THE FIRST *REAL* COLUMN OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Yes, that's right, folks: I am back and feeling better than ever! I apologize for the length of time that I was gone. I'm sure that I was greatly missed, if the quantity of e-mail that I received after my last column is any indication. I almost decided not to come back at all, after seeing the number of new columnists that surfaced during my sabbatical. I feared that my words of wisdom would get lost in the shuffle. But then I realized that when everyone sees the moniker "Gene Moore" appear once again on the [slash], they will know that a column of exceptional quality lies in wait, just for them.

Okay, Gene, get over yourself. You're starting to sound like a prick.

Starting?

CLEANUP FROM THE LAST COLUMN

Everyone figured out that I was referencing a Snickers commercial. Good job. But there can only be one Obsessed Fan of the Millennium, and it is... ironically enough, The Cubs Fan! Congratulations!

The Los Angeles Lakers can still bite my ass.

I got a very disturbing letter regarding my man-boobs. All I can say is, shame on you!

Okay, on to the good stuff. This time, I mean it.

THE KING IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE KING!

If the breaking news on Wrestleline is to be believed, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn, and Eddie Guerrero are ready to debut on an upcoming Raw Is War. Not only that, but they are going to debut as a team. Not only THAT, but they are going to be the team that Vince McMahon brings in to wrest control of the WWF away from Triple H and Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley-Moore (oops, did I write that?). This storyline has got so much potential, the neighbors on the floor below are complaining about potential dripping from the ceiling. Imagine, Vince is enraged at Triple H. His psyche has reached a new level of insanity (you know as well as I that he can sell that). As a result, he actually brings in four WCW wrestlers as thugs to wipe out HHH for good. I love it. The best part about it is, it doesn't need any buildup. Even the most diehard WWF fan knows about these guys, and knows how powerful they can be as a team. Just like with Chris Jericho, there will be an instant pop as soon as their names are uttered. Which means that Triple H will have no problem acting scared about their presence. It would be a tough sell otherwise. There is no question that if it happens like this, it sets up some awesome main events or semi-mains for the next few weeks and into the February PPV (and maybe even Wrestlemania).

Shhh... did you hear that? I could've sworn I heard the bloated voice of Mark Madden: "Sure, maybe they'll be brought in as main eventers, but you can bet that they'll be treading water in the mid card after a month or so, just like Jericho, Tazz, and the Big Show". Heck, I can do better than bet on it. I'll guarantee it! Something that Madden still doesn't seem to understand is that in any profession, anytime ANYONE changes companies, no matter what the assumptions are, they have to pay their dues at the new company before they can truly reap the rewards. You'd think that Madden, a real insider, would know what that means. Maybe he does know, and he's counting on us to not know. Either way, it's amazing how he tries to sell us that load of crap. Unless you're someone on the level of Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, or Steve Austin, you're going to have to prove that you can successfully adapt to your new coworkers and environment, before you're allowed to take on the big money-making tasks. I'm about to experience the same situation. In about a week, I will be starting a new job at a new company. This company may have hired me based on my accomplishments at previous companies, but that does not mean that I will be automatically thrust into their most important projects. I fully expect to start out on minor projects for at least the next six months, until I have demonstrated that I am ready to move forward from there. That's just the way it is. Tazz and the Dudley Boys may have been ECW champions, but with regards to the Big Two (which it still is, for now), that only gets you a starting spot in the mid card. Jericho paid his dues, and in less than six months he became the Intercontinental champion! Big Show paid his dues, and in less than a year he is a former World champ who is a serious main eventer! Does it sound that bad to you? For that matter, does it sound worse than what they would have gotten had they stayed in WCW? While we're on the subject of WCW, look what they've done with people who've defected. Jarrett is in the mid card, paying his dues. Russo and Ferrara decided to skip the dues paying, and as a result one was demoted, and the other is a disgraceful champion.

Sure, Benoit and the rest will be put in the mid card after a while, but it's only because they'll have some dues to pay. In the meantime, it's going to be a welcome shift from the McMahon-Helmsley era. Frankly, I'm getting sick of the McMahon-Helmsley era. Not the people involved, just the era. I still love seeing Triple H and Stephanie (especially Stephanie), but it's high time that Vinnie Mac comes back. And the 3 Revolutioners + 1 Filthy Animal are just the people to help accomplish that.

Besides, I'd kinda like to see them in the mid card for a few months or so, when all is said and done. Remember the feuds they had with Jericho in WCW? Classics that can easily be revived. And the matches that they can put together with teams like the Hardy Boyz, Edge & Christian, and the Dudleys... as I said earlier, the potential is dripping from the ceiling.

I'm Gene Moore, and I will be for a while. (Oops, that's a different column.)
