BLAH

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
Unforgiven. Am I gonna pay for it and watch it? Not on your life! If it was $4.99, I'd be first in line but for 25-30 bucks, or whatever it is these days, no way.

I have lots of experience watching WWF and WCW PPVs. A friend of mine at work used to tape them through his little black box and bring them to work and we all watched them for free. There was something, that at least in our opinions, became obvious after about a year of this. The free TV shows on Monday nights are almost always MUCH better than the PPVs, regardless of the cost.

Yes there are rare exceptions, Hell in a Cell with Michaels v Undertaker being a superb match.

But what is better on the PPV? The cool interviews and other antics are more or less non-existent. I mean, if you don't like the bullshit then why do you watch? I mean, the interplay between The Rock and Mankind on the mic lately has been incredibly funny!

You get longer matches on PPVs. Yeah, right. There is a formula, especially in WCW, where most of every match has both wrestlers on their backs gasping for air while the referee counts toward ten. Now that's entertainment. Is that supposed to be dramatic? I call it a lack of aerobic conditioning. I call it boring.

Steve Austin for 90 seconds on RAW delivering a flurry of clothes-lines and stunners is compelling excitement, but watching him slog through a 20-minute match throwing punches more feeble than my 70-year-old mother could throw is simply not my preference.

The strange thing with the WWF is you are most likely to get some kind of screw job with the big championship match on the PPV, but the next night on RAW you get a decisive victory and title change for free. I'd be pissed if I had paid 25 bucks for the PPV. As a free TV fan, I love it. I'm sure they make plenty just from the regular TV shows and I wish they could be satisfied with only that.

Next week, I'll be explaining why I think Nitro has gotten much better lately, and it has nothing to do with Bischoff getting fired or Hogan or anything like that. See ya then.
