WWF BACKLASH 2000
Continuing our run-up to this years' event, let's journey back to last year,
and visit a card that many called the best of 2000. So come with me, back to
a different time. The Radicals were teaching us to love wrestling again,
Essa Rios was flirting with fame, and The Big Show was (moderately) over...
Comin' atcha liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive(Original airdate 30/4/00)from the
Nation's capital, your hosts are Good Ol' JR, and Jerry Lawler. Anyone who's
not seen this show have missed out on possibly the greatest PPV setup of all
time. The swinging pendulums/spiky things that surrounded the entrance were
THE COOLEST. I've a feeling they'll resurrect them this year, too.
Opening Tag Team Title Match: X-Pac/Road Dogg w/The Eloquently Evil Tori
Vs. Edge/Christian(c): Shock of the night: Prematch, JEFF JARRETT'S music
fires up, and out walks...Debra. She's the guest ring announcer for the
opener, you see, and she's also completely LOADED. Think Jake Roberts Heroes
Of Wrestling, folks-she is literally stumbling down the aisle. She slurs the
introductions and hints at lesbian feelings for Tori, before Roadie
mercifully grabs the mic and does his spiel. Edge and Christian were on the
verge of turning heel here, but the key is in the entrance-they come through
the crowd for this match, and thus are faces. "X-Pac Sucks" chant fires up
right away.
Edge and Pac start, and Pac gets an armdrag and crotch chops. Edge bounces
back with a shoulderblock and a heel kick, and Pac bails and throws a
tantrum on the floor. Back in, and Pac hits a devastating, Visceraesque
loogie, then tags Dogg in. Punchy kicky keeps the heels in charge, but Edge
gets a flying headscissors and clothesline to come back. Tag to Christian,
and the champs hit Poetry In Motion, giving Christian a succession of three
two-counts. Dogg slaps him and tags Pac, and they get into a slugfest.
Christian powerslams him and tries the tne-punch countalong, but Dogg hangs
him ver the top rope and Pac hits his jumping clothesline. They beat up
Christian on the floor a bit, and Roadie covers for two in the ring. Front
fracelock and the crowd rallies for Christian, but the ref misses the hot
tag, allowing the heels to beat him down some more. Keep that spot in mind
for tonight. Broncobuster, and Dogg hits a NASTY kick to the back of
Christian's head for two. Edge saves, allowing more DX stomping for his
partner. Dogg sends Christian into the ropes and there's a malfunction at
the junction, putting both guys down. Pac comes in and attacks Christian,
allowing Edge to sneak in a very un-Benoitish diving headbutt on Roadie.
Christian crawls over for two. The heels try a double belly-to-back, but
Christian slips out and hits a double slop drop. Hot tag, and Edge cleans
house. Powerbomb on Pac gets two, with Dogg saving, then trying the
pumphandle slam. Christian saves Edge from that by going for the Impaler,
but Dogg shoves him into a spinning heel kick. Edge spears Dogg, then Tori
grabs him for Pac to nail, but Edge ducks and rolls him up for two. Roadie
and Christian fight on the floor and Pac hits the X-Factor in the ring, but
Christian manages to escape Roadie and nails Pac with the ringbell for the
pin at 9:25. Okay but pretty empty match.***. I rejoiced at the time because
I was SURE they would put DX over. Pac does a macho bladejob for the bell
shot. Good man, Sean. Debra tries to announce the winners without repeating
"World Wrestling" and slurring her words, and fails miserably.
In the back, The Rock arrives in a fancy shirt.
Light Heavyweight Title Match: Scotty II Hotty Vs. Dean "The Mofo Machine"
Malenko(c): Yes, a Light Heavyweight Title Match on PPV. I know, weird.
Anyhoo, these two had a pretty damn good little series while Grand Master
Sexay was injured, and this is the final blowoff. Dean draws MEGA heat here,
even putting his cohort Benoit to shame later in the show. The black belt
also makes it's debut here.
Scotty jumps the champ to kick off, hitting a backdrop and a clothesline for
a quick two. Dean is up quickly and tries a powerbomb, and Scotty slides out
and into an armdrag, then hits a dropkick for two. Scotty hits a
belly-to-back and dances, but gets jumped. he comes back with an inverted
atomic drop and an Irish whip. Bulldog attempt, but Dean simply clotheslines
his head off he goes for it. They go to the floor and Dean just beats the
crap out of him, then tosses Scotty back in and goes for the knee. Scotty
tries to fight back, so Dean simply dropkicks the knee. WWF fans who don't
know why everyone loves Dean Malenko-check this baby out.
Dean gets a quasi-spinning toe hold for a couple of two counts, then
barrages the knee with elbows and knees. To the post for more knee workage,
then Dean goes back to the toehold for two. Scotty fights up and tries an
enzuiguri, and Dean simply ducks and slams the knee into the canvas. Kneebar
gets a couple of two counts, and the crowd rallies for Scott-Ay. Dean uses
the ropes, but the ref catches him and he's forced to break. Scotty pulls
himself up, and Dean kicks his legs out from under him and stomps the knee.
Hennig kneebreaker, and Scotty manages to get the elusive enzuiguri to begin
his comeback. Dean reverses an Irish whip, however, and goes back to the
knee. Dean works it on the ropes and tries a Figure Four, but Scotty rolls
him up for two. Dean gets straight up and clobbers him, then taunts him. He
kicks the knee out, but Scotty grabs him and both tumble to the floor.
Scotty tosses Dean back in and goes upstairs, but Dean cuts him off and hits
a superplex. Both down.
They fight up and Scotty begins the Super-Worm comeback. Backslide gets two.
Inside cradle gets two. Irish whip, but Dean gets a belly-to-back. Powerbomb
attempt, but Scotty rolls out and gets the bulldog. W-O-R-M. Scotty
celebrates and Dean throws him into the corner and gets a Flair pin for two.
Wiastlock sequence gets Dean a butterfly powerbomb for two. Scotty blocks a
charge with a boot, but runs right into a powerslam for two. He manages to
send Dean to the floor, but gets hung over the top rope in the process. Dean
goes to the top and Scotty follows, looking for a superplex, but Dean
reverses IN MID AIR to a SUPER DDT. Ho-Lee Shit. The pinfall is academic at
13:00. Best finisher ever. Awesome, awesome match that I WISH the WWF had
capitalised on. You see, you don't need loads of fancy moves or swank
interviews to tell a story-Dean was an amazing heel here, and he should've
been pushed as such after this match. Scott Taylor was no slouch either-he
could have been the top lightweight babyface, and carried the division. But
such is life. ****1/4.
The "Spooky Hopscotch" Judgement Day/Undertaker promo.
Vince locker room spot.
The Acolytes Vs. The Big Bossmen: Brawl on the floor to start(duh).
Bradshaw kicks off against Bull in the ring and actually looks pretty
proficient in the process, hitting a DDT and a top-rope shoulderblock for
two.. Bull shows what won him a permanent job by rolling over Bradshaw's
back on a backdrop attempt, but he gets speared moments later. Tag to
Faarooq and he whups some righteous ass, but Bull gets his springboard
clothesline and tags the Bossman. He beats on Faarooq with some punchy-kicky
offence, but gets caught with a belly-to-back, a shoulderblock and a
clothesline for two. Faarooq throws Bossman to the floor and Bradshaw works
him over, then gets the tag. Faarooq beats on Bossman on the floor himself,
then throws him in to Bradshaw for two. Tag to Faarooq again, but he gets
clotheslined and Bull gets the tag. Bodyslam and elbowdrop, and the heels
tag quickly in and out, beating on Faarooq. Bull wrenches in a front
facelock, but Faarooq makes the hot tag-and for the second time tonight, the
ref misses it. Bull clotheslines Faarooq for two and hits the chinlock, but
he breaks too soon and Faarooq spinebusts him. Hot tag to Bradshaw and he
pounds Bull as Faarooq takes the Bossman to the floor. Bradshaw DDTs Bull
and goes upstairs, but Bossman crotches him and Bull hits a superplex for
two. Bradshaw rebounds from an Irish whip with a Clothesline From Hell, but
Bossman breaks up the cover. Faarooq drags him outside, and takes a
nightstick shot for his troubles. Bradshaw takes the same, and Bull hits a
nice top-rope ax kick for the pin at 7:41. Actually not that bad, if
completely pointless. They did the smart thing-kept the Bossman to a minimum
and allowed Bull to show his stuff. That's why Bull's on TV now and
Bossman's sitting at home eating donuts.*3/4
It's Feuding Family Time! The Hardys promise each other to play it fair.
Crash suggest that he and Hardcore team up in their Hardcore Title match
tonight, and Hardcore boxes his ears for coming up with such a ludicrous
idea.
Hardcore Title Match: Crash(c) Vs. Hardcore Holly Vs. Matt Hardy Vs. Jeff
Hardy Vs. Tazz Vs. Perry Saturn: Okay, bear with me here-play by play is
gonna be REAL difficult. Big ol' brawl to start. Crash takes a T-Bone and a
powerbomb from Saturn and Hardcore respectively, and everyone takes turns
breaking up covers. Tazz hits a Northern Lights suplexon the champ for two,
and Hardcore saves. Crash does the wise thing and makes a run for it, but
everyone follows and they brawl down the aisle. Crash climbs one of the big
swinging pendulums to escape, but matt follows him and knocks him onto the
rest of the participants, then dives onto them himself. More boring
brawling, punctuated by Jeff swinging off one of the pendulums into a rana
on Saturn. Crash runs back to the ring, and everyone follows. The Hardys
double team him and hit Poetry In Motion. Jeff grabs a chair but tazz kills
him with a clothesline. Saturn nails Tazz with a 2x4, then puts a
weird-looking abdominal stretch on Crash, looking like he's anally raping
poor Elroy. Tazz breaks it up and covers Crash for two. Saturn saves and
suplexes Crash, then Tazz clotheslines him. Hardcore comes in and nails
Crash with a sign for two. Saturn hits a spin kick for two. Crash rolls to
the floor and Tazz pounds him, but Matt nails Tazz with a lid. Matt covers
Crash for two, and Jeff breaks that up and gets his own two-count. Hardcore
suplexes Crash on the floor. Another run and everyone takes turns covering
again. Crash and Tazz roll in the ring and Crash gets a dropkick for two.
Saturn comes in and Crash sunset flips him for two. Jeff comes in and chokes
Crash with a cable, then Tazz whomps Jeff and Hardcore covers Crash for two.
He chokes Crash on the second rope, but Saturn German suplexes him then
covers Crash for two. Tazz saves and he and Saturn fight, then Tazz suplexes
Crash. Matt and Jeff go nuts with a couple of metal sheets, hitting
everyone. Jeff hits a legdrop for two, and Matt saves and covers for two
himself. Tazz sneaks up and chokes Matt with a cable, and Jeff hits his
split-leg springboard moonsault for two. Saturn breaks and hits a slingshot
splash for two. Hardcore saves and superplexes Crash for two. Saturn hits a
brainbuster for two as Hardcore and Saturn fight. Hardcore disposes of Tazz
and Hollycausts Crash onto a chair for two, but Matt saves. Jeff drags a
ladder into the ring to a BIG pop. Matt throws Hardcore into it, then
clotheslines him to the floor. Jeff hits the swanton from the ladder for
two, and he and Matt fight over who gets the pin. Tazz wipes both out and
stalks Crash, as the crowd goes BATSHIT. Seriously, Tazz was mega-over here
and should've been given the belt. Anyhoo, he locks on the Tazzmission, but
Saturn come sin and hits him with a stop sign and he and Crash collapse.
Saturn covers Crash for two, but Matt drags him to the floor. The Hardys hit
stereo planchas onto Hardcore and Saturn, and Crash falls on top of Tazz for
the pin in the ring at 12:18. For some bizarre reason, the Hardys' music
plays. A rare slip-up in the production department. Again, Tazz should have
gone over and moved the belt into a feud with Saturn, but I guess the men
with the pen thought Crash was more marketable. Assholes. Ending sequence
was REAL good, rest was pretty crap.**3/4.
Shane O Mac interview. Lotsa filler here.
Kurt Angle Vs. Big Show: Angle absolutely rips DC a new exit hole during
his entrance, cracking up everyone who doesn't live there. Show, not to be
outdone, unveils the crowning achievement during his impressionist
phase...The Showster! "Real American" fires up and Show strides out,
complete in yellow tights and weight belt, doo-rag and bleached moustache.
He rips his Showster shirt off and cuts an hilarious promo, ranting about
the Valley Of The Shadow Of Death and generally mocking Hogan in every way,
as the crowd collectively wets themselves with laughter. Angle jumps Show to
start, and is met with the HULK-UP OF DOOM! Show hits the big boot and
legdrop but it only gets two, to big boos. Angle comes back with a chopblock
and works the leg for some token offence, but the crowd rallies behind Show
by chanting "Hogan". JR gets the burn of the night in-"More people are
chanting Hogan than have in years!". Show comes back and goes all business,
ripping off his wig and chokeslamming Angle for the pin at 2:38. DUD, but
quite possibly the Funniest Match Of The Year.
The Dudley Boyz Vs. T&A w/Trish Stratus: This was the match that signified
the official Dudleys face turn, and also the match that gave T&A some decent
credibility. Boy, that didn't last long. Trish looks absolutely babelicious
here. Brawl to start and Buh Buh chases Trish, but runs right into a
clothesline from Test on the floor. Albert stomps D-Von in the ring but
D-Von hits a clothesline for two and tags Buh Buh. he hammers Albert on the
ropes, then shouts at Trish and elbowdrops Albert for two. He hits some more
basic offence and tags D-Von back in. Double suplex, and they hit Wazzup
(minus the Wazzup) behind the ref's back. Wardance Of Death gets a
two-count. Albert comes back with a bicycle kick and tags Test, and they hit
an Avalanche into a big boot for two. Test beats D-Von down in the corner
and D-Von gets a shoulderblock for one. Albert nails him, and Test hits a
doctorbomb. Tag to Albert, and a double spin cycle slam gets two. D-Von
fights back, but Test gets a blind tag. Abert powerslams D-Von and presses
Test onto him for two. Back elbow gets two, and D-Von comes back with a
swinging neckbreaker-but for the THIRD time on the show the ref misses the
hot tag. Albert hits a shoulderblock and nails Buh Buh on the apron. Second
rope catapult, but Buh Buh breaks up the count. Test comes in with a
clothesline for two. Albert in, and D-Von manages a second rope sunset flip
for two. Albert hits a sitout powerbomb for two. Albert goes to the second
turnbuckle, but D-Von hits him in the gut and superplexes him. Hot tag on
both sides and Buh Buh clobbers both. Samoan Drop gets two on Test, and
D-Von tosses Albert outside and the Duds hit a double team neckbreaker
(called 3D incorrectly by JR, who took a year to grasp that move)on Test for
two. Albert hits the Albert Bomb on Buh Buh, but Test misses the Savage
Elbow and Buh Buh covers for two. Albert hits the floor again and the Duds
go for 3D proper, but Trish distracts Buh Buh, allowing Test to hit the big
boot for the pin at 11:11. Decent power match, something that's always
unfairly judged by the I-Net intelligentsia.**3/4. The Duds go nuts on T&A,
hitting the Buh Buh Cutter on Test and a screwed-up 3D on Albert, and D-Von
Gets The Table. Buh Buh (who's bleeding from about three different places on
his face) grabs Trish, who tries the liplock to escape. It seems to have
worked-but Buh Buh shakes it off and the crowd goes nuts. You can guess what
happens next.
Following the wood treatment the EMTs gurney Trish to the ambulance-and
when she gets there, the Filthy Animals kidnap her and take her to the
desert! Well, not really, but Eddie Guerrero and Chyna arrive fresh from the
prom in Eddie's Chevy. A ref informs him that his title match is RIGHT NOW,
and he'll be stripped of the belt if he doesn't get out to the ring. So
Eddie does the smart thing-he drives to ringside and changes into his gear
in the trunk.
European Title Match: Eddie Guerrero w/Chyna Vs. Essa Rios w/Lita: Rios'
first and last date with destiny-his highest profile angle after this was
losing Lita, and that didn't even include a blowoff match. Eddie wrestles in
his bow tie, looking pretty cool. Oh, and Lita has had MAJOR puppy
enhancement since this. Eddie dropkicks Essa to start and hits a flying back
elbow, but Essa rolls through a tilt-o-whirl and hits his own. Eddie stays
in charge with a belly-to-back and taunts the crowd. Armdrag, and he works
the arm. Rios comes back and tries his flippy-floppy armdrag, but he screws
up and JR audibly laughs at him. Rios settles for a regular armdrag and an
elbowdrop. Another armdrag, and Eddie bails. Rios tries a pescado but Eddie
dodges and throws him into the steps. Back in and Eddie hits the slingshot
senton, then throws him to the floor again. Chyna nails him and throws him
back in. Rope reversal leads to a Rios dropkick, and a missile dropkick gets
him a two count. Sleeper, but Eddie hits a jawbreaker. Powerbomb attempt is
reversed into an armdrag. Criss-cross sequence, and Rios hits a NASTY monkey
flip, jamming Eddie's head and neck under the bottom rope. Crowd audibly
pities Eddie. He's pretty shaken up, but still manages to low-bridge Rios
and send him to the floor. Chyna nails him again and Eddie hits a pescado.
He tries a powerbomb, and Lita tries a leap off the top turnbuckle, but
Chyna shoves her off into the Spaniard's Table. The distraction's enough for
Essa to backdrop Eddie, and he follows up with an asai moonsault, slamming
his legs into the announcer's table in the process. Back in, and a missile
dropkick knocks Eddie straight back out. Essa FLATTENS him with his
cross-corner tope con hilo. He tosses Eddie back in and goes upstairs, but
Chyna trips him and Eddie hits a superplex. Both down, and Rios covers for
two. Eddie rolls out of a belly-to-back and hits a baribuster, then heads
upstairs, but Essa armdrags him down. Moonsalt attempt hits knees, and Eddie
finishes it with the Gory Special neckbreaker-airplane spin into neckbreaker
drop, from the Razor's Edge position-at 8:47. Sloppy, spotty and
slow-paced.**3/4. Those who cry and bitch about Essa getting pushed, SHUT
UP. The guy could not even put on a good match against Eddie Freaking
Guerrero, PLUS he nearly killed him in the process of trying. Lita strips
Chyna after the match, and Eddie admires his Mamacita.
Triple H and Vince get rowdy backstage.
Benoit interview. He's REALLY improved, you know. He's gonna express his
emotions all over Chris Jericho. Ewwww.....
Another Spooky Hopscotch spot.
Intercontinental Title Match: Chris Jericho Vs. Chris Benoit(c): Jericho
cuts a half-assed promo pre-match, adding credence to the legend that he
doesn't put as much effort in when he's not winning. Ooops, gave away the
ending. Lock-up, and both men tumble to the floor rather than break. Lucha
Moment: They exchange bitch slaps on the floor. Back in and Jericho hits a
nice headlock takedown, which Benoit counters with a headscissors. Same
sequence with the roles reversed. They go nose to nose and trash talk, then
pull out a swank pinfall reversal sequence for several two-counts. Chop
exchange(Owwwwwwwww)and Benoit takes over. Jericho dodges a charge and hits
a drop toehold, then pounds Benoit. Irish whip is reversed, and Benoit gets
two out of three German suplexes. Jericho blocks the third by grabbing the
ropes, so Benoit belly-to-back suplexes him over the top rope. Tope attempt
misses, Jericho stomps him but gets whipped into the steps. He avoids the
impact by hopping over them, so Benoit dropkicks them into his legs. That
was VICIOUS. It gets two back in the ring, and Benoit knees Jericho in the
gut. Gutbuster, and he stomps a mudhole in Jericho. Jericho fights back, but
misses a dropkick, and Benoit catapults him into the corner. He hangs
Jericho on the top rope with a suplex, then snap suplexes him for two.
Another knee to the gut, and an abdominal stretch, with Benoit pounding
Jericho in the chest while the hold is locked in. Jericho armdrags out and
hits a back elbow and the Lionsault, but he can't capitalise. He manages to
roll over for two. Benoit hits some more chops and stomps, but Jericho
reverses an Irish whip. Benoit blocks a charge with his boot, but Jericho
hits a heel kick. More Benoit chops, but Jericho cuts him off with a bulldog
for two. Jericho gets some chops, and a rollup off the ropes for two. Benoit
tries a suplex, but Jericho counters and hangs him on the top strand.
Springboard dropkick attempt, but Benoit swats him away and tries a
moonsault(?). He gets crotched, but rolls through Jericho's belly-to-back
superplex. Both men down-again-and Benoit rolls over for two. They fight
over a backslide, and Jericho gets the double powerbomb from it for two.
Benoit reverses to the crossface, and the crowd wakes up. Jericho makes the
ropes and Benoit tries the hold again, but Jericho rolls through it and
applies the Walls Of Jericho. Benoit makes the ropes, natch, and the ref
takes a wayward flying forearm from Jericho. Benoit grabs the title belt and
cracks Jericho with it, for two. Snap suplex onto the belt, and he goes for
Air Canada, but it misses and the ref calls for the bell, giving a DQ win to
Benoit at 15:08.
JR berates the decision, until they cue up the replays, showing Jericho
holding up the belt for Benoit's headbutt. Jericho goes all Ken Shamrock
after the decision and sinks the Walls in on the ref. Real good match, but
there was better to come.***3/4.
WWF Title Match, Special Referee: Shane McMahon: The Rock Vs. Triple H
w/Vince McMahon & Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley: This was, of course, the Big
match, where Steve Austin was set to return and be Rocky's special enforcer.
Vince gets the crowd all riles up by announcing Austin's absence due to
"transport problems" Staredown to kick off, then a slugfest. Trip takes
over, but Rocky gets a back elbow. Trip tries a quick Pedigree, and Rocky
backdrops him and stomps him in the corner. Shane shoves him off, allowing
Trip to sneak up with a neckbreaker. Rocky hits a belly-to-back, but Trip
sends him to the floor. He follows and works Rocky over, and Vince hurls him
into the ringpost for good measure. Trip and Shane share a hug in the ring,
and Trip covers Rocky for two. Rocky fights back, but Trip hits the high
knee for two. Suplex, and the Greenwich Knee gets a trio of two counts. He
pounds Rocky some more, and gets a sleeper,. JR mocks the I-Net speculation
that "Austin was gonna show up and stab Rock in the back tonight". Wow, JR,
that's kinda childish, from where I sit. I bet you're feeling pretty foolish
now, huh?
Shane tests the arm and Rocky fights up, but Trip clotheslines him for two.
Heel ten-punch countalong, but Rock hits Snake Eyes. Both down, and Rocky
fights up with right hands, so Vince nails him with the title belt. Trip
covers for a VERY quick two. Rocky comes back with some more rights and a
clothesline, then throws Trip to the floor. Back in and Trip hits the
facebuster, but Rocky hits a DDT. Shane won't count-drawing BIG heel heat-so
Rocky flips and kicks his ass, sending him to the floor. Trip bundles Rocky
out and throws him into the steps, then sets up the Angle Killer Pedigree.
Rocky low blows him, and he pulls Shane up onto the announce table, and
delivers a DOUBLE Rock Bottom through the table! Pretty messy, but cool
nonetheless. Reactions: Vince does "The Roger Moore Gulp", while Steph gives
us "I'm Blowing The Invisible Man". Although given the amount of steroids
there, I'd say Trip's probably is invis....Never mind.
Rocky is up first-obviously-and he throws Trip in the ring, but Vince hits
him from behind. Rocky goes for him, but trip hits a low blow and the
Pedigree. Shane is still crawling around on the outside, so Vince calls out
the troops-namely, Patterson and Brisco, clad in ref's shirts. Patterson
gets a two count, so the Stooges stomp Rock. Vince and Trip beat on him-and
the glass breaks. The crowd absolutely comes unglued as Steve Austin w/Gut
storms the ring and wipes out EVERYONE(except Rock)with a chair. He bitches
out Vince-needing a chair to help him back up to his feet-then walks out, as
Linda McMahon w/The Earl Of Hebner enters. She shoves Steph down and directs
Hebner into the ring, and Rocky makes it four world titles with the
spinebuster/People's Elbow combo at 19:23. Hideously overbooked but really
good anyway.***3/4. Rocky celebrates, and Austin tows in the blown-up DX
Express bus, then shares a few beers with the new champ.
Final Thought: Watching Backlash '99, then this, the differences pre- and
post-millennium are huge. The overall quality, the maturity, and the realism
on display here dwarfs Russo's fantasy world of Ministrys, S&M
Intercontinental Champions and Ken Shamrock's sister. Top show, although I
would definitely be hesitant to call it best of last year-I'd say that
accolade goes to SummerSlam 2000, which had something for everyone. Here,
both Benoit/Jericho and the main event are good, but they were vastly
overrated this time last year, and they're hurt by certain moronic
factors-Benoit/Jericho had a REALLY frustrating non-finish, and the
overbooking was very annoying in the title match. But the Light Heavyweight
Title match was really really good, and the matches criticised above are
still worth a look. Recommended show.
Okay, the time when I completely frick up and look stupid is
here....Backlash 2001 Predictions! But first, a word on the WWF's direction
at the moment. I' unlike many others, have actually enjoyed Austin's heel
turn, Rhyno's push, and many other factors that have caused my fellow I-Net
comrades to groan. I do think the wrestling quality is very good right now.
However, something else is bothering me. Paul Heyman definitely has a hand
on the booker's pencil right now, and it shows. We're seeing a similar
erratic, Bill Watts-on-crack booking style that populated the final years of
ECW. Titles are switched way too regularly, the actual title matches are
schmozzes, and angles are shot and then abandoned within days for something
new. How many title changes have we seen since WrestleMania? Six. That is a
LITTLE excessive, methinks. And what about the slapdash booking style?
Example: All signs-even the WWF's website-pointed to Raven getting a shot at
Eddie Guerrero this Sunday. Now, at the last minute, Matt Hardy gets the
title, and the match is altered to Matt Hardy Vs. Christian Vs. Eddie. What
the Hell? What is the fricking point in the Eddy/Raven interaction over the
past few weeks? Why are we supposed to care about Hardy/Christian/Edde at
Backlash? Is this some sort of massive grudge Paul has against Raven or
something, or is this going to become widespread? Another thing-if the fed
knew from WrestleMania that Taker & Kane were headed to Backlash, why wasn't
that match pushed sooner, rather than leaving it until two weeks before the
event? I am a BIG ECW fan, but if this is Paul E.'s doing, then they need to
keep him at the commentary table.
Main Event-Triple Title Match: The Brothers Dead Vs. The Two-Man nWo: I
don't care what the smarks are saying, this match will be okay, and it will
get a decent buyrate for the show. Taker and Kane have proved they can hold
their own when working with two above-average main-eventers. Check out last
year's Unforgiven if you don't believe me.
I SAY: Vince's boys go over, making Trip the second-ever Grand Slam winner.
That sets up them losing the straps to the Hardys, then their eventual
split. Rating: ***1/4.
30 Minute Iron man Submission Match: Pfft, who cares, this'll RULE IT will
room to spare. Angle's done a tremendous job in helping Benoit's face turn.
This will be match of the night.
I SAY: Benoit takes it one-nil, after a tense final minute of ankle lock
agony. Rating:****½.
Duchess Of Queensbury Rules Match: Good Will regal Vs. Chris Jericho: I'm
guessing they're gonna pull an Over The Edge '99 here, and Regal will
continuously change the rules to make victory his.
I SAY: Regal wins. I hope. The British Badass needs some momentum for next
week's Insurrextion, where he'll beat Chris Benoit-and I'll be there LIVE,
Baby! Rating: ***1/2.
Last Man Standing: Shane O Mac Vs. Big Fat Motherfuckin' Show: The Parade O'
Jobs continues for Show, as he is undoubtedly going to lose to the Boy
Wonder here. Look for some WCW guys to get involved.
I SAY: Shane beats the count with assistance from Booker and Mike Awesome.
After all, can you really see Shane Helms laying the smack down on the Show?
Rating:**
European Title Match: Matt Hardy Vs. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Christian: I really
don't know what they're playing at here. What the HELL is the point of this?
It looks rushed, stupid and heatless-on paper, at least. Damn it, I wanted
Raven to get the shot!
I SAY: Raven runs in and DDTs all three men out of commission....Or Matt
retains. Rating: ***1/4.
X-Factor Vs. 3D: This should most definitely be a Tables Match, and I think
it'll end up one before belltime Sunday night.
I SAY: Dudleys win, but X-Factor brutalise Li'l Spike-again. rating: **½ .
Hardcore Title Match: Rhyno Vs. Raven: I heard this mentioned somewhere, but
I don't know if it's the case. We'll see, I guess. Hardcore Holly could get
the shot, but if we follow Paul E's twisted logic that would make no sense
whatsoever.
I SAY: Regardless of opponent, Rhyno retains with a Gore. Rating: **
Well, that's seven matches. There'll be a couple more, I guess, possibly
even a Light Heavyweight Title Match. Don't hold your breath though. Direct
feedback to the raven, and I'll see you Monday. Toodles!
