Pence, pounds, SHILLings...

Mark Madden's latest column is about the WWF's latest major move: Ventura at Summerslam. Bob Ryder's latest column is about the WWF's latest major move: Ventura at Summerslam. Both men point out the things they find wrong with this matter. I find this strange, since they work for WCW. Not just that they are assaulting the competition, but seeing as WCW has enough situations to point out the bad in, these men might earn their paychecks if they wrote about those. But they're independent. They just happen to get paid by WCW. WCW didn't buy their opinions. However, every non pro-WCW person on the Internet has already given Bob and Mark enough shit to fill the NYC sewer system over their ties to WCW (money) getting in the way of objective opinions, so I'll avoid ranting on that.

My point is the Ventura at Summerslam issue.

First, Mark Madden summed it up thusly: "Working SummerSlam doesn't make Jesse a bad governor. It just means he made a bad decision."

Huh? He's going to take part in something on his own time, not the state's time, that he did in the past. Something that his constituents obviously didn't care enough about to elect him. He's gonna referee a match at Summerslam. He used to be a wrestler, and he's going to make a return to the ring. In a slightly altered form, but he's returning. And this is a bad decision?

What if the Navy Seals were going to have an exhibition, something similar to the Ironman triathalon, that shows off the physical abilites of the Seals, just something to do for fun, and they invited Jesse. If he accepted and took part, would that be a bad decision? If he could do it completely on his own time, if it's not anything illegal, just something for fun, then where lies the problem?

Maybe it's the money? No one knows for sure what Jesse's getting. We do know that $100,000 is going to be divided between two charities. Everyone assumes that he's going to receive in upwards of one million dollars for the appearance, leaving him around $900,000 in payment. So it's the money, right?

Bob Ryder puts it this way: "The people of the state of Minnesota should be outraged that their Governor is using their highest office to line his pockets."

Exactly. Minnesotans should be completely and totally pissed off that Ventura is publicly accepting money for his participation in a COMPLETELY LEGAL FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. I know I'd be pissed if MY governor announced that he's going to make money off of a wrestling appearance, especially if the next day it was announced that, as a result of the Governor's pressuring the state to do so, the state government is going to make 1.5 BILLION dollars in tax rebates due to a large financial surplus. Man. I can't believe they're letting Ventura hose them like that. Christ.

So if it's not really a bad decision, as Madden says, and money isn't a truly viable reason to bash Ventura's appearance, then what is it?

Oh yeah, I remember. He's doing it for the WWF. The competition.
