INSIDE THE WRESTLER'S STUDIO
King of the Ring

Ah, home sweet home. For those of you who don't know me, I am Dmikester, the wrestling fan who tries to make sense of the promos cut by these professional athletes we call wrestlers. For those of you who do know me, well... I guess I just summed myself up pretty well back there.

In all seriousness, I was once a proud writer here at Slash. I actually got a fan after my first column, and things were looking great. Then, the hell that is school crept in and I was forced to stop for the remainder of the year. But I am now back and ready to unleash my opinions on you poor innocent wrestling column readers(are there such people?)

However, these are no ordinary opinions. You see, I am an actor and have been my entire life. The other reason I watch wrestling, other than the actual wrestling, is the acting. And since the WWF is BY FAR the best place to watch quality acting, I find myself drifting there more than the other two. And therefore, my reviews in this column will be of the WWF. These columns will consist of me reviewing the promos that are cut either between matches or at the beginnings and endings of matches. What I am going to do, like I did in the past, is basically review each actor's performance in the promo, the writing, and whether it served it's purpose or not. Remember, segments don't have to be brilliantly acted or written to be effective.

One more thing before we delve into this month's PPV. If there is a standout match, I will mention it in between reviews and probably rate it. I hope you enjoy this. I know I might.

KING OF THE RING

Well, the KOR was full of little segments, and most of them were wonderful. This is a show that will go down as one of the most entertaining wrestling shows I've ever seen, mainly for the brilliantly booked ending that left us all shocked. But I'm going off on a tangent here. Let's get to the promos!

JOE COOL

This was one of the best overall acted segments I've seen in a long time. It was terribly written(Joe Cool?!) but the expressions on the Facgime's faces in this, sans Stephanie, were priceless. Vince McMahon's character is just pure genius, since it's an example of placing an over-the-top, normally unbelievable character on an actor who is right for the role. In a Hollywood where miscasting happens so much, it's refreshing to see Vince play his character to perfection. HHH has been amazingly good at being subdued over the past couple of weeks, letting his anger simmer, and as a result, the tension in this promo was extremely intense. HHH was almost ready to burst, and Hunter played that beautifully. Shane was fine. Unfortunately, the way the inner tension has been building up, Shane is pretty much left stranded character-wise. So Shane did a very good job for having no character, but there should've been more.

BENOIT PROMO?!

Well, I was honestly scared for this one, but it wasn't bad. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad. The WWF is basically playing off of my theory that everybody is an actor. Sure, some are better than others, but everyone can act to a degree. Benoit is adequate. He basically plays a hardass and he does it just fine. The writing was fine and the length was fine. You get my point. The promo was... fine. Next.

PATTERSON LOOKIN FOR A DRESS

Well, this wasn't nearly as funny as it could've been mainly cause both actors botched their lines terribly and had no sense of comic timing. The writing was adequate for this kind of brainless humor, but Patterson and his woman are really, in a nutshell, terrible actors. Ok, Patterson is alright, but on the mic, he has NO sense of timing. Hell, I'd rather hear Road Dogg rap for an hour instead of hearing Patterson try to be funny in his delivery. Ok, that's about as far from the truth as I can get, but the fact remains: Patterson is not a comedian. Don't try to make him one.

RIKISHI INTERVIEW

Short and sweet segment basically showing that Rikishi would be in the finals. Good writing and adequate delivery from an adequate actor. Next please.

VINCE DOESN'T LOSE HIS COOL SINCE HE'S JOE

Sarcastic comments aside, this was a wonderful segment. You can't enjoy wrestling if you don't at least get transfixed by Vince's performances of his character. They are perfect in every way. One thing I'd like to point out here that is so important to Vince's character is body language and his posture. And no, I don't mean his struts to the ring. If you taped the show, watch how he leans over Linda in this and keeps really close to her the whole time. He exerts so much confidence and power in this segment, it's downright terrifying. But because his delivery is so great, you don't notice that little part of his performance. Also, best written segment of the whole year IMO.

PRE-MATCH BICKERINGS FROM ANGLE AND JERICHO

Not much to say here other than Angle is the best and most original drawer of cheap local heat I've ever seen. Jericho seemed way too goofy tonight, saying things that seemed strange and slightly out of character. In other words, it was great acting by these two masters, but bad writing for Jericho.

SHANE AND VINCE TALK

This was lackluster, but good. Vince seemed really subdued in this(probably because he worked so hard in the last segment) and Shane has no character right now, so the energy was odd. The ending though, with the two of them discussing HHH, was wonderful on the writer's part, providing for more tension between the Facgime.

EDGE AND CHRISTIAN GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO TIGER BEAT

This was short, but classic Edge and Christian. Amazing how much local sports heel heat is being drawn though. Almost as if the writers really wanted to rip on Boston. In any event, this was really funny for fans of those "other" sports, and it was a well-acted and well-written little segment. Christian in particular did an excellent job.

CRASH GETS GOOFY

This was amazingly good. Just picture-perfect acting. Crash's character is just plain goofy, and Crash did the classic great promo thing where he made his rambling seem natural when it was really carefully scripted. Hilarious and entertaining, this was a wonderful segment. It also brought attention back to Crash, so it served a double-purpose.

BRISCO LOOKIN FOR SOME PANTIES

Now this segment was actually funny. In fact, Brisco put Patterson out of his league with this one because his character is low-key! Every comedian is low-key in some way(hell, look at Jim Carrey in the Truman Show if you want to see low-key!) and Brisco is no exception. Also, the ending with the whole panties deal was just downright hilarious. This segment also had MUCH better writing than Patterson's segment, but even Patterson would have probably blown this one.

KANE TALKS TO COLE

The segment was mediocre in terms of writing and acting, but it served it's purpose. However, this is the angle right now that I enjoy the least in terms of the story line, so I just want to rant for a sec about it. One of the things that the WWF has been doing lately is converting most of their angles to reality. For example, the UnderTaker is no longer dead, he's a biker. However, they have been doing this by completely ignoring obvious plot discrepancies that come up. While I've been able to tolerate most of them, this one I can't. Look at Kane's past. His VOICEBOX was destroyed in that fire that forces him to wear a mask. Now, come on. That's just absurd. Think about talking without a voicebox. Hopefully, the WWF will explain this in some way, but if they do, it won't be realistic, so unfortunately Kane's ability to talk will always be an aggravating mystery.

BIKERTAKER LOOKS MAD AND FUMES

Well, we all know the UnderTaker. One of the best actors out there today doing a good job on an excellent gimmick. This segment was mediocre in terms of writing compared to some of the things done in the past, but it definitely served it's purpose. I'm scared of him,

PATTERSON AND BRISCO GET IT ON

This was just terrible. Mainly because it involved Patterson, one of the worst mic workers out there today, trying to sound convincing. The reason the Monday segment worked with Patterson getting the belt was because Patterson didn't try to trick Brisco until he hit a bottle over Brisco's head. Here, he tries to sweet talk Brisco, and if you can't act, it's just painful to watch someone pretend like they've been convinced. Put Brisco on the mic more, dammit!

DUDLEYZ SHOW OFF THEIR GRAFFITI SKILLZ

This was standard great Dudleyz fare. Who would have thought they would be where they are today in the WWF? I any event, this was short and to the point, setting up the fact that Tori was inevitably going to get it. Both were really in their characters here, and remained that way the rest of the night. I would love to work with the Dudleyz only because you know they're going to be on and ready to act every night. Also, have you noticed how great the writing is for the Dudleyz segments? Sometimes I wonder if D-Von improvises his lines, just like Steve Corino in ECW.

KURT ANGLE GETS FOCUSED

Well, if this was a glimpse into the future of Kurt Angle, I don't know what is. Notice how he completely dropped his character and got serious and ready to fight. This is a Kurt Angle we've never seen before, and it was really odd to watch. The one thing that's bad about this change for Kurt is that it requires almost no acting, and if his character changes into a straight-face, the WWF will be losing one of their greatest acting talents. Let's hope he doesn't change quite yet.

RIKISHI TALKS THROUGH THE PAIN

Well, this was short and effective. It was probably written in about five minutes and rehearsed for less than that. I have to admit, Rikishi's "right" at the end of his speeches are actually really funny. I don't know why, but if he keeps doing that, it may set up another aspect of his character that can only come out on the mic. We'll see.

VINCE IS STILL JOE AND HHH DOESN'T LIKE IT

This was a fine little segment setting up the tension between HHH and Vince. Vince was actually the most annoying person in this, mainly because his character was WAY too over the top, but he calmed down and it got better. Good writing and we're at the main event.

STANDOUT MATCH: THE MAIN EVENT

The main event of this PPV was simply unbelievable for the last five minutes or so. It was terrible, boring, badly choreographed crap for the first half, but the second half was breathtaking. In particular, the ending was just amazing. First, you have the UnderTaker chokeslamming Shane from above into the announcers table HARD. Then you have Kane actually delivering a Tombstone to HHH and brawling with him, which was great to see. Then of course the shock ending with Rock defeating Vince to win the title. It was just brilliant booking, and it has to be seen to believed.

So that's it. There was an interesting feel to last night in general. The counts were slower and everything seemed much more stiff and flowing instead of fast-paced and sloppy. It was a refreshing change, and hopefully they'll keep it up. The WWF continues to be on a roll with their PPV's, and this one was no execption. Also, the ending of this PPV set up so many possible storylines and angles, it's almost impossible to think of all the possibilities. Incredible show, and hopefully RAW will be great tomorrow. I know I can't wait. See ya'll on Tuesday with a RAW recap!
