THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 1.19.0 to 1.25.0

Welcome to your weekly dose of history! My name is Andy and I will guide you through this journey of epic porportions. There's a lot to cover this week, with past Royal Rumble, Souled Out, and Clash of the Champions events. So.... let's get busy!

1.19:
1997 - The WWF's annual Royal Rumble is live from San Antonio, Texas. Sure enough, hometown boy Shawn Michaels won the WWF gold back from Psycho Sid. Stone Cold, in his homestate, won the Royal Rumble. Austin was thrown out by Bret Hart, but snuck back in and elimiated Bret for the win. Also on the card... Mascarita Sagrada & La Parkita defeated Mini Vader & Mini Mankind (Did Vader find him and say, "I think I'll call him... Mini Vader"?) and Perry Aguayo, Canek, and Hector Garza battled Jerry "CHiPs" Estrada, Fuerza Guerrera, and Heavy Metal. Did Russo write that one? Sounds doubtful.

1992 - Royal Rumble 1992 was live on PPV from Albany, NY and had one of the greatest performances ever, thanks to Ric Flair. Flair won the Rumble and the vacant WWF title after lasting from #3 through the end. Roddy Piper, substituting for the sick Bret Hart, won the I-C title from the Mountie. How about some hot tag team action... the New Foundation defeated the Orient Express, the Beverly Brothers beat the Bushwhackers (BUT... Jamison got some time with the Genius), and the Natural Disasters defeated LOD by countout.

1991 - This time, we Rumbled in Miami, FL. This was right in the middle of Hulkamania, so guess who won the Rumble? Sgt. Slaughter, right smack in the middle of his anti-USA stint (and I thought he was such an American hero on 'G.I. Joe'), won the world title from the Ulllllllllllltimate Warrior thanks to Macho King Randy Savage's help. Also on the cad... Ted DiBiase & Virgil defeated Dusty & Dustin Rhodes, The Mountie beat Koko B. Ware, Big Boss Man defeated the Barbarian, and the Rockers defeated the Orient Express.

1.20:
1998 - Bobo Brazil, WWF Hall of Famer, dies from complications due to a stroke at the age of 74. Also, on Raw is War, the late, great Owen Hart won the European title by defeating "Hunterdust", which was Goldust as HHH. HHH was champ, but Commissioner Slaughter decided to let the title change stand.

1997 - On THE GREATEST SHOW IN PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Nitro), Randy Savage returned to WCW as a "free agent" (see also: he never left). He had a little sit-in, and if I remember correctly, Sting came out and whispered in his ear, which ended with them joining together.

1992 - Dino Bravo wrestled in his last match, defeating the Barbarian in Montreal.

1.21:
Birthdays - It's time for "Polish Power" himself, Ivan Putski, to celebrate his 59th birthday.

1996 - This time, the WWF's Rumble is in Fresno, CA. Shawn Michaels won the Rumble, which also served as the debut for Vader and a return for Jake Roberts (with snake). The Undertaker (with that goofy looking mask) won by DQ against WWF Champ Bret Hart, Goldust won the I-C belt against Razor Ramon (and brought us Marlena for the first time), and Skip & Zip should have won the tag belts from the Smokin' Gunns (but didn't). Also, the first "Free For All" was shown on the Prevue Channel, with Duke Droese defeating HHH (who would win today?) to win the #30 Rumble spot, leaving HHH with #1).

1992 - WCW's Clash XVIII is in Topeka, Kansas! (I have no clue why that is so exciting!) The only match I really remember from this was the Cactus Jack-Van Hammer falls count anywhere match that ended up with Missy Hyatt in the horse trough. Also on the card... P.N. News beat DDP (ha!)... Steamboat & Sting defeated Rude & Austin... Dustin, Barry, and Ron defeated Arn, Larry, and Bobby... Vinnie Vegas won against Thomas Rich... Freebirds beat Big Josh & Brad Armstrong (B to the A to the double-Z)... Johnny B. Badd beat Richard Morton... Steiners beat Vader & Mr. Hughes... Marcus Alexander Bagwell & Brian Pillman beat Taylor Made Man (ha!) and Tracey Smothers.

1990 - Another Rumble... '90's incarnation was from Orlando, FL. Still in Hulkamania, guess who won the Rumble? Nothing else really of note about the event... Bushwhackers over the Rougeaus, Genius and Brutus Beefcake went to a double countou, Ron Garvin over Greg Valentine, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan over the Boss Man by DQ.

1.22:
1997 - WCW's Clash of the Champions XXXIV is in Milwaukee. The main event, for some reason, was Lex Luger defeating Scott Hall. The rest of the card was a mixed bag... Malenko winning the Cruiserweight belt from Ultimo Dragon, Riggs vs Enos, Jericho/Super Calo/Chavo Jr. vs Konnan/JL/La Parka, Harlem Heat vs Renegade/Joe Gomez, Chono vs Wright, Eddy Guerrero vs Norton, and the Steiners against the Amazing French-Canadians. I never did figure out why Col. Parker was with them. The big match was Chris Benoit against Kevin Sullivan in one of their awesome falls-count-anywhere matches.

1996 - In his second night in the WWF, Vader takes out WWF President Gorilla Monsoon (RIP), which ended up with him being suspended. Roddy Piper was named acting president while Gorilla recovered, for better or for worse. Meanwhile over on Nitro, Ric Flair lost the WCW World title to "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Sting & Lex Luger (they were friends at the time... something that switches on a monthly basis because Sting TRUSTS Lex EVERY SINGLE TIME) won the tag belts from Harlem Heat.

1995 - Rumble... Tampa, FL... Pamela Anderson was there. That's all that really matters. Oh yeah... Bam Bam Bigelow and Tatanka lost in the tag tournament finals against the 1-2-3 Kid and Bob "Spark Plugg" Holly, which prompted the famous LT push. In the actual Rumble, Shawn Michaels came out on top and celebrated with Pam. Bret Hart and Diesel went to a draw, Jeff Jarrett won the I-C title (with help from the Roadie) from Scott Hall, and the Undertaker beat Irwin R. Schyster. Remember how Roddy Piper always used to say "Irwin"?

1994 - One year earlier, same event, this time from Providence, RI. You might remember this Rumble finish... Bret Hart and Lex Luger go out and hit the floor at the same time. Jack Tunney watches the video five hundred times and still can't come up with a winner... so they both win. And how about that World title casket match? Our loving champ, Yokozuna, defeated the Undertaker with the help of ten or so other guys. Yoko also took the top off of the original urn, which caused green smoke to come out of it. Oh yeah... when they were wheeling the casket to the back, lightning struck, Undertaker appeared on the videowall from inside the casket, and magically raised from above the screen. We also had the real heel turn of the late, great Owen Hart. Owen & Bret were facing the Quebecers for the tag titles. Bret wouldn't tag Owen, so Owen kicked him in the knee and the referee stopped the match. I miss Owen. I think we all do.

1.23:
1996 - Clash XXXII was in Las Vegas. In the main event, Ric Flair & The Giant defeated Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage. If I remember correctly, the Megapowers had the returning Elizabeth and Woman with them. Also on the card, Konnan defeated Psicosis, Sting & Lex Luger defeated the Blue Bloods, Brian Pillman pinned Eddy Guerrero, Dean Malenko beat Alex Wright, and there was a double countout match between the Nasty Boys and Public Enemy.

1984 - The legend begins... Hulk Hogan wins his first WWF World title in New York City from the Iron Sheik.

1.24:
1999 - It's the Royal Rumble! Mankind's first world title reign ends as he loses the belt back to The Great One in that "I Quit" match. Vincent Kennedy McMahon won the Royal Rumble, Sable beat Luna in a strap match, X-Pac pinned Gangrel, Ken Shamrock made Billy Gunn giveup, and the Big Boss Man beat Hardcore champ Road Dogg in a non-title match.

1998 - WCW holds its Souled Out PPV live from Dayton, Ohio. In the main matches, Lex Luger defeated Randy Savage and Bret Hart defeated Ric Flair in Bret's first WCW PPV match. Also, Kevin Nash defeated The Giant in the infamous match where Nash apparently messed up the powerbomb. Our paragon of virtue, Chris Jericho, won the Cruiserweight gold from Ron Misterio, Jr.. In matches not as great... The Steiners & Ray Traylor faced Buff Bagwell, Konnan, and Scott Norton and Larry Zbyszko fought against Scott Hall. Oh yeah... Dusty Rhodes joined the nWo.

1993 - This time, the Rumble is in Sacramento, CA. The actual Rumble was won by Yokozuna, who tossed Randy Savage out after Macho STUPIDLY tried to pin him. This was also the Rumble that Diesel came into his own, by tossing out a bunch of guys. Also on the card, Bret Hart defeated Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels beat Marty Jannetty, the Steiners defeated the Beverly Brothers, and Bam Bam Bigelow pinned the Big Boss Man. (Oh, and CRZ was in attendance! - CRZ)

1988 - The NWA's second pay-per-view, Bunkhouse Stampede, is live on PPV from Uniondale, NY. The main event was actually a "bunkhouse stampede", which was won by Dusty Rhodes. Ric Flair lost to Hawk by DQ but kept his world title. Also on the card... Nikita Koloff vs Bobby Eaton and Larry Zbyszko vs Barry Windham. And that's all that was on the card!

1.25:
Birthdays - Hey, alright! It's the Honky Tonk Man's birthday! My mental math says he's in his late 40's.

1999 - The late, great Owen Hart wins the last title belt of his life with Jeff Jarrett, as they win the belts from the Big Boss Man and Ken Shamrock on a live Raw.

1997 - The inaugural Souled Out -- nWo Souled Out - is in Cedar Radids. Nick Patrick reffed every match, the event was shown on PPV in black and white, Eric Bischoff kissed the winner of the Miss nWo Pageant, and only the nWo had theme music. Oh yeah, there were matches! In the main event, Hulk Hogan and The Giant went to a no-decision. One thing used in that match... a nWo gee-tar. Hmmmmm. Eddy Guerrero won a great ladder match against Syxx though, and Chris Jericho lost (barely, I'm sure) to Masahiro Chono. Those lower matches... Big Bubba Rogers against Hugh Morrus, Jeff Jarrett against M. Wall Street (Wall Street was the one in the nWo, by the way), and Buff Bagwell against Scotty Riggs.

1978 - A "supercard" is held in Miami, FL at the Orange Bowl. Isn't that one of those bowl games? Anyhow, the main event has WWF World champ Superstar Graham going to a draw with NWA World champ Harley Race. Rocky Johnson beat Killer Kox, Dusty Rhodes beat Ken Patera (he's an Olympian too!), Chavo Guerrero beat Tank Patton, and there were some other matches, too.

No hate mail on my "Wild Things" review last week! Not even any hate mail on my Wang Chung mention. Maybe I'll review another movie for you next week. Maybe even in the People's Column. You just never know. But until next week, feel free to e-mail me. Enjoy the Rumble!
