AS IF YOU CARE

In the last two days, I watched three different wrestling shows: Thunder, Smackdown, and ECW on TNN, just as much of you probably did as well.

Okay, maybe not Thunder quite so much, but you know how it is. i was comparison shopping. But since I got such a rousing response for my last column (Ha!), I figured I'd do a little more.

As for Smackdown, I thought it was pretty darn good for the WWF. Had some matches, had some speaking, had some walking, had some cleavage (ALWAYS welcome)... but, other than Foley's parody of the Rock's speech and everything Jericho did, I just thought it was basically the same thing that they always do. HBK's turn made it a bit more interesting than usual for me, but it was predictable, in that I READ THE NEWSBOARDS. But, all in all, a good show, except for me switching channels constantly.

And, I have to say this: The Test/Stephanie McMahon soap opera was one of the best moments I found to switch channels. I understand that they're going for that coveted young female demograohic with it, but... I didn't want to see that. I'm happy for the young couple, I really am, and I wish them well for the next few months that they'll be together... let's get it off TV, though, please?

One more thing before I move on, and that's Hansen's Energy Drink. It's nasty, for one. For another, it's like seeing a record turning on a turntable that says "Surge" on it.

Now, Thunder, on the other hand... it was Thunder. Exactly what I've come to expect from Thunder over the last few weeks, exactly what everyone has come to expect from Thunder nowadays. In a word, it was trash. Completely. From Sid squashing the Public Enemy to... hold it, let's stop here. Sid Vicious is REALLY getting on my nerves. Why does WCW have to put him in handicap matches versus tag teams? As if they've not already buried the tag division enough, now they're making sure none of them can be seen as threats to win the title by having all of them get squashed by the most annoying interruption in the company. As if it wasn't already bad enough having Sid come out to ruin all the good matches on all their shows... as if he wasn't already incredibly annoyingly rambling like the WARRIOR he is on the mic... In case you're wondering, I've lost no love for Sid, because I never really had it to begin with. I think it may have something to do with a pair of scissors, but I can't be positive, because he's a FUCKING PRICK!

I don't think I'm being too harsh, do you?

The rest of the show was pretty fucked up as well, except for the Philthy Aminals taking on the Rednecks, and even THEN, I had a sour taste in my mouth.

And don't even get me STARTED on Steiner, that Chucky-talking moron.

The ECW show, however, was like a breath of fresh air. I think it has a lot to do with having some new blood injected into the mix, 'cause I hadn't actually been exposed to the ECW product before. but it ALSO has a LOT to do with the fact that they freakin' opened with RVD taking on Jerry Lynn in basically a half-hour match (so there were commercials, replays, and video clips scattered throughout... as a WCW fan, I've gotten used to that.) Spotfest from hell! I'm a big fan of spotfests. That over-the-top-rope-sunset-flip-to-powerbomb-through-the-table thingy was pretty damn sweet from my point of view.

Taz came across to me as fairly cool, but I couldn't help but think of Bigelow. Tell me why I'm wrong here, I want to know. It's just a first impression.

And I really, REALLY want to see Sabu in the ring. Badly. I might be jumping on a bandwagon here, but if anybody deserves it, it's ECW. They're the alternative that WRESTLING fans are waiting for. Not SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT fans, though they have enough of that for a small army too, but fans of pure wrestling are going to be CREAMING THEIR PANTS at this. I'm talking, of course, of disgruntled WCW fans who NEED something to mark out for again. Like me.

Finally, since I have to keep myself down to short things, I'm going to touch on something I mentioned earlier... newsboards. I read a couple newsboards, and sometimes I'll read a whole bunch of them, and I just HAVE to say something about this. One, the "news" that gets posted on there, once all is said and done, is just the same stuff, over and over again. tuesday, it's news. Wednesday, it's news reworded, Thursday... you get the idea. Two, it's wrong over half the time. But that doesn't stop it from getting posted, oh no.

A proper journalist will check facts before breaking it to the public. It's basic journalistic ethics to make sure everything's on the up and up and only using verifiable facts... but I'm nitpicking. Fuck it.

Three... posting something even though you can plainly see that somebody else has posted it, on the same site. I won't name any names, but, why would you post Jericho's commentary for the week if somebody else already did it? Is it a popularity thing? Is it just petty competition? That's why the reporters aren't taken too seriously, because they take THEMSELVES so seriously. Y'all chill out, guys.

I'm out, everybody. Like it or not, this is how I feel. I'll try to get to Hogan next time, huh?
