MURMURINGS

Greetings, folks! I will share some of my notes from the Monday night programs near the end of the column, but this week I want to discuss the group known as D-Generation X. If you've read the current Ross Report at WWF.com, I'm sure you saw good ol' J.R.'s comments about DX, the Hardys, Edge/Christian and Too Cool. I know there are many who would disagree with Mr. Ross, but I'd like to defend the DX boys.

I'll start by taking a look at the two DX members known as X-Pac and the Road Dogg. The Dogg is one of the WWF's most entertaining personalities. He's not one of the best wrestlers in the world, but he has charisma and great mike skills - two important qualities for a wrestler to have, and two reasons why Road Dogg is loved by a lot of WWF fans.

There are many 'Net fans who are currently upset with X-Pac, for whatever reason, but one can't deny that he is one of the best performers in the business. He's had to alter his style because of the neck injuries he's suffered over the years, but he still puts on good, entertaining matches. He may not have as much charisma nor as good mike skills as the Dogg, but X-Pac does know how to play whatever role he's portraying (face or heel) very well.

Road Dogg and X-Pac are a decent pair as far as the WWF's tag-team scene goes, but as much as it pains me to say it, I will - they're boring. Road Dogg and X-Pac have chemistry, but Road Dogg has more chemistry with Billy Gunn, and that is probably a major reason why the "new" NAO are dull. Since they've been a team, the DX boys have, for the most part, been putting over other wrestlers/teams - first Kane and Rikishi, then Edge and Christian, and you can bet when their feud with the Dudleys is over, the masters of the 3-D will come out on top as well. I'm not saying that's totally a bad thing, or that those folks don't deserve pushes, but it *does* make DX look weak, and that's not a good thing for them. And when you think about it, DX is kind of on the backburner right now. Yes, they do have their feud with the Dudleys, but it's not been as hyped as other feuds have, and the focus of the feud isn't the DX boys vs. the Dudleyz, but whether or not DX's valet Tori will ever go through a table. You can also factor in the fact that X-Pac and Road Dogg spend a LOT of time simply being henchmen for HHH and the McMahons, beating down The Rock, and now The Undertaker, on demand.

Now, let's examine the three teams Ross calls "the best in the business." The Hardys are certainly talented; in fact, I would have to say they're the best team in the WWF right now. But they need to develop stronger personalities and mike skills. Edge and Christian have charisma and ability, and are certainly on their way to becoming "Superstars," but they've still got a ways to go before they reach the upper echelon. Too Cool? They're okay wrestlers, they're insanely over with fans, and they're the new tag team champs, but like the Hardys, they need to improve their mike skills.

I think what J.R. meant by his comments is that these teams are not on the level X-Pac and Road Dogg are. 'Pac and Dogg have been in the business for a long time, have paid their dues, and have proven their talents and abilities. They are definitely two of the biggest stars in wrestling today, backburner or no backburner. The Hardys, Too Cool and Edge/Christian are definitely getting there, but they're just not on DX's level yet. They're still climbing the ladder. They are stars, yes, but X-Pac and Road Dogg are currently considered to be bigger stars.

DX may be in a lull these days, but the members definitely deserve better - and I pray Vince and the WWF powers-that-be realize that soon. X-Pac was booked to win the IC title last year, but those plans were probably laid aside because of the arrivals of Chris Jericho and the Radicals, Billy Gunn's injury, and the fact that the McMahon/Helmsley angle has had to continue longer than it was planned to, among other things. I hope things will improve for the DX boys soon, and they'll get the pushes they so very much deserve.

As promised, a few comments about Raw and Nitro:

Too Cool as the new WWF tag-team champs? I suppose I can live with it...

Kane returning to fight off the Regime wasn't a surprise, but I hope he concentrates on winning the WWF title and doesn't start another boring feud with X-Pac. The first one lasted entirely too long and grew boring.

Rey Jr. now has a "girlfriend?" When and how did this happen?! And what was the point of David Flair rescuing Miss Hancock? I know they're sweethearts in real life, but in the current WCW storylines Flair is "engaged" to Daffney. I've been watching WCW regularly lately, so I couldn't have missed anything...

I'm sorry, Kimberly fans, but I'm not into her character at all! Her little vignettes are horrible, and she's awful on the mike!

Some folks just don't get it... You do NOT throw trash into the ring just because you don't like the way a match or a show itself ended! That's just a sign of total disrespect for the wrestlers, and it shows no class.

Until next time, take care and be good to one another.
