OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Let's see now . . .

I've been working 7 days for the past 5 weeks solid . . .

I have this weekend off and today is Sweetest Day, I hope my wife will recognize me . . .

What should I do now . . .

I guess I could write a wrestling column or something . . .

Boy, that Chris Jericho. I've read a lot of opinions lately about how he doesn't seem as good now that he's with the WWF. There's a reason for that.

Have you ever noticed that in a painting, there has to be a lot of darkness in order to make something else look very bright? If everything is all white and yellow then nothing really stands out. But if there are a lot of black and dark brown areas, then the sun on the horizon can really scream out. Contrast.

In WCW, there is a tremendous lack of personality. Almost everyone is boring on the mic. From Malenko to Luger, the Sominex people have something to seriously worry about.

Jericho was the best mic worker in WCW. He was arguably the only original talent personality-wise. Flair, Hogan, and Savage are just about it in WCW where the mic is concerned and I personally cannot stomach any of those three. But Jericho was something very special while he was at WCW because of the extreme contrast between himself and everyone else. He was a little bit of the colorful RAW in the black and white Nitro universe.

Now that Y2J is in the WWF, he is just another strong personality, and certainly no longer the best. Austin and the Rock are supreme mic workers that Jericho will have great difficulty in topping. The big fish from the little pond has stepped into the land of the giants.

A few other random thoughts . . .

I don't think I'm the only one that is confused by the Big Show's father having terminal cancer. I thought his dad was Andre the Giant, and he's been pushing up daisies for a while now (may he rest in peace). What gives?

I remember watching wrestling on TV in the late 60's as a young kid. Everything was about the house show coming up. The TV matches were ALWAYS a star against someone you never saw before. The idea was to make all the headliners look unbeatable by having them trash some nobody. And there was one champion for a solid 15 years. When I hear about Flair being 14-time Champ I just have to laugh; couldn't he hold it for any length of time?

What's the difference between a smart and a mark? A mark is part of the herd mentality that likes whatever is popular and is being over-hyped. A smart is part of the herd mentality that likes whatever is ignored but seems to have some potential. Either way, how are you being an individual, by getting your tongue pierced like everyone else you know?

I can't wait for Monday 10/25/99. That's the first Nitro with Russo & Ferrara or whatever their names are. They've come up with some truly awful things on RAW, and a few gems as well. What can you do with a bunch of wrestler's that have no personality? WCW is ripe for mouthpieces to do the talking for their wrestlers.

I was raised on the NWA. Way before there was a WCW, like I mentioned earlier in the late 60's there was a federation of independents that circulated talent throughout much of the country. I was never aware of that aspect of it, but I do remember a lot of how things were done and how they affected me as a fan. Let's save that for next week.
