FALL BRAWL THOUGHTS

I had a lot of time on my hands at this time, so I decided to give it a try with writing. Thanks for giving some sort of forum. I enjoy your columns in Wrestleline, but rather than sound like a kiss ass, I'll just say that it really is good to hear that there are people who love to write about wrestling, as it makes for some actual thinking to come out...Keep up the good work, and here are my Fall Brawl Thoughts.... for 9.12.99.

On Friday before ECW on TNN was to start, I decided to look at a Fall Brawl tape I had, inspired by the retro rants of Scott Keith at Wrestleline. The one in question was Fall Brawl 97, and I liked it. Its weird though, because I initially liked it for the Horsemen storyline, as well as rooted for the Steiners to beat Harlem Heat....

Looking at it present time I found to have enjoyed both the Jericho/Guerrerro match and the Ultimo Dragon/Alex Wright. Seeing Alex Wright was a guilty pleasure as his dance routine actually predated Ricky Martin's no rhythm moves by two years!!

Seeing that I actually watched this pay per view, I feel that I have to give my two pennies worth, although I honestly would be just as good as McMahon in commentating play by play..."What a Maneuver!"....

Kidman, Rey Mysterio, and Eddie Guerrero vs ICP and Vampiro-
I would say that this is an okay match although it did cause my Pops to actually stop to see Kidman's Shooting Star Press before he went to the can. I guess I "thought" that ICP would be capable of doing a good match, but being the self proclaimed most hated music act doesnt equate to being the most hated in the ring. I only want to see "celebrities" beaten the crap out of in matches, and yet, I couldn't care if they did get pinned for this one. Maybe I was hoping for the Filthy Animals to bring Chris Rock out with them, so that he could lambast the clowns into submission, like he did to some acts like NSync and the Backstreet Boys at the MTV awards.

Lenny Lane vs Kaz Hayashi (Cruiserweight)-
I think the only match I wanted to see was this one, mainly to see what new flourish Lenny will bring out of his gay bag of tricks. Of course he brings in to the match his skipover crossover, his armgrab that always seems to have the camera at a different angle so you can't see the reference, and of course his jumping into the arms of his companion Lodi. I think he adds his pinning mannerisms in this match, as well as the missing elbowdrops in triplicate that he did in this past week's Thunder. Some other impressive moves like his Doctor Bomb and his frontface Full Nelson Legsweep (I don't know moves) do the trick for me despite Lenny's flubs with Kaz's spots. A little bit longer than it should be, I still think it was a good match. The signs by Lodi could use some work though, unless they are trying to push their name as the West Hollywood Blondes as their tag team name.

Shane Douglas and Dean Malenko vs Hugh Morrus and Nastyboy Knobs
- Was this really a no DQ match? I groaned, for I saw that Saturn/Morrus match and Nitro, and I wondered if it was just me or was Hugh Morrus just not cutting it? His beard treatment looks stupid, his gear doesn't seem to match either, and the thoughts of Vader came into mind, well the Vader in the WWF 98 season that is. The thing is, Vader appears to be much older, and yet has improved, while Hugh Morrus hasn't. This guy definitely needs some weight loss or something, because I could care less if he pins Malenko with his moonsault. Watching a whole match for that one impressive move gets tired, and it was that way already in 97. I think Knobbs should stay in the indy circuit, unless he can actually evolve his character. Not much to remark on the Revolution, but when Saturn guaranteed a clean sweep for the group, it looks like it will be, but in the loss section. *sigh*Hopefully the next roster of cuts include all of the First Family.

Perry Saturn vs Rick Steiner-
Not much to say, I didn't expect it to be good, and it wasn't. Steiner with an ugly bulldog.

Berlyn vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan-
Why did it have to be a storyline that Buff no showed? I was surprised that the chant "Bullshit" wasn't started. Since Duggan hasn't been on Nitro since springtime after his surgery, I assumed it was going to be a Saturday Night Squash. I guess I was right, although it didn't seem that the two were clicking. I guess Berlyn's wrestling redebut became anticlimactic. At least you can say that his Alex Wright Persona was different... Berlyn didn't use a German Suplex for his finisher. I guess his bodyguard will do all that for him instead.Buff o course arrives too late, and is cut off by a video recap before he tries to explain himself out of this. Let the Buff Hate campaign begin.

Harlem Heat vs the West Texas Rednecks-
I like the West Texas Rednecks. The thing is, it would have been great if Vincent came by too.Hennig as a stooge doesn't qualify, and if he is going to be a manager from now on, he should try to talk more. I was really hoping that Barry Wyndham's involvement in the nWa angle in the WWF would fluorish, as I was intrigued by the idea that an "invasion" of wrestling's fading stars in the WWF may actually work. Maybe the New Midnight Express killed it, I dunno, but I liked that "Tradition Rules". Here in the WCW, Barry seems just as motivated, but I think his association with brother Kendall doesn't help. It's like Sylvester, with , you guessed it, Frank Stallone. On the Harlem Heat side, I see that the talented one is the one in peril, while Stevie Ray tries to play hero. They of course become nine time champions. I'm surprised that when people talk of company men, they talk of DDP, and Sting, but seem to fail to mention Harlem Heat in that mix. It's a conspiracy I tell you!

Chris Benoit vs. Sid (US title)
I could care less if Sid won this match, because he probably will. Chris Benoit was able to make this match, well, actually, good. The one thing I was wondering was why would Chris attack the knees, when he should be going after the arms for his finisher. Besides, those steel stepshots didn't seem to faze Sid at all. I also was wondering if Sid was tapping in the crossface because Chris was actually hurting Sid, or because he plumb forgot that that was his finisher. After a missed headbitt, Sid wins with a powerbomb. Nash lives, at least in spirit, in Sid Vicious. I know he's alive, but I digress.

Goldberg vs DDP-
I believe that the reason DDP may not be popular in the internet is not over his involvement with other talent, or his schmoozing with Bischoff and celebrities, I believe it's because he really, really, really, just doesn't cut it as a bad guy. Memorable heels have great public speaking skills, and yo mama jokes are actually done better by grade schoolers than by this guy. His DDP elbow really is a bad parody of the Rock's, and honestly his style really works better as the good guy beaten to a pulp. Make him good, please! Goldberg wins with a jackhammer, and it looks like he's bleeding from a dish smashed on him earlier by the triad. This not-hurt-by-anything schtick is back again. After about eight months after his first defeat, Goldberg is still treated as the same unstoppable force that he was. Talk about character development. I don't think he has a loss except for the one at Starrcade. Next thing you know, Hogan and the nWo are back. Oh the Horror!

Main Event
Hulk Hogan vs Sting
-
I'm very surprised for this match. I don't consider him very talented, and I still don't know why he was so popular in the eighties. I guess being a young impressionable kid, he was the hero. But at that time, I thought that he was overrated. And as I grew older and more cynical,I still see that Hulk continues to be the same Glory Hog that he ever was.

I remember before Wrestlemania III, I saw the interview with Andre the Giant being awarded for a trophy that I don't remember. Hogan comes in to congratulate Andre, while rubbing it in that Hulk's still in some way better than him. So Andre storms away. This is where my anti Hulk Hogan fervor began. I realized as a child that Hulk naturally has to be The spotlight, even at the expense of his friends. So of course I was cheering for Andre in Wrestlemania III, although somehow, I did like that Hogan won. How fickle I was.

Flashback, I see that Hogan refers to Sting as "My Buddy Sting, who I would never stab in the back". Noticed that it refers to Hogan before it does Sting? Restholds begin the match a plenty, although for some reason there seems to be a psychology in it. At one point they do the test of strength, and my prediction on who will be heel was all based on this move. Who will kick to the gut? Hogan. Hah, thought so, back and forth, Hogan actually does some sort of suplex (I told you I suck at moves), though I wonder how his knee is doing....It eventually leads to a stinger splash or two, but the third fails for Sting. Hogan is doing a lot of "Hollywood" cheat to win tactics. Of course Tony as usual, says that he's doing it because its for the championship. The crowd and I don't buy it, as every Sting triumph is cheered louder than Hogan's. It all ends with a legdrop on Sting, but wait, DDP comes in with a diamond cutter on Hogan to give Sting the win. Probably to frame Sting... but wait, Bret Hart comes in to take care of DDP. Since Goldberg's done with DDP, guess which is the next feud for DDP? Sid comes over, Hulk Hogan vanquishes him, and Luger as well, who conveniently leaves a bat for Sting to hold. Hogan acts like a wuss and waves his hitting of Luger as a "wasn't me" thing, but Sting doesn't buy it, and jabs him with the bat. Weird, as I cheered, and the crowd cheered. With a scorpion deathlock, Sting is champion! Weird as the people are happy he wins, yet Tony still persists that Sting is evil. Tony really should get off the mike. If he was smart, he would have said something about the fans being happy at the way Sting won, and propose that this was payback from the time in the nWo when Sting was betrayed by Hogan. There were better ways to end the commentary. What it ended up doing was justify that Hogan is still going to force his good guy persona in our throats for at least another month or so, and WCW gave a big F you to the crowd that watched this wretched show.

Come to think of it, if Andre was still alive, in today's wrestling world, Andre would have won his match with Hogan, and probably get the same reaction. Anything that makes Hogan look bad gets props from me. Maybe he will be the next one cut in lieu of this post-Bischoff era.

I'm hoping that this all leads to a Bret Hart vs Chris Benoit Heavyweight title match in Starrcade, as I think that that will signify any real positive change to come for WCW. For that to happen, One of the two has to get the belt. I'm looking at it for Hogan to get the belt back, so that Hart's supposed Halloween Havoc Match will occur. and from there, who knows? The only way the Revolution will prove their worth is for one of them to get the big one.

Don't know how that paragraph fit into my whole work...Thanks for bearing with my ramblings and such, but I guess I just happened to have a lot of time on my hands.
