Hardys vs Edge & Christian, happened on October 17th. Voting ended shortly after that, so they didn't place. First runner-up goes to your choice of another match in the TIT. Second does, too. Third could go there, or to Austin vs The Rock at WM XV.

Tag Team of the Year:
Readers - Winners: X-Pac & Kane, 1st - Hardys, 2nd - Harlem Heat, 3rd - Dudleys.

My pick for #1 are the Hardys. They put on top-notch matches EVERY time. First runners-up are Edge & Christian for basically the same reason. Second goes to the Acolytes, and third to The Hollys.

Wrestler of the Year:
Readers - Winner: Austin, 1st - Rock, 2nd - Sting, 3rd - Taz.

My pick is The Rock. Rock has almost - if not already - taken the #1 spot as far as fan support in wrestling from Austin. As said during "Have a Bad Day"... "He o-vah big time." Austin gets first runner-up, we'll give second to Tazzzzzz, and just for the heck of it... Jericho gets third.

Editors' Award: Owen Hart.

Without a doubt. It was a sad year and I know I was in a big lull, as were other fans and his fellow wrestlers, after he died. Even though critics say the Raw the night after he died was a ratings ploy, the wrestlers and WWF employees showed true class and it was obvious how much they loved Owen. If those critics think the testimonies shown on Raw were fake, then maybe they should go see the 25 or so not televised that are on WWF.com. Everybody seemed really sad, and I know it's gotta be hard for anyone to step into the Kemper Arena. Owen, we miss you.

BLATANT PLUGS

Let's plug the Hardy Boyz official website this week (www.mattandjeffhardy.com). The Hardys and Francine are the wrestlers that I think interact with their web viewers the most. Check out the messageboard on the Hardys' website. Matt checks in often and responds to numerous questions. Also during the great Baltimore blizzard, Jeff and Christian checked in with tales of their window jumping with Y2J. It's really cool.

If you wanna, I have a message board on my website now. Feel free to drop by and leave me comments on it, I have a special little section just for my [slash] columns. Or you can start your own section.

Well, that's your People's Column for this week. If you haven't made it over to the History column yet, drop on by. Next week, it's the Valentine's edition of The People's Column. Luuuuuuv is in the air! Or something.
