OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

This article is shareware. If you decide to download it and read it everyday, then you must send me lots and lots of money. . .

On the recent Emmy awards, I saw The Rock and Austin introduce a group of writers. They had to tone down their usual schticks, and because of that it kinda sucked, but there were revelations nonetheless.

Wrestling is big right now. Bigger than the "Hogan Era" of the eighties. Back then it was only Hogan who "transcended" wrestling. Today, we have multiple wrestlers appearing in a great variety of venues, from comercials to award shows to movies to talk shows to TV shows. Wrestling is big right now. Huge.

But there was something else. None of the actors did any acting. Think about that for a second.

On the late night talk shows, when a singer comes out they frequently sing. Musicians will frequently play (notice how I did NOT confuse singers with musicians). Comedians will come out and tell a few jokes. Sometimes sports stars will come out, especially on Letterman, and hit golf balls, throw footballs into garbage cans, shoot baskets, etc. Wrestlers will talk their talk and walk their walk, often getting into a brawl like on the Tonight Show. But when actors come out they never act, or even do a bit of their current TV-show character for the audience.

Wrestlers are most able to do what they do spontaneously at any given time. They can cut two or three hours of programming live in one take with frequent improv. Actors take 12 hours-a-day five to seven days-a-week just to make a lousy half hour show. Actors suck at what they do. Wrestlers are better at what they do than anyone else in any field of entertainment.

Everything on TV is fake. EVERY sport, professional & amateur, at every level, has been busted for fixing results for either shaving points or taking an outright dive. Every "sport," that is, except for professional wrestling. The movies are fake, the soap operas are fake, Star Trek is fake, the fights on Jerry Springer are fake. The news is little more than a few bits and pieces of truth put together in a misleading way to further Corporate America's political agenda.

But wrestling is what it is. Wrestling doesn't pretend to be something that it is not. They tell you the results are pre-determined. They tell you that they are in it to make money. They tell you that they are in the entertainment business. Damnit, they tell you that they use gratuitous sex and violence because their viewers like it. Nowhere else will you get such honesty. Nowhere else will you get such effort, second for second, drop of sweat for drop of sweat. And that's why I like wrestling, boys and girls, because it is the only real thing on TV today.

I now return you to your endless search for pictures of high school girls having sex with farm animals. Hey! Both hands on that keyboard.
