THE FUTURE OF WCW
Yet Another Opinion

Russo and Ferrera have come, and there is a mixture of paranoid fear, cautious optimism and out-and-out joy at the prospect for the future of WCW. I am currently subscribing to the Òcautious optimismÓ school of thought.

After all, the main reason I watch WCW is because they put on the show I want to see, lots of wrestling. The last few weeks have been excellent by my standards, good long matches with the guys involved having enough talent and stamina to keep the match exciting and action packed. I can see why many are fearful of the hiring of the two men who are responsible for how the WWF looks now. Three minute matches, numerous interviews and videos, lots of T&A. I personally don't always like the WWF product all that much, and I know I'm not the only one.

Look at the difference in the rosters between the two organisations. The WWF has some guys who can talk great on the mic and can just about put on a decent match in the ring. The only wrestlers who are genuinely very talented and can put on a long and varied match are Edge, Christian, Jericho and The Hardys. In the WCW, the emphasis is very different. I believe the reason we see longer matches in WCW is that there are so many wrestlers on the roster who are capable of doing them. Men like Benoit, Hart, Malenko, Juvi, Saturn, Mysterio, the Guerreos, Kanyon, even DDP is capable of a good work rate whether you like him or not. Sting has still got it when it comes to wrestling and Goldberg is getting better.

I am cautious because though I think Russo could help get the story lines coherent and interesting, I fear he is going to take our long matches away from us. Short matches worked in the WWF because it allowed the emphasis to be taken off the lack of ability of many of their talent. But the reason the WCW's main strength is that it is still a wrestling organisation. Russo says he likes guys like Benoit and Disco Inferno. If this is the case, he must let them show that they are good wrestlers. I don't want thirty minutes of wrestling and over an hour of interviews and video segments, that's why I watch Nitro. I know that Russo and Ferrera (and others from WWF also it would seem) have been brought in to boost the ratings which have flagged badly this year, but I hope that there is enough sense in the booking to allow the wrestlers to play to their strengths - specifically their ability to put on great wrestling matches.

It has to be understood that it isn't the length of the matches that is causing the problems, its that the fans don't give a shit about the wrestlers, there is too much apathy. If stories can be written that will make the fans care about why the guys are wrestling, a lot of problems will be solved.

Also, I have no idea whether it is a work or not, but I request that everyone should pray to whatever they believe in that Hogan really is going to fuck off. Thank you.
