BLAH

BUCKSHOT

You know, when a truckload of big news falls in your lap, it's hard to pick just one topic to focus on, but I think I've found one to examine. That is the "dastardly" heel turn by Sting.

The way Tony Schiavone was carrying on during "Nitro" this week, you'd think Steve Borden had shot the President, handed America over to the North Koreans and given away the ending to "The Sixth Sense". Internet pundits are hailing it as a welcome change of pace for Sting. I call it a last-gasp ratings grab.

Will turning Sting evil cure all of WCW's problems? No. Will it help any of them? Maybe, maybe not. If Sting were given the opportunity to be a genuine badass, he might generate the heel heat necessary to win back some fans, even if their only objective is to see who will knock off the world champion.

Schiavone made a statement alluding to the fact that Sting's eight previous reigns had been some kind of ruse to lead up to the revelation of his "true nature". Huh? So he refused to turn his back on the fans for 13 years just to lull them into a false sense of security? That has to be one of the most asinine statements I have ever heard that tub of goo make, and that's saying a lot! Why go to all that trouble if you are truly evil? It's like capturing a secret agent, then putting him into some elaborate, yet somehow escapable, death trap, when you can just as well pop a cap in his ass.

I'm not sure putting the belt on an evil Sting will help matters either. I'm all for title stability, especially when it comes to the world title. Looking at Der Schtinger's track record with the NWA/WCW titles, however, does not fill me with confidence that he can hold on to it for an extensive period of time. His longest reign was his first NWA defense, wa-a-a-ay back in 1990. He had it for just over six months before dropping it to Ric Flair. His second longest came in 1992, taking it from his buddy Luger and dropping it to Vader after 134 days.

Since then he has had the unpleasant duty of being the bitch champion of WCW, holding the title for brief reigns only to drop it to the heel of the moment. His last one came on April 26, and it lasted 2 hours. 2 HOURS! Is this a guy to lead WCW into the next millennium?

Maybe things will be different now. Maybe Sting will find the evil within and hold onto the belt past the next pay-per-view. Unfortunately, I think he will probably drop it to Bret Hart, but not before reviving his ceiling-drop gimmick to put the fear of God into Hart. It'd be just like the bookers at WCW to pull something like that, too.
