Worst Heel

Awards
Worst Heel

Award Description:

To be given to the person whose casting as a bad guy just didn't work well.
Maybe there was just no heel heat drawn or maybe the fans actually cheered
this person, but for whatever reason the heel image just didn't get over.

CHRIS BIRD: Undertaker turned heel, got face heat, and then eventually
dwindled down to sucking heat away from over wrestlers and hurting them.
Brian Knobbs' heel pushes were pathetic. Sid was a joke.

EDC: David Flair is quite possibly the worst wrestler in the world. As a
heel he was laughable. Viscera and Berlyn suck but not as badly as DF.

RFLAGG13: Hey, for old times sake, why don't we put Hogan at the top here?
He deserves every bit of it, even if he does get voted for this
automatically. Second is Rick Steiner, whose nonexistant mic skills make
me want to chuck a bowling ball through my TV. His wrestling doesn't do
much for me, either. Third is the Undertaker, whose ridiculous antics
earlier this year as leader of the Ministry reek of desperation in a vain
attempt to keep him over. I admire him for being able to stay over this
long, but enough already.

K. CANZANELLA: Berlyn is a horribly outdated gimmick on the worst wrestler
possible to be chosen to play the part. Yeah, the Germans are taking over
and their machine of war is a pasty white guitar string with a common mid
grade power move as a finisher. ... Yeah. The Undertaker is supposed to be
scary or something but boy does he bore the beegeesus out of me. I am ass
man! This song is ass man! You can kiss my ass Mcman!

JOEL BOUTIERE: On Sting for worst heel: Not because he sucks or anything,
but... come on! The Stinger, a heel?!? Nobody bought it, so definitely
worst heel goes to Sting.

SVEN MASCARENHAS: Memo to Steve Blackman: if you're supposed to be evil,
you have to act evil. David Flair only got remotely threatening after the
year ended, and DDP had to ask fans to boo him... definitely not a good
sign, for him or his momma.

AARON: Dting as a bad guy? Boy, that was a hit. Bossman, particularly
during the Al Snow fued, was the most heatless heel this side of Double J.
And Sid ran the whole bad-ass concept into the ground.

OCTAVIAN: I voted for Sting as Worst Heel not because I don't like him as
a wrestler, but because the heel turn was never really pulled off well
enough for me to consider him in that category. In my eyes he's a tweener
at best.

DON BECKER: You know, it figures that David Flair would pick up a gimmick
that works for him *after* the voting period. But until he became the
fisherman from I Know What You Did Last Summer, he just seemed absolutely
clueless about what to do in the ring. Chyna got big babyface pops as a
heel, and that's pretty much a good sign that you should not be a heel.
Same goes for Sting - if your heel turn gets you tons of face heat,
something just isn't working.

MAX CHITTISTER: Sable and Berlyn never did anything in the ring to make me
hate them (I hate them for another set of reasons entirely). And I just
laugh at Mideon.

JBELL55146: Whoever planned the whole Sting turning heel angle should be
shot! Wow, Sting being misused by WCW. What a shocker!

CAN00K: Die Hogan die. Bad-ass HHH didn't do anything for me, I always
liked DX HHH better.

PAUL SHOCK: In what could be the first unanimous vote in RSPW history,
Sting gets the worst heel award. UT's heel interviews were much crappier
than his face interviews, as in his face interviews didn't involve
motorcycles. You can't have a "worst" category with Roddy Piper.

BLOB: Rhetorical Question: Can anyone get less crowd reactions that Steve
Blackman, Mideon, Viscera?

ALDO: When Rick Steiner says, "I am the DFG..." does he mean Dog Faced
Gremlin or Dumb Fucking Goon? DDP's heel schtick is so unfunny that
it's... well, not funny. As for Berlyn, he gets a reaction -- people
changing the channel to USA.

GEORGE CARTER: Triple H, Jeff Jarrett and Sting are the worst heels this
year. You could barely tell that Sting was a heel by the crowd reaction.
Jarrett needs puppies and to beat up women to get heat. And Triple H needs
to gang rape Stephanie McMahon to do so.

JOHN C.:Maybe if Sting knew he was supposed to act like a heel he would've
been better at it. He didn't change his ring attire, he barely used heel
tactics and he hit Hogan with a bat seemingly every week. Why would I boo
someone who does that?

JON RICHARDSON: Attempting to get Curt Hennig over as a heel by having him
hate rap music was one of the worst ideas that WCW ever had. Do they
really know their fanbase that badly?

RICHARD BEAUBIEN: Sting was one of the worst heels I've ever seen, simply
because he tried to be a babyface while doing it. It was as if Sting
didn't want to be evil, even though if done right it could of been super
hot. Of course it wasn't done right... The Cat is always a good choice
for bad heel, as his mic work sucks and his heat is always bad heat. The
fans hate him, not his actions. Rick Stiener is a bad wrestler and a bad
heel as he just can't channel his brothers skills. Scott, while a bad
wrestler, could at least cut a solid promo. Rick can't, and he just stinks
on the mic and can draw little heel heat.

JAN-MORTIZ KAEDING: Sting turns on Hogan and I'm supposed to boo him?
Mr.Ass and Untertaker didn't generate any real heel heat.

ELLIOT SPARKS: Billy Gunn and Brian Knobbs were, per se, the two worst
heels of 1999. They weren't so much ineffective as bad guys as simply
ineffective, hence they get my top two votes. Sting gets third, but
through no fault of his own; he could have been an excellent heel if
management had actually put a little thought into the turn, and maybe
tried their hand at fundamentally sensible booking. But because the
bookers have been going shit for whiskers to ensure he's booked either as
an ambiguous tweener or a simple bystander, the whole heel turn has been
one big mistake. The poor guy was never given a chance.

JOE GENTILE: Mideon. No one cares. Sable takes second. No matter what
"heelish" acts she did, she got cheers as long as her boobs were there.
Brian Knobbs, your career is over. Deal with it!!!!

C. BENSINGER: Steve Blackman -- Charisma of a turnip

MYKLL42:Chris Jericho and Sting both deserve my number one vote. Sting is
a career face, and Jericho was just not booked right. He was a great heel
in WCW, he could be a great heel in the WWF. But he gets more cheers than
boos.

SEAN FLYNN: They tried to reform the now, people didn't care. They tried
to make Alex Wright interesting, people didn't care. They tried to give
Simon a job, people cried.

B. SZPAKOWICZ: Steve Blackman, Berlyn and David Flair, cause the crowd
doesn't care about any of them. Well, okay, they hate Flair, but that's
Bischoff-type heat, not proper heel heat.

THERION: WCW wins hands down as the promotion that does the worst at
trying to put over natural heels to be babyfaces and natural faces as
heels. Sable's attempt at being heel before she was booted failed pretty
miserably, too, but I don't think that was the WWF's fault.

BERT SNOOVEN: I'm so amazed that WCW believed Hogan was such a face that
if Sting attacked His Orangeness, he'd be a heel. Not only did it make for
a poorly executed heel turn, but it made Sting more popular. Second place:
Mr. Ass. Hard to tell what he is, since the crowd doesn't react to Billy
under any circumstances. Hmm...he's called Mr. Ass, so maybe he should do
the Dana Carvey routine from "Saturday Night Live" where he played George
Michael. If he repeatedly said, "Look at my butt" in a British accent,
maybe he could get a sympathy laugh.

SUGAR RAY: Sting trying to be a heel! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! And some
people actually thought it could work! Ha ha ha ha ha ha! What a failure,
except of course in Canada, where he managed to be massively over as a
heel. As for the Rock, sorry people, but the Rock can't even be a heel
anymore. The people just won't stop to sing along!

JEREMY SORIA: Hogan takes the token first place spot. Berlyn gets second
place, in that he shed his dance-baby-dance persona for a persona that was
much more suited for Brakus two years ago.

HEATM: The only person who thought that Sting was a heel was Tony
Schiavone.

MDB: David Flair, you're adopted. Apparently, so is the Big Giant. Rick
Steiner, you look all real tough and mean with that leather jacket and
that bandanna. Yeah, right.
