MURMURINGS

Hello all! I apologize for not writing a column last week, but the programs left me uninspired and not in the mood for discussing wrestling. Luckily this week's Raw left me with some things to discuss.

First, Tori's splash through a table on Buh-Buh Ray Dudley. Great move, even if she did flub up the first time. Now, I'm very much aware of Tori's background as a former bodybuilder and as a wrestler, and I have the utmost respect for her, but there are two things that really annoy me: (1) The character of Tori is weak, with little to no personality; and (2) Hard as she may try, she is NOT DX material. I don't mind DX having a woman by their side, but Tori just doesn't have the right attitude to fit in with X-Pac and Road Dogg. She is also horribly misplaced with the McMahon/Helmsley Regime, in which EVERYONE is a thousand times more over than she is. I suppose the WWF bookers and her fellow DX/Regime members have no problems accepting her as "one of them," but it's not cutting it with me. Probably the fact that she has almost no personality hurts her credibility within DX - maybe if she was allowed to talk and develop her character, and PROVE that she belongs with DX, I could more readily accept her.

Stephanie McMahon deserves some credit for her match against Lita - she's not a trained wrestler, but she did take a few good bumps. But I stand by my belief that non-wrestlers should not be holding titles. Ivory, Tori, Lita and Jackie deserve the Women's title much, much more than Stephanie does, yet the WWF continues to make that title a joke by allowing Stephanie to continue to hold the belt and having her rarely defend it. Yes, she defended it against Lita on both last week's SmackDown and Raw, but Steph only won the first match with help from Tori, while Kurt Angle interfered in the match on Raw. The WWF could have a great Women's division if they took both their female wrestlers and the belt seriously, and kept the title away from non-wrestlers like Steph, The Kat and Terri. But if the WWF only sees the Women's title as an object to get Stephanie more over as a heel, or a prize for whichever woman has the biggest breasts at any given moment, they should do away with it.

More on Stephanie and Kurt... Looks like the rumored Kurt/Steph/HHH angle, in which Stephanie would leave HHH for Kurt, is beginning to get underway. A Stephanie/Kurt pairing would mean the end of the McMahon/Helmsley Era, which is fine with me, since it's been dragging on too long. I've also read that HHH may turn face after Stephanie leaves him for Kurt, and I hope that's true, because I'm tired of HHH's heel persona. I like HHH much better as a face, and I hope that if/when he turns, the rest of DX will turn with him.

I am happy that X-Pac advanced into the second round of the King of the Ring tournament, but I have to admit that his match against Dean Malenko wasn't one of his better ones. Because the announcers made a big deal about his defeating Malenko with help from the interference of Tori and the Road Dogg, maybe he was supposed to look as if he was the weaker of the two competitors, or maybe he was just having an off night, but X-Pac has definitely had better matches. Since it's rumored that DX will be facing the Dudleyz at the PPV, I don't look for X-Pac to advance any farther into the tournament, unfortunately. Actually, X-Pac should have won the King of the Ring prize last year, because in my view he was much more over and more deserving of the honor than the man who won it, Billy Gunn. My pick to win this year: Kurt Angle.

But it was nice to see X-Pac wrestle a singles match, and I'm glad he'll have another one within the next week-and-a-half. I have nothing against the Road Dogg, but I'm not terribly into the DX tag team; Road Dogg has more chemistry with Billy Gunn than he does with X-Pac, and the DX gimmic is boring now. I think both men should be wrestling as singles, and possibly pursuing titles.

The King of the Ring main event, with HHH, Vince and Shane McMahon against The Rock, The Undertaker and Kane sounds appealing, but I liked the idea of a four-way for the WWF title better. HHH has held the title for most of the year, and it's time for someone else to have a long title reign, but the belt probably won't be on the line in this main event.

A few thoughts about WCW: I'm looking forward to a possible reformation of the Triple Threat, and I'm enjoying the David Flair/Daffney/Miss Hancock/Crowbar angle so far. Goldberg's heel turn was nowhere near as climatic a surprise as WCW would have hoped; I'm not a Goldberg fan, so I quite honestly don't care for him one way (face) or the other (heel). I'm sorry to hear Kim Page is leaving WCW, but I have to admit I won't miss her on-screen character, as I found her dull and annoying.

I'll close this with a comment about ECW: Whoever came up with "The Clap" needs to be dragged out into the street and shot! Can you say "lame?"

Take care and be good to each other.
