THE DEVICE

There comes a time in a man's life when circumstances force him to delve deep into his soul and bring forth the warrior of days gone by. But why must the warrior return? To do battle with his ancient foe who has once again reared his ugly head (and his fat ass). What the hell am I talking like Warrior about? This...

DOOMSDAY 5, SHANNON 0

That's right, this is Dan Doomsday, and not only am I the Pride of 2Dope, the World's Most Dangerous Columnist and one bad mammajamma, I AM Doom Sexy the Shannon Killer, and I AM BACK!!!

You know, it appeared that ol' Slymm-fast had finally learned something in his old age. He stopped obsessing over Hyatte, he wrote some good stuff on Wrestleline, and he got in with Scott Keith on Rantsylvania. But you see, that's kind of where the trouble started. Once on Rantsylvania, Sean Shannon revealed that he's still an asshole, he probably always was an asshole, and he probably always will be an asshole. You see, when you have a couple of guys like CRZ and the Pride of 2Dope, and they want to write for your site, thereby raising the caliber of writing on your site, you let them write for you. Hell, you welcome them with open arms. But that didn't happen, now did it? What did Shannon do? Well, he didn't even RESPOND to my e-mail, and then he pulled that little stunt with CRZ that Chris documented quite nicely in last week's Nitro recap. Dumb, Shannon, real dumb. Half of Shannon's reraders would even know where to find him if it wasn't for CRZ, Hyatte, and myself. And yet, Shannon has the gall to show two of us massive disrespect. Well, Sean, bite me. And now, on to some EXTRANEOUS BULLSHIT.

DOOMSDAY ON MOVIES: This week's video pick, as much as I hate to admit it, is The Mighty Ducks (Direct all hate mail, ridicule, and insults to dandoomsday@wrestlingfanz.com). If you watch Joshua Jackson as Charlie in this movie, you see a lot of the character that will eventually become Pacey Witter on Dawson's Creek.

DOOMSDAY ON TV: Dawson's Creek kicked ass like a donkey last week. All right, so the plot was a blatant rip-off of Risky Business, but did anyone else notice Dawson making a very famous eyebrow gesture several times during the show?

DOOMSDAY ON BASKETBALL: Pippen on the Blazers? Shit. That's going to make the Pacific Division very interesting this year, with Portland, Pheonix, CRZ's Kings, and MY LAKERS all vying for the top spot. Lakers will still take it, though.

DOOMSDAY ON FOOTBALL: J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS JETS!!!! Hell Yeah! They won, no one got hurt, life is good. Now why couldn't they do that to the Broncos LAST YEAR!?!?!?

OK, enough. Oh, GO METS!!! Now, I'm going to write a column that I've wanted to write for a long time. It's about a guy who could have been the next big star. However, a combination of his own bad attitude and WCW's bad booking have ruined his career, and I must say, quite simply...

Buff Ain't the Stuff

He could've been a contender. That will be the line on Buff Bagwell for the rest of his career. His eight years in WCW will wind up amounting to very little. Sure, he has four WCW tag titles to his credit, but he'll never be the breakout singles star that he could have been. Why? Let's take a look.

Marcus Bagwell is a good wrestler. He's not great, just good. He has a very impressive physique, albeit a steroid-aided physique. He has a great-looking dropkick, and the dropkick has not lost its ability to excite a crowd. He has a solid repetoire of suplexes and slams, and he has a very nice-looking finisher in the Buff Blockbuster.

Initially, Bagwell was portrayed as the young, honest, hardworking kid. He scored some singles victories on midcard matches for a while in WCW, but didn't seem to be going anywhere. Tag Team matches gave Bagwell to wrestle on higher level, competing for, and even winning, the World Tag Team Titles. His partners included the likes of 2 Cold Scorpio, Tom Zenk, the Patriot, and Scotty Riggs. Eventually, though, Buff joined the New World Order, turning on Riggs and becoming the first WCW wrestler to accept Eric Bischoff's offer of nWo membership. After feuding with Riggs, he became just another nWo B-Teamer. He got a brief taste of the spotlight, portraying Curt Hennig in the now-famous Four Horsemen parody on Nitro, then competing in War Games at Fall Brawl '97.

After War Games, Buff disappeared into the midcard briefly, before recruiting Scott Steiner into the nWo. Then, a freak accident endangered Bagwell's career. On a live edition of Thunder in June 1998, Bagwell and Scott Norton took on Rick Steiner and Ray Traylor in a tag team match. The finish called for the DFG to hit the Steiner Bulldog, only for Big Poppa Pump's interference to score the win for the nWo team. However, Rick went over Bagwell's head and landed with his shoulder coming up from the mat. Bagwell's head hit Steiner's shoulder, causing his neck to snap back. Sound nasty? It was. Bagwell was in the ring paralyzed for over 20 minutes, before paramedics could remove him from the ring. Bagwell's future in wrestling was in danger.

Fortunately, Bagwell was able to make it back. Now, under the circumstances, what would you do? You'd probably create a storyline to separate Bagwell from the nWo, then bring him back, when ready, with a monster face push. Well, WCW didn't have that much sense, which is kind of disturbing. Instead, Bagwell teased a face push, then reunited with Big Poppa Pump to toy with Rick Steiner over the next few months. This storyline was beyond retarded, and gets my vote for WORST ANGLE EVER, based solely on the fact that this angle made Judy Bagwell (Buff's mom) a co-holder of the WCW World Tag Titles.

Eventually, this angle was brought to an end, and Buff split from the nWo. However, the damage was done. Fans were responding, but probably not as much as they would have if Bagwell had gotten his face push 6 months earlier. Roddy Piper didn't help matters, although the short-lived "new vs. old" angle allowed Bagwell to score a clean pin on Ric Flair. It's been all downhill from there.

The feud with Piper ended in a stupid boxing match (I hate it when wrestlers box), with Mills Lane making a pointless appearance as referee. A lukewarm feud with the Cat was tolerable at best. Bagwell's stock was falling, and everyone knew it. After Road Wild, rumors circulated about Bagwell complaining about the ending of his match with the Cat. Internet fans said, "What the hell?" Bagwell had no business complaining about a match that he won. Little did we know that the worst was yet to come.

When Alex Wright reappeared as Berlyn, then named Bagwell as his first opponent, I was somewhat skeptical. I would have had Berlyn defeat some lesser light (i.e. Brad Armstrong) in his first match, then go after Bagwell. Apparently, Bagwell agreed with me, and refused to do the debut job to Berlyn at Fall Brawl, causing an ugly match between Berlyn and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. For his part, Duggan didn't handle the situation well, either, refusing to sell for Berlyn.

Now, the fact of the matter is, I questioned WCW's booking. However, I don't work for WCW. Bagwell does. He's not the boss, therefore, he has to do what the boss says. Instead, he copped an attitude, and refused to do a job that wasn't THAT unreasonable. Bagwell showed his star attitude again last week, when he took issue with Evan Karagias for his tearway pants (Apparently, Bagwell thinks he has the Chippendale gimmick monopolized). Now besides the fact that I'm a big fan of Evan Karagias, I think Bagwell is way off base in accusing Evan of gimmick infringement. Bagwell is way off base, period.

The fact of the matter is this: Buff Bagwell has the wrestling skills of Tommy Dreamer (not great), the looks of Kidman, and the gimmick of Shawn Michaels. However, he also has HBK's ego, and Bagwell is no Shawn Michaels by any stretch of the imagination. I hope Vince Russo uses him as an all purpose jobber.

Well, that's all from here for this week. E-mail, e-mail, send me lots of e-mail. Until next week, this is Dan Doomsday, saying...
