THE FINAL WORD ON WCW GREAT AMERICAN BASH

Well for this weeks opener I'm going to try and reply to three e-mails all at once! Has this ever been attempted? Well as of late I've been asked to give a bit of history about myself, a sort of introduction if you like. Well my name's Chris Anderson (duh) and I'm 16. This is my first writing gig on the 'net, although I've been following proceedings here for about three years. I'd like to publicly thank CRZ for giving me the opportunity to write about wrestling and have it published right here at [Slash]. I'm loving every minute of it.

Now for some blatant plugs:

ChonoFan wrote a good piece, right insert here link at [Slash], about the crumbling world of online wrestling. It was well written and summed up what I've been thinking about online wrestling for a long time. When I started out on the 'net I used to visit sites like Wrestlemaniacs (when it had its own .com), nWWWo.com, and the old Rantsylvania; most of which are now deceased. It's sad the way times change, as, in those days, there was a perfect balance of news sites and commentary sites. Now the 'net wrestling world seems to be full of shitty newsboards run by 12 year olds.

I also urge you to check out a great writer in Steven A. Black at Rantsylvania.com. His PPV previews are a breath of fresh air at Rantsylvania.

Anyway on with the task in hand, the WCW Great American Bash 2000 'Final Word' column...

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY FOR WCW GREAT AMERICAN BASH 2000

INTRO
What can I say? As you all know WCW have been doing rather badly lately (come on I'm trying to put I politely) so I'm going to try and review this show with minimal bitterness (if that's possible). So we've got two retirement matches, and a possible career ending match tonight; Sting vs. Vampiro, Hogan vs. Kidman, and Ric Flair vs. David Flair. Not to mention probably the main event that I'm least looking forward to this year in Nash vs. Jarrett. Oh well on with the shit I suppose.

THE GOOD

  • Ric Flair vs. David Flair. Ok so it wasn't an amazing PPV building match, but with all the other shit (and I mean shit) on this WCW card this was by far the best match. Ric Flair, a 50 plus year old, carried his son David to a pretty respectable match. I suppose the thing that set this match apart from the rest was both men's ability to tell a story in the ring. This match was full of the same Russo drama (including a bizarre spot where Reid Flair low blowed Russo. You go!) but it was most definitely superior to anything else that Russo churned out of the crap machine for this show.

  • Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs. Disco Inferno. Ok sorry people I'm clutching for good points here. This wasn't a bad match at all, infact I'd say it was the second best match on the whole show. Although we had to put up with shit from both the MIA and the Filthy Animals the in ring stuff still reared its head here. The main weakness of the match was its shortness (only about 4 minutes long). Nevertheless we did see Major Guns give "the old guy" mouth to mouth! (take note of the severe use of sarcasm).

    THE BAD

  • Sting vs. Vampiro. I hate to say this (with two of WCW's best workers in the ring) but this match really sucked, and I MEAN SUCKED! Surely a contender for the infamous RSPW "Worst Match of the Year" award. I thought it couldn't have got any worse, but when I saw the Sting stunt man I felt sick to my stomach. Once again we have a perfect example of Russo working movies into wrestling. As if it wasn't bad enough hiring David Arquette in they have to go and hire a FUCKING stunt man in to do the highly overbooked stunts for them. Absolute shit (yeah I know I've just broken the column writing swearing limit but I'm very upset). WCW's self mutilation will continue until they learn not to overbook stupid crap like this. My commiseration's go out to Steve Borden and Vampiro.

Tank and Rick Stenier vs. Scott Stenier. Can you say "heel beatdown?" You can? Well say it then. More of the same stupidly booked crap here folks. The heels pound the heck out of poor old Scott Stenier (does he look like a face to you?) until for some reason Rick tells Tank not to hit Scott with a chain. By now I was saying my first "holy shit" of the night for all the wrong reasons. The inevitable happens when Scott hits Tank with the chain, and puts of the Stenier Recliner for the win. Why God, why?

    THE UGLY

  • WCW's set design. Very tacky if I may say so myself.

    THE TOP PERFORMERS

  • Ric Flair - Well he carried his no talent son, didn't he?

  • Chavo Guerrero Jr - Good match with Disco Inferno. Is he the only wrestler in WCW?

  • Disco Inferno - Wrestled in the second best match of the night with Chavo Gerrero Jr. (yes you read the right; Disco Inferno wrestled in the second best match of the night!)

    THE RATINGS

Here is what I thought of all the matches. As usual rated with that blasted star system (this is how pissed off WCW has made me; I've resorted to slagging off the star system!)

Ric Flair vs. David Flair - ***
Lt. Loco vs. Disco Inferno - **1/2
The Kronic vs. Mamalukes - *1/2
Mike Awesome vs. DDP - *1/2
    G.I. Bro vs. Sean Stasiak - 1/4*
Hulk Hogan vs. Billy Kidman - DUD
Jeff Jarrett vs. Kevin Nash - DUD
Shane Douglas vs. The Wall - -*
Scott Steiner vs. Tank Abbott & Rick Steiner - -***1/2
    Vampiro vs. Sting - -****

    THE BOTTOM LINES

Is this the worst PPV ever? Well I actually think 'Heroes of Wrestling' edges that one, but this years Great American still sucked mucho ass. This was a very bad PPV. And to think Great American Bash was once a figure head show for WCW. Trust Ruschoff to destroy another legacy. This show had two DUD, three negative star matches, and the highest rated match was at ***. To make matters worse Bischoff's so called 'Big Suprise' went down in history as a big con. What Goldberg as a heel? You've got to be joking.

Overall Show Rating: 1/2* (without Ric Flair this show would have been close to a negative overall rating!)
