THE EXPANSION COLUMN FOR 12/13/99

Once again, Michaelangelo here for fun and hilarity and all that happy horseshit. How was your weekend, folks? Can you believe I have yet to start my Christmas shopping. I'm waiting for the gift fairy to stick them under my pillow at night.

Good thing I'm not getting my father that bowling ball he wants this year.

So, interesting week in the world of wrestling. Alicia Witt (Ryan Shamrock/Symphony) and Torrie Wilson (Yowza) had individual contractual disputes with WCW and there was danger of the two women walking away from the promotion. Seems now that they have both come to agreements with the company and are sticking around. That's good news as far as I'm concerned because I find both these women to be among the most beautiful in wrestling today.

Now, if WCW could re-sign Chastity, I could go to my grave happy.

And don't get me started on Chae.

It's My Column and I'll rant if I Want To

First off is Armageddon. I did not see the show yet, but I have heard all about it. Glad to see Jericho finally came away with the IC strap and, in retrospect, it was better for him to have won it now instead of at the last PPV. It seems like so much more of a truly hard-earned championship. Here's to a long title run, Lionheart.

I heard all about the four-corners evening gown match for the Women's Championship. I guess the WWF has decided to destroy any credibility that this title could ever possibly hold. I mean, when it's most of the division's matches take place in mud, gravy, or water, and the ring attire consists of g-strings, thongs, and evening gowns, how can you expect it to be taken seriously.

But, I guess that's Vince's whole point. He's using the women wrestlers (Chyna excluded) to interject T &A into his shows and that's it. If Ivory, Jackie, Luna, and Torrie can put up with it, who are we to argue?

Now, then, there's the matter of Miss Kitty showing the goods after her title win. The theory that I subscribe to is that this is Vince's way of saying to the critics and advertisers , "Sure, the TV show will tone the sexual content down, but that means the PPV's will be all the more risqué."

I mean, knowing that there's a chance one of these lovely ladies will expose herself on live television will increase buyrates. I guarantee it. That is, until people start to realize that they can get more than a two-second flash from anything on Cinemax after 9 p.m.

Not that I know, or anything. I just heard from this guy that I used to room with...

Ahem.

For the record, Kitty has nice breasts, but...

...no, I won't say it. You know the drill.

Last WWF topic, Stef and HHH joining forces. This is one of the rare times that a storyline that was widely postulated on the Internet was actually used intact. Usually, they change the endings at the last minute to swerve the fans. Not this time. We all figured Stef would do the big heel turn and join DX, and it happened. Now we can sit back and watch the aftermath. I am personally looking forward to the coming weeks.

Over in WCW, Thursday Thunder this week showed just how good a show can be if the stars are booked to appear. The only problem I have is the "Crash TV" approach. Thunder used to be one of the last bastions of good wrestling on television. It's going to turn into Smackdown now and that scares me a bit. Will I have to watch WCW Saturday Night to get a headlock or an arm bar?

Probably.

On we go to the:

Letters

This week's Question of the Week was:

Which heel in wrestling today do you hate the most and why?

This week, I got another disappointing number of answers? One week I get 20 and the next, three. Hmm. Gotta rethink my questions. Any suggestions?

...which heel do I hate the most? Hmmm..YOU! And why? BECAUSE YOU WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT THAT...CYANINDIGO CHICK! GET A ROOM! Now go sulk in the corner and think about what you've done.

Now, that wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I asked this question, but I must say, it's kind of cool to be thought of as a heel in wrestling today.

Bon soir, Cherie, and allow me to blow a Quebecois kiss your way.
Good stuff from the Expansion Column last week. Kind of wish there were some vague references to toy around with, but I suppose I'll have to find something else to play with. Hm.

Who do I hate the most as a heel today, right here, right now?

Well, I don't know if mine counts. Anyone who knows me at all has seen me sputter with rage every time one particular punk comes out to interfere, do that god-awful buster and generally look like a huge douchebag in those canvas hats that are the supposed norm of "cool" right now.

But is the 1-2-3 Skid a heel? He's getting booed. (FINALLY!) But he's DX, and that means instantaneous popularity. Hm.

So I'd have to go with...hm.... well.... I hate Sting and DDP and the LOD ... but there's all faces. SHIT.

Forget it. X-Pac all the way. If I had the opportunity, I'd bitch-slap him and sucker punch him in the throat.

Twice.

Keep breathing, dear painter, I hardly think it necessary to have your heart sputter to a stop whenever I'm around. Not unless you're rich, of course. Are you?

Consider yourself SQUOZEN. I'll see you in your dreams of the Days Inn motel.

Two CyanIndigo letters in as many weeks? What did I do to deserve this?

Am I rich? Well, rich in spirit.

Okay, I admit it, I'm broke. I can't even afford to pay attention.

I'm squozen! Loving life...is me.

Oh, one more thing regarding CyanIndigo. Hubba-yowza.

Hey Michaelangelo--

I've been reading the columns on slash Wrestling since CRZ started it, but I've never written until now.

First, I wanted to let you know that your GB&U column is (next to CRZ's recaps) my favorite column on the site. I enjoy the real-time, gut-feeling that your reviewing style gives each show.

In response to your "ultimate mark-out", and in danger of dating myself as an old-timer, my biggest mark-out was when Rick Steiner won the TV title from Mike Rotundo at ... (can't remember the exact event - I'm sure I have the Netcop rant somewhere though). I followed the more than a year long build up of this feud, with Sullivan, Rotundo, and Williams mercilessly destroying Steiner. With every beatdown, his sympathy heat raised, until it finally overflowed when he took the title. I recently saw it again on an old tape, and still felt like leaping from my chair as Rick ran around the ring in celebration. An listen to the crowd - now that's a POP!

Might be a bit late, but the vague references I know are:
1- Princess Bride - Andre knocked unconscious
2- Wasn't this Mad Max:Thunderdome?
3- My wife said this was from a cartoon
4-???

Thanks for the columns - keep up the good work!

Logan Gibbons

Thanks for the complements, Logan. For the answers to the vague references, look at last week's Expansion Column.  For more wacky pop-culture tidbits, read this week's returning "Good, Bad, and Ugly" which should be up mid-week.

Which Heel do I hate the most? Probably Steve Corino over at ECW. He's got the cowardly act down to a "t" and I just love to hate guys like that.

Question of The Week

An easy one that you should all have an answer to, so WRITE ME THIS WEEK or else I will force you all to look at nude pictures of Estelle Getty.

Don't think I won't.

Anyway, here it is:

When, where, and was the first match you remember watching (televised or live)?

As usual, send all responses to michaelangelo70@hotmail.com.

Okay, short column this week, I know. It would be longer if I got more LETTERS. Hint, hint.

Take it easy kiddies. See you midweek!

I am Michaelangelo and will be for a while.
