THE RENEWAL OF THE MONDAY NIGHT WARS - 10/19/99

I sat on my couch, almost quivering with anticipation. For the first time in over a year it seemed that the Monday night wars might be interesting, as opposed to just sad.

For those of you that are unaware as to the reasons for my hope allow me to explain. Just over a month ago the powers that be within the WCW decided that it was time to relieve Mr. Eric Bischoff of his official duties within World Championship Wrestling. Due to the massive amounts of money that Uncle Eric was spending and the continuing downward spiral of the WCW's ratings, the powers that be down in Turnerland felt this was a good decision. And the fans seemed to concur. The installment of financial expert Bill Busch into the helm position of the lagging WCW franchise seemed a good omen. People waited and the show, while not remaking itself overnight, appeared to show signs of life for the first time in months.

Those of us that had tried so hard over the last year to find something, anything about the WCW to hold up as a sample of how great the promotion used to be, were in for the surprise of our lives. It was announced that Vince Russo and his partner Ed Ferrara were leaving the World Wrestling Federation and taking over the all of the creative duties at the WCW. In it's own way in was a defection that made all others in the history of the Monday Night Wars seem insignificant in comparison. Even those who professed themselves to be the most ardent anti-WCW fans stood up and took notice.

The die was cast.

So I sat on my couch and watched both of the fares that were put on the air for my viewing pleasure by the "Big Two", and do you know what? I was the single best night of wrestling that I have seen in well over a year, in a nutshell, it made me happy.

I'm not going to do anything resembling a recap of the shows, there are many writers out there that do a much better job of recapping every week then I could ever hope to do. Therefore I will leave that unenviable task to them. Instead I am going to run down what I liked and did not like about each show on a point by point basis.

Ready? OK here we go, in no particular order.

WCW Monday Nitro:
+ The opening of the show seemed much more stream lined, and well organized.
+ All of the matches seemed to have a purpose and there did not seem to be a ton of filler material throughout the show.
+ I really, really like Lash Leroux and I am glad that it appears the WCW is going to showcase the talented young man.
+ I was very pleasantly surprised at the degree of exposure/push that the Filthy Animals seem to be getting. Eddie deserves all the push he can get.
+ I know I may be in the minority, but Hall and Nash doped up on cold medicine and stalking Goldberg was the funniest damn thing I saw on TV last night. "Hello, we are looking for senor Goldberg." LOL!
+ I was really entertained by Shane Douglas and Lash Leroux doing color commentary.
+ The Sting Vs. Brett Hart match was very good. Brett will have the Belt before the end of the year
+ I got to see that little SOB David Flair get his ass kicked not once but twice. Oh Joy!
+ Torrie Wilson, Kimberly the slut, and Mona. Yummy!
+ Was it me or did Bobby Henan seem a little like his old self?
+ Jeff Jarret, I will like JJ anywhere that he is, and he nailed Buff with the guitar. Funny shit.
+ No Hogan, the way that I look at it is if Hogan refuses to do the JOB for the younger guys and play elder statesman then keep his ass off of TV.
+ Bill Goldberg was finally in the main event as a legit contender, you have to go with your strengths, and Goldberg is one of WCW's biggest strengths. Even if it was almost a WCW screw job ending.
- Kill Tony "I'm an F'N moron" Schivonie. I hate that man worse then Michael Cole. For the love of god man learn some self control.
- Stop telling everyone how much better things are going to be now that the miracle men Russo/Ferrara are here.
- Where the hell was the Cat? I love Ernest Miller. "Somebody better call my mamma!"
- If I never see Sid "I'm a big Jerkoff" Eudy again, it will be to soon.
- Get Buff Bagwell and Lex Luger off of the Damn TV, I have never found them amusing.
- What the hell is wrong with Rick Stiener? He looks and acts like a damn Jackass these days.
- A three Hour show, I've read where they want to make Nitro 2 hours. I hereby command that they do just that.
- Where the hell was Chris Benoit? (yes I know Japan)

WWF RAW is WAR:
+ Triple H has become my favorite heel in the business, I'm extremely pleased that he retained the belt Sunday night. I'm surprised and heartened that SCSA did the JOB. Way to go Steve!
+ Vince has been in rare form since he returned to TV.
+ Triple threat title match at Survivors Series WOOO HOOO!
+ I'm not going to apologize to anyone about the fact that I like Ray Traylor, he kinda reminds me of my dad, but he is becoming a magnificent heel and Hardcore champ.
+ I love Chyna, and peeing my pants that she has the IC title.
+ Miss Kitty as Mini-Chyna, OH MY GOD! I think I'm in love with the both of them. Please, oh please Vince don't drop this gimmick for a long long time.
+ Mick Foley ripping the Rock a new asshole. I've been saying for a month that this was going to happen.
+ I smell Cactus Jack coming back!
+ Test Vs. The British Bulldog, I liked it.
+ Al Snow Vs. Val Venis, this match was a hidden gem that I will enjoy watching many times in the future.
+ Kane. His new costume (since KOTR) rocks.
+ The Holy's have the Tag Team belts, Crash and Hardcore are great.
+ The King and JR are the best announce team in the biz.
+ Jerichos new feud with Chyna.
+ Finkle the "Poker Bitch".
+ The Hardyz and Edge/Christian.
+ The Godfathers Ho's.

+/- The Big Show, I really like Paul White, I only pray that this angle gets good treatment and that it is played out right.
- People MIA: The Taker (injured), Stevie Richards(?), The Blue Meanie(?), Taka Michinoko(?), Kaientai(?).
- Where is Debra, where are the puppies?
- where are Shane and Stephanie, something about her makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

As it is plain to see Raw was by far a superior show when compared to Nitro, but if you take them separately Nitro was a wonderful show.

That About wraps thing up for this week. I can honestly say that I am salivating with anticipation over next weeks round of the continuing war between the WWF and WCW. But I will be honest, I don't think that Thursday will be nearly as close, I don't believe that Thunder can be saved.

Thanx,
