THIS WEEK IN WRESTLING HISTORY - 1.5.0 to 1.11.0

Welcome to what has the be the most inconsistant column on [slash], This Week in Wrestling History (making it's seemingly bi-weekly appearance). I'm Andy and I'm your party host for this little column.

Sorry about the lack of a column last week, Y2K hit my computer a few days early and somehow my column didn't get saved to the disk. Oh well. Actually, I don't think it was Y2K's fault but let's not let that get in the way of a good story.

It's a slow week for history, which means I should try out the new look. Right?

1.05:
1997 - Shedding the terrific "Dean Douglas" gimmick (hey, I liked it), Shane Douglas made his return to ECW.

- - - - -

1.06:
It's Jacqueline's birthday (she's Viscera's woman now).

- - - - -

1.07:
1995 - Tully Blanchard came out of retirement to wrestle ECW champ Dea... um, Shane Douglas to a sixty minute draw.

- - - - -

1.08:
Whooooa... it's Bushwhacker Luke's birthday! What was that thing called where he and Butch used to rub their noses together, Boingy or something? If anyone can remember, you are the ruler of the world (for a week at least). I remember one of those oddball Coliseum Videos where the Bushwhackers made mashed potatoes with Mean Gene and it gave one of them gas. Those were the days.

1998 - Thunder debuted on the superstation. It's been a blast ever since. Actually, does anyone remember that original ring apron that was supposed to look rockish (no, not Rockish) and the old rock entry way? On THAT VERY SHOW (I sound like Vince McMahon) Juvy won the cruiserweight belt from Ultimo Dragon in Daytona Beach.

1995 - He's a baaaaad man... Johnny B. Badd lost the WCW TV belt to Arn Anderson.

1990 - Jerry Lawler defeated King Cobra to win his 4th USWA title. He would go on to win 22 more of 'em.

- - - - -

1.09:
Apparently nothing happened on the 9th. Sorry.

This has nothing to do with wrestling history, but I must make my point. The song "Where My Girls At" by 702 is the worst song in the world (well, except "Mmmbop"). Kids across America are now speaking incorrect English... thanks, 702! Back to the regularly scheduled column.

- - - - -

1-.10:
If you aren't down with his homies, you aren't down with him... it's Grandmaster Sexay's birthday! Everybody dance! It's also Buff Bagwell's birthday... ugh. He was fun to watch until he went into catchprhase overkill... at least the Rock adds something every now and then. AND it's Jerry Estrada's birthday... is he related to Eric Estrada?

1999 - ECW holds it's "Guilty as Charged" PPV down there in Kissimmee, Florida. Taz won the ECW title by defeating Dea... Shane Douglas. Among other matches... Justin Credible won the "Stairway to Hell" match against Tommy Dreamer... RVD beat Lance Storm... The D-D-Dudleys defeated New Jack & Spike D-D-Dudley... Sid Vicious, working on his record for the millennium, pinned John Kronus.

1998 - Mike Tyson agrees with the WWF on a deal to let the guy serve as "special enforcer" for the Austin-Michaels match at WrestleMania XIV. Apparently a deal was also set to have the guy on Raw and the Royal Rumble.

1994 - On that Raw show, Marty Jannetty (the lost Rocker) and the Artist Formerly Known as the 1-2-3 Kid won the WWF tag belts from the Quebecers, who hold the record for coolest entrance song of all time. We're not the mounties...

- - - - -

1.11:
1993 - The vacant WCW U.S. belt was won by Dustin Rhodes (7even) when he defeated Ricky Steamboat. The belt was previously held by Rick Rude, who was stripped of it due to his injury.

1991 - Ric Flair won the NWA belt from Sting, which was immediately changed to the WCW belt. Therefore, Ric Flair was officially the first WCW World champ.

- - - - -

And THAT is your history for the week. E-mail is welcome (actually, I'm basically begging for e-mail at this point). And here's a blatant self plug... drop by my website below and check out the archives of all of my [slash] columns! Until next time, keep your head in the ground and your feet in the stars.
