No One Cares!

I've never been known as they type of person to mince words. Quite often, things I say get me in trouble, and I find myself apologizing to friends and loved ones because of rude remarks made in the heat of the moment. Sometimes I lose track of what makes me such a nice human being and I say things I don't really mean; but then again, all of us do exactly that at one moment or another.

Today, I'm going to say something that will shock, horrify, and confuse quite a few of you.

Hulk Hogan is the savior of World Championship Wrestling.

Once you've regained your bodily functions and slipped back into Smart Wrestling Fan mode, keep reading this column.

On Monday, July 12, 1999, Terry "Hulk" Hogan returned to WCW, and in the process of a World Title match with interim champion Randy Savage, boosted Nitro's ratings higher than they have been for quite some time. In the last quarter hour of the show, Hogan and Savage posted a 4.7 rating - nearly two points higher than the recent Nitro average.

Those of you who are anti-Hogan (see: Workrate Nazi) will no doubt point out the deficiencies of the Savage/Hogan match. You'll cry out that because Hogan used a weight belt for the majority of the match, it is doomed to being a subpar encounter. You'll complain about the workrate of the match, in the process making yourself look more and more like Herb Kunze with every sentence that comes out of your mouth.

But you see, there's one problem with your reasonings....

No one cares!

WCW has made a sound decision in putting the belt on Hogan this time, and it is evident by the way the ratings spiked as soon as he appeared on television. Like him or hate him, Hogan is an icon, and people will tune in to see Hogan reprise his old character, even if it does have an "evil" twist to it.

"But he's ancient," you complain. "No one that age should be contending for a belt, much less the World Title!"

It's funny that the mere mention of Ric Flair's name brings about claims of mistreatment and injustice. Every time Flair adds a new twist to his insane President gimmick, you people say that he should be rewarded with a World title.

What?!

Ric Flair is 50 years old. Let me spell that out for you - fifty years old! And not only is he older than Methusalah and Moses combined, he is horrible in the ring! Granted, Ric Flair was once a legend, but his star has faded quickly, and he's now nothing but a joke.

How can you claim that Ric Flair is deserving of a World title, but Hogan isn't?

There's something funny about that, isn't there?

I'm not a wrestling insider, but I'll play one for the purposes of this column. I'm willing to bet that Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart will help WCW on the long, slow road to recovery.

All along the way, you Workrate Nazis will complain. You'll moan and shed a few tears over the lost art of making a 5 star match, and you'll pop in your Japanese wrestling tapes in search of the Holy Grail of a Misawa/Kobashi match. You'll ridicule your fellow wrestling fans who enjoy such farces as a Hogan/Nash or Hogan/Hart main event, and in the process you'll prove that "your" wrestling is superior to "our" wrestling.

You know what?

You got it.

No one cares.
